This thesis is an attempt to reconstruct the state of society in Ceylon depicted by the Saddharma-ratnavaliya and other contemporary Sinhalese literature - that is, the society of roughly the thirteenth century A.D. Though piecemeal studies have been undertaken by different scholars at different times, hardly any attempts have been made to study, as a whole, the life and institutions of Ceylon. Thus our task is all the more difficult. Many points had to be left undecided owing to lack of evidence, and will have to remain so until further light is shed by future research. In making a study of this period one is made aware of the beginnings of the decline of Sinhalese culture. Whatever the field, whether art, architecture, or sculpture, little development can be seen. Perhaps Ceylon never recovered from the destruction and ruin caused by the alien foe during this period. The Saddharma-ratnavaliya, Pujavaliya, Vi?uddhi- marga-sannaya and Kav-silumina are the sources of our study. Other works of the preceding and succeeding periods have also been examined whenever it was necessary to find corroborative evidence. In this respect, the Maha-vamsa, Cula-vamsa, Saddharmalamkaraya and the inscriptions have proved of immense value and have been liberally quoted in support of our views. The material has been dealt with under different heads for convenience of treatment and the whole thesis is divided into three sections - Political, Religious and Social. It is needless to say that, though the material has been thus presented, in real life there was no such hard and fast compartmentalisation. All spheres of activity were vitally connected with each other and were deeply influenced by religious thought. We cannot speak of an ancient Sinhalese culture without realising how vitally Buddhistic it was. It is our hope that this thesis will prove some contribution to the understanding of the life and institutions of our ancient people.

Koṅku is the name of a distinctive geographic and social region in the west central corner of Madras State in India. The area encompasses much of the present Coimbatore District, plus parts of Salem, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli. It is roughly 8,500 square miles in extent and has a present population of about 5,000,000. Koṅku ia comprised of a single, broad upland plain. The area is dry and, in addition, rainfall varies greatly in quantity from year to year. The region is roughly bounded in each of the four directions by high hills, while the plain is cut into sections by three important tributaries of the Cauvery river. The peasant inhabitants can name these distinctive physical features. They further describe the area in terms of its sacred geography. Konku has seven sacred hills dedicated to Morukan and seven riverside temples built in the name of Civa. The region is further identified with a long epic or ballad which recounts the folk history of the area in some detail.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between patental social mobility and (a) subjects' status aspirations, (b) perceived parental status expectations. The subject population utilized consisted of 263 male students in the final year of junior high school. Two major hypotheses were tested by this investigation. Hypothesis I was that the level of subjects' status aspirations would be found to be a positive monotonic function of the extent of parental social mobility. Hypothesis II was that the level of perceived parental status expectations would be found to be a positive monotonic function of the extent of parental social mobility. [TRUNCATED]

"The purpose of this study is to analyze health, social conditions and educational environment which affect the educational development of the Mexican children in the Sonora Independent School and plan a remedial program. The source of the data in this study was the survey made by Winters, and a survey of health, social and educational conditions of the Mexicans living in Sonora. The study was limited to the Mexican families and the Mexican children in the Sonora school district."--leaf 1.

The problem of this research is to determine whether or not O. Henry pictured the existing social conditions of the period in his New York stories and whether his characters are representative of people who actually lived at that time.

There is an accepted principle amongst sociologists that all communities have some pattern of stratification. Since the Valley City Negroes, the minority group selected for this research. represent a community structure, some pattern of stratification is present. At the time of this study the specific nature of the class structure tor this community had not been identified. Statement of the problem. It was the purpose of this study (l) to delineate the social class structure of the Negro community of the Valley City metropolitan area in the year 1950~1951; (2) to show the relationships of membership in associations to class placement; (3) to show the relationship or membership in associations and of class placement to such factors as length of residence, education, occupation, and home ownership. Importance of the study. The Valley City metropolitan area had, in March, 1946, a total of 15 per cent or its total population classified as "other than white," of which one-third were Negro. The 1950 Census listed the number as 6,677 Negroes. In certain areas the ethnic groups of Negro and Mexican residents are in the majority. A more thorough knowledge of the class structure and concomitant information of the associations serving these Negro people will facilitate better integration of this minority group into the total community structure. This knowledge will be useful to various municipal agencies as well as to sociologists.

The purpose of this study is to report the results of an investigation of skidrow rooming houses in Stockton, and to consider these results in terms of the social functions of the community. It is hoped that the data collected in making this study and the resultant generalizations may be of some public value, should this community or other communities of the California Central Valley decide to look more searchingly into one of their conflict-breeding areas.

This is a study in nutritional geography. Three Javanese villages, a rice village, a corn village, and a cassava village were examined and are described in some detail with emphasis on elements of nutritional ecology. Within the village 54 farmers and their families were studied to determine first what was the degree of interrelationship between land, food, and work; and second what was the economic developmental significance of caloric undernutrition. The nutrient intakes and work outputs of economically productive male family members were carefully determined for 324 man days over the period of a year. It was found that there were no correlations of any significance among the land holdings, caloric intake, and work output data sets. As a result of this lack of interrelationship it was determined that a program of caloric supplementation should have a low priority as a stimulant for national development.
