The index is an outgrowth of one originally developed for internal use by the Underway Data Processing Group to indicate the status of digitized data. It is not a complete index of all oceanographic cruises ever carried out by the Institution. It contains a list of geophysical, geologic data regarding depth, magnetic and profiler records, data from deep sea drilling project, and other related data.

The prototype system for the production process for manufacturing single crystal spinel ribbon (1 in. wide by 0.020 in. thick) from the melt was built and now produces as scheduled. Analytical studies using an X-ray spectrometer provided data on variations of spinel composition with time at melt. Spinel seeds, both in ribbon and rod form, have been grown as properly oriented single crystal material. A large number of crystal growth runs were carried out during this program which served to establish the validity of our overall approach and showed that the only unexpected problem area was a discoloration of the grown ribbons. The significant problem areas which were addressed included discoloration of the ribbon attributed to molybdenum contamination, and the occurrence of large imperfections in the microstructure which was eventually shown to be traceable to the starting material. This report discusses the techniques used in and the results of an investigation of the mineral constituency of the dust component of the atmospheric aerosol over White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, conducted from November 1964 to August 1965. The eighty-one atmospheric dust samples, taken near the surface during this period, were analyzed by the light microscope technique of dispersion staining and by infrared absorption spectroscopy. Dispersion staining was used to determine the concentrations of quartz, kaolinite, illite, gypsum, and the carbonate family when the particle diameters were greater than four microns. Cases of exceptionally high concentrations of gypsum, quartz, and kaolinite, the month-by-month variation of the composite concentration, the seasonal variation of the gypsum concentration, and the lowest single-sample composite concentration are discussed in relation to the mineral content of area soils and meteorological conditions. Comments are made relative to the possible influence of extraterrestrial and sea-salt particles on the observed concentrations. By extending infrared absorption spectra to 40 microns wavelength, it has been possible to identify the minerals gypsum, mirabilite, quartz, kaolinite, illite, calcite, and dolomite in microgram samples of atmospheric dust, although any particular sample might reveal only a few of these constituents.

The report describes continued studies of the factors controlling the activity of Pt black catalysts for the anodic oxidation of hydrocarbons. Particular attention has been given to the separation of structural (mass transport) influences on activity and the differences in the intrinsic activity of the catalyst (i.e. the activity per real square centimeter of the surface). Significant progress was made in developing a technique for the measurement of intrinsic activity. This technique is based on the galvanostatic oxidation of a strongly adsorbed intermediate of the propane oxidation reaction (O-type). It was shown that at 90C, the rate of formation of CH -beta is slow enough to permit a study of O-type oxidation as a unique surface species. The shape of the galvanostatic trace is, also, very similar to that for reduced CO2. The attainment of uniform surface coverage, however, particularly on those areas of the surface deep in the pore structure is still questionable because of the limited rate of diffusion of propane. An assessment of this sensitivity was carried out by comparing the results of measurements made with C3H8 at 90C with measurements made with 'reduced CO2.' Also, thirteen platinum-on-carbon catalysts were prepared. The objectives were to prepare catalysts in which the crystallite size could be varied without simultaneously changing the agglomerate structure. This report describes continued studies of the factors influencing the activity of platinum black catalysts for the electrochemical oxidation of propane. Two factors are considered in detail--the physical structure of the black and its influence on the mass transport processes of the reaction, and the intrinsic activity per real square centimeter of the catalyst surface. The main objective of this work is to correlate the physical parameters of Pt-catalysts of very different characteristics with their activity for anodic propane oxidation. In particular, the effect of specific factors which affect the surface reaction is of interest. Basically, this work has three experimental aspects: (a) preparation of Pt-catalysts of different activity, (b) physical characterization, and (c) electrochemical activity determination., Report on proj. Krause and Menard recently reported on an analysis of North Pacific seafloor topography which was made by visually selecting and measuring parameters of individual hills along profiles 60 miles in length. One of the major objectives of this project has been the attempt to find similar parameters to describe the topography that can be obtained without scanning the echograms for specific features. Because this was a pilot project with time limitations, it was decided to treat the data as time series and to make use of the programs which had previously been developed at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, University of California. The data from the time series analysis are presented in this report and compared to other methods of representing sea-floor topography. Detection performance in the monaural detection with contralateral cue (MDCC) task was measured for sinusoidal signals over a range of signal-masker levels at several cue intensities and phases. In the first experiment, the effect of cue intensity was measured at two phases, one giving good performance and the other leading to poor performance. With good phase, cue intensity had little effect except that performance declined with a very loud or very soft cue. With bad phase, increasing the cue intensity made performance worse. Over a considerable range of cue intensity and signal-masker level, bad-phase performance was well below chance. In the second experiment, the effect of cue phase was determined at a single cue intensity. Performance was an asymmetrical function of cue phase. The slopes of the derived psychometric functions were also a function of phase, approximating the slope of an ideal detector for signal known exactly (SKE) when phase was good, and approximating that of the simple monaural detection psychometric function when the phase was bad. The data lend support to the idea that binaural interaction involves at least two indenpendent mechanisms. (Author), See also report dated 23 Sep 70, AD-730 878.
