The results of line-of-sight over-sea propagation measurements over 37.2- and 35.5-km paths near Tokyo, Japan, are presented. Measurements of the fading (0.25, 3.99, 4.15, 6.72, and 18.0 GHz) of the cross polarization distortion (linear polarized wave at 4.15 GHz and circular polarized wave at 6.72 GHz) of the space diversity effect at 4.15 GHz, of the height-gain patterns at 6.72 GHz, and of the frequency-sweep patterns from 18 GHz to 22 GHz are included. The following statistical results are presented: the frequency, seasonal, and path dependence of fading; the effect of different fading occurrence mechanisms, such as K-type, duct-type, and distorted raindrops, for the cross polarization distortion; the diversity improvement factor; the effective reflection coefficient of sea surface; and the path-length difference between direct and sea reflected waves.

Heat capacities of TbAl 2 and HoAl 2 for the range 5 to 300 K are presented. The magnetic contribution, ( C p )mag, for TbAl 2 is very broad, resembling that for GdA1 2 . ( C p )mag for HoAl 2 is generally similar but, in addition, peaks in C p are observed at 20 and 28 K. The measured magnetic entropies for the two compounds are only about 80% of R ln (2 J + 1). The possibility cannot be excluded that the ground state is doubly degenerate in these cases. The data are t reated to give values of the Third Law Entropy ( S ), H – Ho and F-Ho.

Single crystals of zone-refined Cu were grown from the melt at growth rates ranging from 0.1 to 29.0 mm/min and with cooling rates of the crystal after growth varying from 0.24 to 45 °C/min. It was found that the growth rate had a very important effect on the generation of dislocations and their arrays, but the cooling rate of the crystal after growth had an important effect only when the crystal had been solidified at a rate of 0.1 mm/min.

1. In this study, the authors observed the phy-siological changes in onion bulbs when stored under different gaseous conditions and different humidities for 4 months after the sprouting period. The experiments were carried on from 1952 to 19 54 at room temperature in the laboratory of the University of Osaka Pref. 2. The storage conditions were as follows; (a) Onion bulbs were enclosed simply in desiccators: In this case, both percentage of CO2 and humidity in the vessel were rapidly increased, a rapid decrease of O2 concentration also being found at the same time. (b) Enclosed with CaCl2 in desiccators: CO2 accumulation in the vessel was somewhat less than (a) and the relative humidity was measured as low as 40_??_50%. (c) Enclosed with soda-lime in desiccators: CO2 given off by respiration was completely absorbed in soda-lime, the relative humidity being as low as (b) and O2 concentration finally decreased to 0.9% after the storage for 4 months. 3. It was found that onions stored under the, condition (a) brought about the functional disorder, a half of samples showing internal break down at 50 days after they were enclosed, and all bulbs disintegrated after 4 months. Under the condition (b), the percentage of disintegrated bulb was less than (a). It seems that the dry condition caused the inhibition of metabolic activities of onion bulbs to some extent. 4. Under the condition (c), a few onions sprout-ed at early period, but most onions were kept in good condition for 4 months storage period (Oct._??_Feb.). There was a very little decrease of total sugar and ascorbic acid content in bulbs during the storage, showing that the metabolism of onion bulbs was extremly suppressed under such environment. When onions were removed from the condition (c) to normal air at early period, sprouting com-menced in a short time, but the sprouting ability was not kept after the storage for 4 months. After the storage period exceeded 4 months, it was also found that even under the condition (c), the functional disorder like (a) and (b) occurred. Further, all onions which kept at 20°C throughout the storage period showed the functional disorder at 4 months after they were enclosed, notwith-standing O2 concentration remaining 3.7_??_4.2%. 5. Judging from the result given above, it seems that such environmental condition as 40_??_50% relative humidity and about 1% O2 concentration result in prolonging the storage period of onion as long as 4 months over ordinary storage period, at natural temperature condition prevailing in temperate zone.

