A survey of the recent literature on the effectiveness of liver therapy in subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord associated with pernicious anemia reveals grossly contradictory opinions. Seyderhelm1 believes that this disorder of the nervous system is entirely uninfluenced by such therapy, and Cohen,2 McAlpine,3 Curschmann,4 Krause,5 Fahr,6 Carey,7 Davison,8 Sargant,9 Ahrens,10 Thaysen,11 and Morawitz,12 among others, believe that unfavorable progression of the disease may occur in spite of liver treatment. On the other hand, optimistic reports have been recorded by Minot and Murphy,13 Richardson,14 Fried,15 Ungley and Suzman,16 Suzman,17 Lottig,18 Starr,19 Strauss and Castle,20 Baker, Bordley and Longcope,21 Meulengracht22 and many other clinicians.Our purpose in this communication is threefold: 1. In connection with his work on experimental convulsions, Speransky,1 in 1926, reported a method of producing epileptiform fits in dogs by freezing portions of the cerebral cortex. We here report our observations when this work was repeated.His method, briefly, was as follows:A small area of the cortex, excluding the motor area, was frozen through the dura to a depth of from 2 to 4 mm. by means of carbon dioxide gas for about one minute. This procedure was invariably followed in from two to five hours by severe epileptiform convulsions which, in from twelve to fifty hours, resulted in death. Speransky did not state whether an anesthetic was used. He described the convulsions as consisting first of a tonic contraction of the flexors of the hind legs and occasionally clonic convulsions of single muscles or groups of muscles.
