The article presents the author's arguments in defence of his viewpoint regarding worth-while activities, as expressed in his book "Ethics and Education." He says that he has never been altogether happy with the arguments advanced towards the end of the chapter on worth-while activities in the book. So, the critic's attempt to put a finger on the points where they go wrong is appreciable. Unfortunately, however, at the crucial points the critic has neither got his arguments quite right nor understood his position. The arguments may well be mistaken; but because of this failure to understand them properly the critic has not shown them to be mistaken. He admits that the exposition of his argument is painstakingly clear and fair until the critic reaches the point where he introduces transcendental arguments. Here the critic rather misunderstands the form of these arguments which are derivatives of Kantian-type deductions. They start from the fact that a type of public discourse has been differentiated out in which what ought to be done, or what there are reasons for doing, is seriously discussed. They try to show that certain principles are presupposed if this form of discourse is to have either meaning, or applicability to the world, or point.