1) In guinea pig, the lip was irritated with repeated injection of croton oil for various length, of time, and the changes produced in the lip, superior cervical and caeliac sympathetic ganglia, and various organs were investigated histopathologically, 2) In the first group of animals to which croton oil was injected for a short period of time, . only edema of the lip was observed, whereas in the second group to which injection was repeated for longer period, necrosis and/or cicatrix formation were remarkable.3) The sympathetic ganglia showed little change in the animals of the first group, while in the, second group they showed degenerative changes mainly consisting of atrophy and swelling of the cells, . vacuolization or destruction of the cytoplasma, chromatolysis, swelling, atrophy, deformation and dest-ruction of nuclei. The longer the lip was exposed to the irritation the higher was the degree of the changes. Changes in the superior cervical and caeliac sympathetic ganglia were similar to each. other.4) In various organs changes due to circulatory disturbance such as congestion and hemorrhage as-well as various degenerative changes were observed. These changes were more pronounced in group I..5) On the basis of these findings, the author explained the shock symptoms produced by irri-tation of the lip as a manifestation of Reilly's phenomena, and offered a postulation that the irritation to the lip was transmitted to the autonomic nervous system of the entire body through the superior cervical ganglion working as one of the mediators of the stimulus transmission.6) Further more, the cause of novocain shock was discussed clinically from the viewpoint of Reilly's theory.

On 150 ossicles which have been removed by radical mastoid operation and on 51 temporal bones suffered from otitis media, observation was made. By the otoscopic examinatien those were classified into a group of central perforation and another group of attic perforation. Malleus : A) In the group of central perforation, defect of the ossicles was not observed in the most of the cases whose hearing loss was below 60db, but defect of the head and manubrium of the malleus was observed in several cases. B) In the group of attic perforation, defect of the ossicles was not observed in most cases whose hearing loss was below 40db, but the defect of the head was observed in several cases. Incus: A) In the group of central perforation defect of the long process of the incus was frequ- ently observed in the most of the cases whose hearing loss was around 60db. B) In the group of attic perforation, defect of the ossicles was not observed in the most of the cases whose hearing loss was below 40db, but defect of the body of the incus was observed in the cases whose hearing loss was more than 40db.

Band structure of metallic Be is calculated at various values of the lattice constants with proper emphasis on the deviation from the free electron model. It is found that Be keeps to be a metal up to the lattice constant by 1.6 times as large as the normal lattice. The density-of-states at the normal lattice has a deep valley at the Fermi energy. The charge distribution of conduction electrons in the real space is more concentrated along a line connecting the atoms in the direction of the c -axis. There seems to be a kind of the energy separation between a bonding and an anti-bonding orbitals due to a strong hybridyzation of s and p wave functions. The calculated value of the coefficient of the electronic specific heat is 0.145 mJ/mole·deg 2 , while the observed value is 0.171 mJ/mole·deg 2 , so that the enhancement factor is determined as 0.18. The calculated dimensions and the shape of the Fermi surfaces agree well with experiment.

In our last research upon lathes we used steel balls as the presser. In the present studies, ball bearings were used instead of steel balls, and the characteristics of lathes were investigated when the friction between the work and the presser was small.

The composition of the polyphenolic extractives of unattacked, damaged and Sirex-affected sapwood, heartwood and knotwood of Pinus radiata D. Don differ considerably. The sapwood contained vanillin, vanillic, protocatechuic, 4-hydroxybenzoic, salicylic and ferulic acids, hydroquinone, traces of pinosylvin monomethyl ether and unidentified compounds. The amounts of pinobanksin, pinocembrin, pinosylvin and its monomethyl ether are much greater in the knotwood than in the heartwood. Whereas only very small amounts of pinosylvin were found in heartwood, the amount in knotwood was larger than that of its ether. No flavonoids were found in Sirex-affected wood but the amount of pinosylvin was much larger than its ether. Damaged sapwood contained pinosylvin monomethyl ether and pinocembrin. A compound with the properties of a flavanolol C-glycoside was isolated from the heartwood and knotwood. It is concluded that wood extractives are formed in situ and that the conditions initiating their formation influence their composition. The restriction of the spread of the symbiotic fungus of Sirex in trees which resisted attack, appears to be due to the formation of stilbenes in the sapwood after infection.

