This manual describes a variety of approaches a college or university can take to support student volunteers. It summarizes 6 models of volunteer programs currently in use on campuses and describes in detail a seventh "comprehensive" model that allows the school to assist and give general direction but permits students freedom to run their own programs. Financial, administrative, and many practical aspects are covered. Suggestions for both small and large scale service programs are made. The appendices contain a "mini-manual" for students to use in developing volunteer programs and sample records and forms used in existing programs. (JS)

Summary The relationship between a measure of interpersonal stress and report of physical symptoms was investigated. The data were obtained on 85 undergraduate students using a structured diary for a period of one week. A positive relationship was found between the diary measure of interpersonal stress and an overall tendency to report physical complaints. Positive relationships were also found between the measure of interpersonal stress and report of specific symptoms, such as dizziness and back problems. Interpersonal stress appeared higher on symptom days than non-symptom days but little evidence was found for higher stress on days immediately preceding symptoms.

The year of 1786 was one of famine and disease in New Spain. The effects of the unseasonable frost which had destroyed the corn crop in August of the previous year were felt especially in Mexico City. Hungry peasants and Indians flocked to the capital where they encountered masses of unemployed artisans. Prices of basic commodities soared; epidemic disease plagued the population, particularly among the poor; and crime increased. Social unrest and desperation rose to a peak, causing government and church authorities to enact a series of emergency measures designed to aid the indigent and punish grain speculators.

In an attempt to achieve conditioning of the pupillary reflex under conditions designed to limit the effects of the orienting response, data were obtained for 14 Ss who observed a series of lights of four colors. Each color light was presented 30 times for 7.5 sec. in random order. A mild electric shock was paired with one of the colors during the middle third of the experiment. Comparisons of pupil diameters during various stages of the study show a significant level of conditioning.

Summary This study investigated how well three personality measures, The Dream Incident Technique, the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule, and the Repression-Sensitization Scale, could predict pupillary dilation to a set of experimental stimuli. The stimuli were brief video sequences portraying themes of sex, aggression, achievement, affiliation, nurturance, dominance, and order. The Dream Incident Technique was most predictive of pupillary dilation to these scenes. The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule correlated only with self reports of stimulation. The R-S Scale was unrelated to either pupillary dilation or self report of stimulation.

Dream reports were obtained from two groups of female college students. Data from the first group were obtained during a period in which life in the community was more or less normal. Dreams from the second group were reported during and after a period of extensive community violence. Dreams for both groups were analyzed for the presence of aggressive content. Findings indicated that there was less aggression in the dreams of the second group.

The study was concerned with social and emotional correlates of marijuana use. 85 undergraduate students were given a structured diary to fill out nightly for 1 wk. 24 Ss reporting use of marijuana during this period were compared in terms of (1) the days they used and did not use the drug and (2) with the group of 61 nonusers. While most comparisons showed only a small difference, there was a tendency for marijuana users to more frequently report sex desire on use days than nonuse days and to smoke cigarettes more often than the nonuse group.

The paper reports a failure to confirm previous studies finding a relationship between the A, R, and Es scales of the MMPI and dream recall. The study was carried out on two groups of college students ( ns = 48, 55) and required Ss to produce written dream reports. The first group was given 6 wk. to report 2 dreams, the second 9 wk. to report 3 dreams. Ss who were able to report these dreams were compared with those who were not on the three MMPI scales. The results were nonsignificant.
