This section presents a study which dealt with the relationship between an individual's adjustment as measured the Bell Adjustment Inventory, and his ability to predict the responses of another to the same inventory. The technique is known as cross-test administration or reverse testing. As a method, 34 students, husbands and wives, in a family psychology class were asked to respond to the Bell Adjustment Inventory in the following ways: responding the way they feel, or their Self-Adjustment; and predicting the way their husband (wife) would respond to the same questions. The reliability of the Predictive responses was .61 indicating the subjects responded with consistency. The correlation between the Total Adjustment Scores and the Predictive or Understanding Scores was .30. The correlation between the Emotional Adjustment Scores and the Predictive Scores was .51, the latter being significant at the .01 per cent level. An implication for education in human relations was drawn. If one's goals are greater understanding of others in interpersonal relations, a point of departure is the fostering of self understanding in the classes. It may follow that understanding of others is a by-product of understanding of self.
