A statistical method of best fitting several line segments has been successfully applied to shallow refraction data. Adjacent regression line segments either may be joined at a distance which is between two data points or may be constrained to join at a distance corresponding to one data point which is shared by two regression lines. The calculation of wave slowness, time intercept, and residual sum of squares for each line segment may be found for either join point case. Several tests have been found which eliminate the calculation of many combinations of data in the second join point case. The over‐all residual sum of squares is found by adding the local residual sum of squares for each connected line segment, and the best fit is the combination of line segments which has the best total residual sum of squares. An algorithm has been found which reduces the number of possible combinations of data for three or more line segments to a manageable number by successively searching for one join point on sections of the data, rather than calculating regression fits for all possible combinations of the data.

The form of Hamilton’s angular characteristic function for the aberrationless imagery of one surface of rotation on another, and the connexions between the coefficients of the surface and functional equations, are found. When several optical systems of the type considered are arranged in succession the relations between the coefficients of the individual characteristic functions and those of the combination are obtained. These connexions enable all aberrations to be computed without resorting to ray tracing.

Three experiments used rats and a non-shock passive avoidance task to differentiate between learning and non-specific arousal hypotheses of the interanimal transfer phenomenon. In the first experiment with 57 rats, a multi-trial training procedure was used and positive transfer was obtained from rats receiving “trained-brain” extract injections but not from rats receiving injections of extracts from aroused controls. The second experiment used a one-trial training procedure with 49 rats and reproduced the results of Exp. 1. The third experiment with 56 rats showed some evidence of extinction and spontaneous recovery while this was not found with rats receiving injections from aroused controls. A fourth experiment indicated that the brain-extract solutions of Exps. 1 to 3 contained relatively high concentrations of protein. No detectable concentrations of RNA were discerned. The behavioral results were consistent with the notion that the interanimal transfer resulted from a learning transfer rather than a nonspecific arousal transfer.

(1) Cerebral biopsies were performed on 59 patients with presenile dementia. The histological diagnoses were: not specific in 17 cases; consistent with Alzheimer's disease in 34 cases; combined Alzheimer's and Pick's diseases in one case (with necropsy confirmation); possible Pick's disease in 2 cases; arteriopathic cerebral atrophy in 2 cases; subacute spongiform encephalopathy in one case; and chronic meningoencephalitis in 2 cases. (2) Difficulties in diagnosing Pick's disease by cortical biopsy have been encountered and are described. (3) Further clarification of the changes demonstrated will only be possible if biopsy studies continue, because essential techniques such as electron-microscopy or enzyme histochemistry require fresh tissues. This is particularly so in the case of Alzheimer's disease.

It has occurred to me that it might be useful, as a guide to future inquiries, if I were to communicate, in reference to Mr, Roberts’s paper “On the Liquation, Fusibility, and Density of certain Alloys of Silver and Copper,” the results of some experiments made by me many years ago, the conclusion to which I was led being that the separation of the constituent parts of an alloy containing 91⅔ per cent. of silver was not so much due to the rapidity or slowness with which the heat of the fluid metal was abstracted, as to the inequality affecting its removal from the different parts of the melted mass in the act of consolidation. Thus, if a crucible full of the melted alloy were lifted out of the furnace and placed on the floor to cool, the surface of the melted metal within it being well covered with a thick layer of hot ashes, the lower parts of the mass, after it had become solid, would be found to contain less silver in proportion than the upper surface. If, on the other hand, the crucible were left to cool while imbedded in the furnace, the upper surface only being exposed to the air, except a thin layer to protect it from oxidation, then the lower parts would, after solidification, be found finer than the upper surface.

When the poisonous fangs of serpents are attentively examined, a slit or suture may be observed extending along the convex side, from the foramen at the base to the aperture near the point. This is a conse­quence of an unusual, and hitherto, I believe, entirely unno­ticed structure, resulting from the mode of formation of the tube through which the poison flows. My attention was called to this structure, by having lately received from my friend Mr. Herbert Ryder, the assay master to the mint at Madras, the bones of the skull of a cobra de capello. I had some years since noticed the slit running along the convex side of the fang, in making a preparation of the head of the common viper of this country, in which it is distinctly seen when magnified; nevertheless, it seems to have been overlooked by all the numerous authors who have written upon the subject of the venomous fangs of the viper, and who, as far as structure is concerned, do not appear to have advanced beyond Pliny, to whom, and even anterior to whose time, the circumstance of their being tubular was well known.

T HE degree to which a university may serve as an agent for overcoming sectional and national prejudices is measured, to a large extent, by the geographical distribution of its graduates in the years following their graduation. If this distribution is wide, the liberalizing influence of the university may be correspondingly great. The commingling of students in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of a large university and their redistribution to their own and to other states and nations may do much toward ending narrow provincialism and overcoming intersectional or international misunderstanding. It is thus seen that facts concerning the distribution of the graduates of a great state university are of considerable interest to students of sociological and political problems. Such facts are also closely related to problems of the construction of college curriculums and to problems concerning sources of public support for higher education. The curricular questions involved have to do with the relative emphasis to be placed on the training demanded by local or sectional industries as compared with the more liberal training designed to qualify students for the more varying environment of a wide geographical distribution. The problem of financial support involved is that of Federal support versus state support for higher institutions of learning, particularly for the landgrant colleges. Such problems as these are to be considered in the light of the geographical distribution of university graduates five, ten, fifteen, or twenty years after their graduation, as well as the distribution of their homes while attending the university. The brief study here reported was undertaken with the purpose of furnishing some data concerning the distribution of the homes of the Seniors of the Urbana colleges of the University of Illinois in the class of I923, and the addresses of the members of that class in I933, ten years after graduation. The data for the home addresses in I923 were taken from the student directory for that year. Only I,362 of the I,628 who finally graduated in that year were included in the study since transfer students were not classified. SummaryIn vitro culture of bone marrow obtained relatively late in the course of disease in both man and monkeys has resulted in isolation of VEE virus not detected by conventional procedures. Viable marrow cells served as both the source of virus and as susceptible tissue supporting virus multiplication. The first description of thrombotic microangiopathy (T.M.) is attributed to Moschcowitz (1924). The condition was reviewed by Symmers (1952, 1956a), who mentioned that the clinical diagnosis is usually suggested by the following tetrad: fever, haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenic purpura, and neurological disturb ances which are often of bizarre and fluctuating type. The dominant pathological feature is widespread occlusion of small blood-vessels with eosinophilic thrombi.