埼玉県, 東京都および宮城県下の各一農村において便所の位置および構造について調査を行った。その結果1) 三調査地区とも母屋に対する位置からみて外便所の付設が多い。2) 内便所ではおとしだめ1ケの型が多い。外便所ではおとしだめと貯溜槽の付設している型が埼玉に多いが, 東京と宮城では外便所にもおとしだめ1ケの型が多い代りに野溜を保有している場合が多い。3) 各調査地の便所とも, その貯溜能力な非常に少であることを認めた。が, 貯溜能の有無が寄生虫卵の感染に, 一因とはなり得るかも知れないが, 決定的なものでないことを示した。4) 以上の調査に基ずき, 便所の移り変わり, および今後の農村の便所の改良方法についての私見を記した。

This paper is about the applications of an epoxy-impregnated paper insulation to ultra-high-voltage systems. An epoxy-impregnated paper insulation is a resin-rich void-free structure, and therefore has extremely superior voltage withstand characteristics. It also has outstanding resistances to thermal cycle and mechanical vibration. Consequently, such insulation systems can be applied easily to condenser bushings. From the standpoint of the production facilities, techniques, and economical considerations, in items with an overall length of more than 3 m, "prefab"-type condenser bushings, consisting of several condenser cores, are desirable. In cases when two-unit condenser cores are assembled leaving a simple conical-shaped gap between them, it is extremely effective to adopt a "potential-expanding"-type gap designed so that the equipotential surface in the gap will be in the vertical position to the cone surfaces as far as possible. The prefab-type condenser bushing of the 500-kV class was experimentally manufactured using this arrangement; it displayed all the desired properties. This paper also describes the other examples of applications of epoxy impregnated paper insulation: CT bushings and pulse transformers in the magnetic firing system for high-voltage dcconverters using thyristors, and draw-out-type condenser bushing for disconnecting devices used in the compact-type substation.

From the motion of the work, the dynamical characteristics of lathes were studied, using 4-jaw chucks. The effect of the side rakes and the form of tips of cutting were also considered.

The effect of MH on the respiration of onion bulbs and potato tubers was studied at the end of 5months after harvest. The leaves of onion (Yellow Danvers Flat) were sprayed with 0.25% solu-tion of MH 2 weeks before the harvest, and the potato plants (Irish Cobbler) were similary treated with 0. 1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5% solution of MH 3weeks before the harvest. The experimental results are summarized as follows. 1. The onion bulbs; (a) The decrease in oxygen uptake in the disk part (bottom part)of the treated bulb was observed in comparision with the control, while the _??_ifference in leaf part (scaly leaf) was not signi-_??_cant in this respect. The same tendency was also _??_bserved in the experiment in vitro. (b) Respiratory quotient (R. Q.) in the disk _??_art of treated onions was less than the control, _??_ut in the leaf part the value was larger than he control. (c) The activity of dehydrogenase and catalase in the onion disk part treated with MH was less than the untreated onion. 2. The potato tubers; (a) The respiration of potato tubers was stimulated at all degrees of the concentration of MH throughout the experiment, especially it was remarkable by the application of 0.5%MH. (b) R. Q. value in the treated tubers was always less than the untreated one as it was found in the disk part of onion. (c) Dehydrogenase and catalase activities increased with treatment, not alike in the case of the onion bulb. 3. It seems appropriate to conclude that the growth inhibition and the physiological disorder of onion bulbs and potato tubers received MH treatment must have been induced by the disturbance of the respiratory mechanism and/or the alteration of metabolic pathway.

1) The present study was carried out to invest-gate the physiological influence of MH on onions on the last stage of bulb development. The spray of 0.15 percent solution of MH was made on May 22 and June 4, and the period of observation was from May 21 to June 17. 2) No significant differences were found in cont_??_nts of total sugar, reducing sugar, ascorbic acid and dry matter. 3) The activity of catalase and peroxidase was always lower in the treated onions than in the control, and similar tendency was found in the tetrazolium reaction. 4) The relation between the results mentioned and the internal breakdown of onions treated with MH was discussed to some extent.

In hydro-spark forming and explosive forming, it is necessary to transform effectively any generated energy into energy for the plastic working of a blank. This paper describes the mechanism of energy transmission involved in plastic deformation and the utilization of generated energies. A high-speed camera was frequently employed to observe conditions under water. The main points in this paper are as follows: 1. (1) In the free forming of a circular blank, the polar deflection varies with the stand-off distance and the distance between the water surface and the charge. A result of observation is that the behaviour of the gas bubble greatly influences the deflection of the blank. 2. (2) By adopting the forming method that uses an air-bag over a blank, the efficiency of energy utilization for deformation is improved remarkably. In this case, the primary shock wave has little effect on the deformation, and the kinetic energy of the water which is taken up from the gas bubble energy is responsible for the deformation. 3. (3) When both the pressure pulse and water hammer act together, the deformed shape of a blank becomes round. The character of the deforming process in this case is such as to establish a round profile at an early stage. 4. (4) The high pressure whose duration is of the order of a millisecond is created by the water hammer, which is generated by the water jet and a rapid gas expansion. 5. (5) Generally, the primary shock wave is not essential for deformation, but the pressure pulse as a shock wave can form a circular blank into a conical shape.

