This glossary provides Spanish translations for English technical terminology used in work connected with transformational generative grammar and theory. Approximately 300 terms are listed alphabetically in English with Spanish equivalents, Spanish explanations, and examples where necessary. (VM)

A significant measure of the gradual progress in relating social work education to the racial and ethnic communities in the United States is the development of ethnic content and materials to be incorporated into the curriculum of schools of social work. The process of incorporating ethnic curriculum content generates the process of further development and refinement of ethnic curriculum content. Thus, the development of social work curriculum in relation to social work practice in the barrio should be perceived as a process in which Chicano concerns and aspirations are institutionalized within the schools of social work. Chicano students and faculty and the Chicano community are the major sources for helping to develop such a curriculum. In attempting to show and clarify the opportunities for constructive change which are needed, 3 factors are discussed: (1) the present conditions of Chicano curriculum development, (2) the anticipated directions which future Chicano curriculum development will take, and (3) the methods and processes which are required to facilitate these anticipated directionalities. The problem of interference caused by linguistic transfer in second language learning does not increase with the number of languages that the student has acquired. The ability to learn a second, third, or fourth language depends on what Chomsky calls "the language acquisition device," which is a capacity or a sensitivity formed by a combination of linguistic universals (phonologic, syntactic, and semantic, or the interrelations between these components). This sensitivity to linguistic universals permits a child of up to 12 years of age to learn several languages easily and quickly, provided that language exposure is direct and with regularity. Adults lose this facility after they have internalized the grammar of their own language. To learn a new language, an adult must become aware of linguistic universals. As the adult becomes more conscious of linguistic universals in learning the new language, language learning becomes easier. The mental state appropriate to learning languages, that is, linguistic sensitivity, becomes more effective as the student learns other languages. (VM)

A concept of the masses, or populace, conveyed a positive connotation in both Biblical and Renaissance literature. During Spain's Golden Age (seventeenth century) writers, especially didactic dramatists, tended to register negative and prejudiced attitudes toward the common folk and to regard them as "masa inculta" or uncultured masses. Primarily, this attitude followed a literary tradition inherited from Latin writings and was a result of the influence of Vulgar Latin on Spanish. Such terms as "plebs", "turba", and "massa" were used to describe mobs, whereas literary Latin referred to these groups as "populus" and "gens," more positive terms. Other reasons for this air of superiority were that dramatists preferred to maintain a distance from their spectators, and playwrights claimed a deterioration in the quality of their audiences. Each author varied slightly in his interpretation of "vulgo", but almost all of them referred to the populace frequently in their works. Among the writers cited are Cervantes, Calderon, Lope de Vega, and Juan de la Cueva. Later writers such as Tirso de Molina, Ricardo de Turia, and Guillen de Castro reversed the tendency and respected and identified with the masses in their dramas. (DS)

The present study aims to bring to the reader an understanding of Venezuela's educational patterns, needs, and development within the framework of the country's economic and social situation. Much of this report is devoted to historical backgrounds --to cultural development, politics, immigration, economics, and international attitudes-- to give meaning to the facts of its educational situation. Attention is called to the numerous problems which face the educator and the government. Along every rung of the educational ladder, from the preschool on up through the university, challenges arise in all directions including the administrative, financial, curricular, and philosophical. In the final chapter, the author criticizes some phases of educational policy, educational philosophy, or the lack of carefully thought-out and balanced educational philosophy.
