Soil samples were collected from 107 locations following the commercial application of α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine (trifluralin) for 1, 2, 3, or 4 consecutive years. Analyses of soil samples indicated that trifluralin does not accumulate with repeated annual application and that a steady and continuous decline in the level of trifluralin present in the soil occurred with time.

Es wird von einem 11 Monate alten Kind berichtet, bei welchem eine Erkrankung der Harnwege mit Zwergwuchs, Rachitis, Aminoacidurie und Kristallablagerungen in Knochenmark und Conjunctiva nachgewiesen wurde. Erblichkeit, Blutsverwandtschaft der Eltern zeigen die Wirkung des “Cystin-Gen” in der Familie des Kindes, in welcher eine “Cystin-Diathese” bereits zu unerkannten Storungen fuhrte, bevor sich bei der Patientin nach dem Auftreten einer entzundlichen Erkrankung der Harnwege in fruher Kindheit die voll ausgebildete Cystinkrankheit manifistierte. Im Urin wurden Aminosauren vermehrt ausgeschieden, ferner “gebundenes Cystin”, freies Cystin jedoch nicht. Im Blut hingegen war “gebundenes Cystin” zweifelsfrei auf das Doppelte vermehrt, wahrend eine Vermehrung von freiem Cystin nicht nachweisbar war. Von den freien Aminosauren wurden diejenigen im Serum vermehrt angetrffen, die auch im Urin vermehrt ausgeschieden wurden. Mithin wurde unser Fall nach Fanconis hypothetischer Einteilung die metabolische Form der Aminoacidurie reprasentieren. Daruber hinaus fordert er zu der Deutung auf, das uberhaupt die metabolische Komponente bei der Entstehung der Krankheit vor der renalen rangiert, womit wir den Anschauungen von Bickel, Freudenberg, Linneweh und Ullrich beipflichten. Die abnorme Anhaufung von Cystin in den Geweben und im Blut steht im Vordergrund. In den Geweben wurde auser Cystin noch ein anderer, kristallographisch unterscheidbarer Stoff nachgewiesen.

Bei einer groseren Zahl von Parallelversuchen unter jeweils gleichen Bedingungen war die Lage des Isoniazids relativ zu den Serumfraktionen nicht reproduzierbar.

he primary objective of any introductory course in physiology for students in paramedical fields is to provide an understanding of normal body function so as to serve as a foundation for understanding the abnormal. Our course in physiology is offered by the junior college chiefly to nursing students, x-ray and medical records students, and to others in paramedical fields who must complete their basic education in two years. The laboratory experience in such a course is expected to demonstrate certain physiological principles in a practical manner. We have found that the classic laboratory experiment is an isolated learning experience which totally ignores the integrative aspects of body function. (Certainly no wild enthusiasm is generated by observing the rise of fluid in an osmometer.) Thus, we wanted to provide a stimulating experience for the student that would demonstrate the organization and interrelatedness of body function in the living animal. The solution was to let the student discover some of these things for herself by introducing her to the methods used in scientific research and independent study. Perhaps, too, some of this experience in observing and relating would be especially helpful to our nursing students when they go into the clinical area and attempt to apply physiological principles to the physical care of their patients. Our physiology course has three one-hour lectures and one three-hour laboratory period each week. Because of the general weakness in the chemistry background of most students, the first few lecture hours and laboratory periods are devoted to a review of the basic principles of chemistry. Then, although we maintain the usual systemic approach to physiology in the lectures, we deviate in our approach to the laboratory. Our laboratory study consists of working with live rats. The students work in teams of three or four individuals on projects selected by the members of each group from a list of possible projects. A portion of one laboratory period is devoted to a discussion and explanation of the scientific method. Early in the course each student is given a rat and is instructed in the proper care and handling of laboratory animals. The students are given some time to become familiar with their animals. The projects used in this course cover a range of indepth physiological studies including diet and vitamin excesses and deficiencies, endocrine function, drug and anesthetic effects, immunological reactions, radioactive isotope and x-ray projects, gastrointestinal studies, and simple neurological studies. The students may go beyond this list, and many have shown considerable originality in designing projects based on special interests. These projects can be completed using available equipment and allotted time. We have designed a simple but adequate operating area. Surgery is carried out here under humane and sterile conditions, utilizing some of the equipment and procedures that are used in hospital operating rooms. After selecting an area of study, the groups must do research in the available literature on the topic to gain an understanding of the physiological principles involved and to help narrow down the scientific area for investigation. One of the more serious problems associated with hypersonic wind tunnels of the blow-down variety is the obtaining of reliable pressure and temperature measurements. This report reviews the various types of instrumentation investigated for possible use in the ARL twenty inch hypersonic wind tunnel and illustrates the advantages and disadvantages of such instrumentation. Various types of flow visualization techniques are also discussed with emphasis on their applicability to possible use in the aforementioned tunnel. A description is also included of the high speed data acquisition system.