研究目的巻取作業による織布の伸び及びその分布状態並びに巻取固さに及ぼす巻取張力及び荷重の影響を3通りの巻取方法について実験的に比較検討する.研究結果巻取回転数の変化, 巻取層の厚み及び巻取固さ等から考えて消極巻取が一番良好のように考えられるが, 安定した巻取を行うにはローラ荷重と張力の間の調整が困難である.

Polarized Raman spectra for the 0–100 cm −1 region of oriented single crystals of 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene and 1,3,5-tribromobenzene are reported. An assignment is suggested for the librational and translational crystal vibrations. The spectra of the two crystals are very similar, and frequencies of the heavier 1,3,5-tribromobenzene are consistently lower than those for the other crystal.

Following up our primary studies on lathes, the dynamical characteristics of lathes which cut the work actually were studied from the motion of the work. In the present research the effect of the form of cutter tips was principally considered.

Continuing the previously published research on sliding bearings, the authors have studied the dynamical rigidity in the case of the combination of fwo taper roller bearings.

目的走っている綿糸による銅の円筒の摩耗率が円筒の半径を変化さしたとき,どのように変化するかを実験によってしらべ,摩耗の法則が成立するか否か,綿ワックスがどんな効果を与えるかを明らかにし,あわせて摩耗の機構を解明する.成果実験結果によれば,糸の張カー定の場合円筒半径が増加すると摩耗率は減少し,単位長さ当りの垂直圧力が一定の場合摩耗率は円筒半径にほとんど無関係である.これらの結果を相当垂直荷重で整理して比摩耗率の形に直すと,いずれの場合にも比摩耗率は一定とはならず,円筒半径の増大に対し逆に減少し,摩耗の法則が成立しない.それゆえ綿糸に含まれている天然潤滑剤による表面の状態の変化を考え,円筒半径の大きいことが糸と円筒との接触時間を長くし,接触時間が表面温度よりもワックスの軟化溶融に対しより著しく作用するため,円筒半径の大きいとき比摩耗率が小さくなると説明することができる. 目的 これまでの報告において論じたように,摩擦熱が綿繊維の表面に含まれているワックスの軟化溶融を促進し,その結果生ずる移動層が相手の物体の摩耗を防止する作用を営む.このように綿ワックスが円筒の摩耗現象において重大役割を演ずるから,もしワックスを有しない糸で実験すれば,事態はすっかり変ってしまうであろうと思われる.それゆえ本報では精練した糸とそうでない糸とによる実験結果を比較検討する. 成果 工業的に精練した糸と精練してない糸による摩耗率,摩擦係数にはほとんど差異がみとめられなかった.またいずれの場合にもこれまでと同様,試験片の入口側の方が出口側より激しく摩耗した.したがって精練の影響はあらわれていないことになる.従来からの研究によれば,ワックスを除去した糸は一般に高い摩擦係数を示し,これに少量の潤滑剤を添加すると,摩擦係数は急激に低下し,添加量がある程度以上になると,摩擦係数はそれ以上は低下しなくなる.この事実と考えあわすと,工業的精練ではかなりの量のワックスが残留しており(ソックスレ抽出試験によってみとめられる),この残留ワックスが,精練してない糸におけるワックスと同じ作用を営んだことになる.したがって潤滑剤の効果をしらべるに当たっては,工業的精練では不十分であり,完全にワックス分を除去できるような方法を取らねばならない.そのためにも,少量の糸で実験できるようなちがった型式の実験装置が必要となる.

研究目的整経機において, 摩擦棒と経糸との接触角を積極的に変化させることにより, 終始等張力で経糸を巻き取る方法を考案し, モデル実験と理論的考察を行った.研究結果本研究に用いた装置のごとき機構において等張力で経糸を巻き取るためには摩擦棒を取り付けた腕を一定速度で布との接触角を減少させる方向に回転させればよいことがわかった.
