Voltage fluctuations identified as receptor potentials can be detected with electrodes applied to the mucilage surrounding the head of a tentacle of Drosera intermedia if the head is stimulated by contact with a live insect, by the touch of a clean, inert object, or by application of salt solutions. Associated with a low receptor potential are action potentials, which occur at a frequency dependent on the magnitude of the receptor potential. These action potentials can be detected with electrodes applied to any region of the stalk of the tentacle. Inflection of the lower stalk follows the occurrence of action potentials. Inflection is minute for isolated action potentials but large and rapid when several occur within a brief interval. The apparent amplitude of action potentials recorded from the stalk is independent of receptor potential amplitude, but that of action potentials recorded from the mucilage commonly decreases as the receptor potential deviates from the baseline and increases as it returns. It is suggested that variation of apparent amplitude of the action potentials may result from postulated variation in the resistance of receptor membranes.

Previous fixed point indexes defined for a set-valued map in an infinite-dimensional space have required the values of this map to be convex sets. The corresponding assumption of this paper is that the values be (co-)acyclic sets, i.e., that the reduced Alexander cohomology group of each of these sets be trivial in each dimension. Other assumptions are that the space is locally convex and that the map is compact and upper semicontinuous with no fixed points on the boundary of its domain. The index is defined, proved to be homotopy invariant, and proved to vanish in case there are no fixed points. The main methods used are finite-dimensional approximation and the Vietoris-Begle mapping theorem.

Action potentials of Drosera tentacles resemble those of vertebrate peripheral nerves in that they appear to be comprised of relatively uniform spikes, variable shoulders or negative after-potentials, and variable positive after-potentials. The peaking of the spike corresponds to a period of great refractoriness, while action potentials of low amplitude may be fired readily during the negative after-potential. The action potentials fired during the negative after-potential appear to be unlike those of peripheral nerves in that they are of abnormally brief duration. Also apparently different from the case in peripheral nerves is the dependence of the duration of an action potential on the interval separating it from the preceding action potential.Action potentials propagate from the neck of the stalk to its base at about 5 mm s(-1) at room temperature. Propagation may be reversed artificially, consistent with the possibility that the neuroid cells are electrically coupled.

Extract The purpose of this communication is to describe an apparently little-known granulomatous condition affecting the skin and subcutaneous tissues of domestic cats. The disease was first encountered in 1958 in the course of a sporadic histological sampling of animal tumours submitted through the interest and enterprise of local veterinary surgeons. Since then, a total of nine cases has been collected, all of which were seen in routine veterinary practice in the Auckland urban area.

Several models used to study the effectiveness of abortion in population limitation are examined. The Keyfitz model, based on the probability that an individual woman will conceive in a given month, is extended and public implications of legal abortions are discussed. A model more appropriate for a population of women rather than a single woman can be developed by relating the probability of conception and the sterile intervals to the number of birth and the number of women in the population. The effectiveness of abortion as a birth control method is studied using this model and includes: 1) abortion effectiveness combined with efficient contraception (95% effective); 2) the sensitivity of abortion to gestation when a contraceptive of lower efficiency is used; 3) these effects modified for prolonged lactation; 4) the effect of changing the monthly probability of conception and the monthly efficiency of contraception. Abortion later in pregnancy is advantageous when efficient contraception is absent. The effectiveness of abortion to gestation is approximately the same whether lactation is included or absent, although abortion is more effective at all gestations and for all contraceptives efficiencies in the absence of lactation. The sensitivity of the effectiveness of abortion to the probability of conception decreases as monthly effectiveness of contraception increases. The probability of conception and the monthly effectiveness of contraception are difficult parameters to measure in the population. The effect of abortion averaged over the entire population at risk of pregnancy is different from its effect on certain subgroups. For U.S. females the probability of conception may be between .06 and .16, and from the model it is indicated that the effectiveness of abortion would be from 1 to 1.13 abortions per live birth. The application of the model suggests that the expenditures for abortion services in this population are a reasonable investment, although investment for efficient contraception is also suggested.

Canavanine is an arginine analogue found in the seeds of many common legumes and is known to inhibit protein synthesis and growth in a number of organisms. Yet canavanine may comprise as much as 4% of the seed dry weight of the jackbean (Canavalia ensiformis).Canavanine is accumulated during earlier development in the pod, but disappears upon ripening. A corresponding increase in seed canavanine of about the same magnitude as the loss in the pod takes place during this latter time, but there is a subsequent significant increase of canavanine content of the seed after all detectable canavanine has disappeared from the pod. The first of these changes suggests synthesis of canavanine in the pod and transport into the seeds while the second one indicates a synthesis of canavanine in the seeds themselves, or possibly in the leaf or pod with rapid translocation to the seed.Canavanine was found to be at its highest concentration in the seed coats and pods when they were growing most rapidly and to gradually decline afterwards; however, the canavanine concentration of the seeds was found to be constant throughout fruit development.The pattern of canavanine mobilization in jackbean fruits was quite similar to the known pattern of total nitrogen mobilization typical of other leguminous fruits. This is consistent with a role as a nitrogen transport and storage compound.

The extracellular space of tentacles of Drosera capensis L. is divided into two compartments by cuticular material between cells of an endodermoid layer and by the nonporous cuticle of the stalk and neck. The distal compartment includes the mucilaginous secretion as well as the free space of the secretory cap, since the cuticle covering the cap is perforated by numerous 0.05-0.3 μm pores. The proximal compartment includes xylem and the intercellular space of the stalk. The existence of the endodermoid partition is consistent with the observation that action potentials recorded extracellularly from the head may be positive-going while those recorded extracellularly from the stalk are negative-going. The partitioning is also consistent with the hypothesis previously proposed to explain why the amplitude of action potentials recorded from the mucilage varies as a function of the amplitude of the receptor potential.The living cells are united by plasmodesmata. Unusually abundant plasmodesmata were observed in the walls between endodermoid cells and neck cells, between neck cells and the next row of outer stalk cells, in the end walls connecting the outer stalk cells, and the end walls connecting the inner stalk cells: these strategically located plasmodesmata presumably permit the electrotonic spread of receptor potentials and action potentials between cells.
