Roses, such as the Hollywood variety, as well as many other red or pink flowers, take on a faint bluish cast under some storage conditions. Similarly flowers which have been held in storage at times do not last as long at ordinary room temperatures as do fresh flowers. Preliminary experiments indicate that these difficulties may be obviated by means readily available to those who are concerned with the production, storage, and marketing of cut flowers. In the first experiment freshly cut Hollywood rosebuds were stored at 35?-460 F. in a 70-liter metal container while in a refrigerated chamber. Water to a depth of 4 inch in the bottom of the container and a sheet of window glass over the top, in place of the metal lid, maintained a high humidity within the container. The rosebuds were divided into three groups previous to being placed in the container. In group i the lower portions of the stems were immersed in a flask containing a commercially available solution designed to maintain flowers in a fresh condition over a considerable length of time provided the flower stems remain in it. Two and onehalf times the amount of sugar recommended by the manufacturers was added to the solution. In group 2 the flower stems were kept dry, an empty flask being placed over their ends to keep the stems out of the water which covered the bottom of the container. In group 3 the lower portions of the stems were placed in the commercial solution (with the added sugar as noted) for an hour; they were then removed from the liquid and the bases of the stems covered with a dry empty flask as in group 2, and also placed in the container. All lots were illuminated, as soon as the groups were in place, with light from a i6o watt Mazda lamp set in a small reflecter and suspended 8 inches above the glass of the metal container in the cold room. The American of all classes was expected to be “good with his hands.” But we shouldn't forget that work subcultures have their own mystique, they aren't “natural,” and one becomes a participating member through a process of enculturation which may be as difficult as the process of becoming Americanized is difficult for some immigrants.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the mechanism of the antiarrhythmic effect of magnesium sulfate in digitalis toxicity. The egress of potassium from the myocardium after the administration of 1 mg of acetyl strophanthidin into the right atrium was determined in 16 dogs by measurement of the coronary sinus-femoral artery potassium concentration difference. Three infusions of acetyl strophanthidin were given at 2 1 2 hour intervals. Twenty-five percent magnesium sulfate was given simultaneously with the third infusion. Arterial and coronary sinus samples were collected at 2 minute intervals after each infusion. The mean maximal arteriovenous potassium concentration difference was 0.47 mEq/liter after the first dose of acetyl strophanthidin and 0.80 mEq/liter after the second dose. When magnesium sulfate was given with acetyl strophanthidin, the arteriovenous difference was not significantly different from that of control subjects (0.15 mEq/ liter). A high level of magnesium concentration may overcome the acetyl strophanthidin-induced inhibition of transport adenosine triphosphatase. This may explain the efficacy of magnesium sulfate in the treatment of the arrhythmias of digitalis toxicity associated with hypomagnesemia. Although magnesium sulfate blocked myocardial egress of potassium in all studies, arrhythmias still occurred in 60 percent of the animals. This suggests that factors independent of potassium loss from the myocardium underlie the development of some digitoxic arrhythmias.

In reviewing the history of the development of techniques of work evaluation, four different approaches are appraised: (1) the mental testing approach, (2) the job analysis approach, (3) the work-sample approach, and (4) the situational assessment approach. Each of these sets of methods is found to arise from somewhat different sectors of society, to serve differing interests, and to have differing objectives. After examination of the merits and limitations of each of the four approaches, the conclusion is drawn that “no one of these four methods can do everything; each deals with a restricted facet of a many-faceted problem.” Attention is called to the general need for validation through professional observation in unprotected industrial settings.

A field experiment was designed for study of the effects of soil type on movement of zinc in the soil and of soil type and levels and placements of zinc sulfate on growth of 1-year-old tung trees. The soils were Savannah and Red Bay fine sandy loams, Lakeland fine sand, and Arredondo loamy fine sand. The treatments consisted of the factorial combination of three levels of zinc sulfate with three placements and a check plot (no zinc sulfate). At the end of 1 year the rate of zinc movement through the four soils was in the order Lakeland > Red Bay > Savannah > Arredondo. Very little zinc was absorbed by the tung trees from surface applications on the Arredondo soil, but the trees obtained sufficient zinc when the zinc sulfate was mixed with the soil. In contrast, zinc mobility on the Lakeland soil was so great that 1 ounce applied on the surface proved toxic. Although there was little lateral movement of zinc in the soils, the movement was primarily toward the tree rather than away from it. 1. Rose buds may be maintained in the desired state of maturity during storage at low temperature by avoiding placing the stems in water or aqueous solution during such period. The desired state of maturity also may be maintained by storing the roses in an atmosphere containing added carbon dioxide, or carbon dioxide and a reduced amount of oxygen. 2. Rose buds have a strong tendency to open during storage. This is particularly true when stored with their stems in water or aqueous solutions. 3. Roses develop objectionable color characteristics under low temperature storage. These tendencies seem to increase when stored in an atmosphere containing large amounts of carbon dioxide, or carbon dioxide and a reduced amount of oxygen. 4. As a rule, roses which have been stored do not maintain satisfactory petal turgidity or petal color after removal from storage to room temperature with their stems in water. 5. A case of a small right coronary conal branch to pulmonary trunk shunt with surgical correction is reported. The patient, a 45-year-old housewife, had chest pain, labile hypertension, and intermittent left bundle-branch block with normal serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Selective coronary arteriography was necessary to demonstrate the abnormal communication between the conal branch of the right coronary artery and the pulmonary trunk. Symptoms disappeared after surgical correction of the shunt. Transient left bundle-branch block appeared during exercise after surgery, but the patient was improved subjectively and resumed all household chores without difficulty. Shunting of oxygenated blood away from the myocardium thereby decreasing coronary blood flow to a specific area may have been responsible for significant symptomatology.

During a 21/2-year period, studies were done on 14 patients with chronic renal failure to evaluate pleural effusions which we believe were secondary to the uremic process. The patients with uremic pleural effusions closely resembled those in the group with chronic renal failure as a whole with respect to diagnosis and clinical features. Fever and pericarditis were noted in half the patients. The pleural fluid appeared serosanguineous or hemorrhagic in 10 of 14 patients and contained a predominance of lymphocytes more often than of neutrophils. Elevated protein and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) levels gave the effusion characteristics of an exudate. Pleural tissue obtained by pleural biopsy or autopsy showed chronic fibrinous pleuritis in every patient. With continued dialysis the effusions resolved in 4 to 6 weeks after thoracentesis in 11 patients and recurred in 3 patients.

Triamterene, amiloride, ethacrynic acid, and furosemide were studied to determine whether they modified the digitalis-induced egress of myocardial potassium which is thought to facilitate the development of digitalis arrhythmias. In a control group of 15 dogs, potassium was measured in samples obtained simultaneously from the femoral artery (FA) and the coronary sinus (CS) in a control period and at intervals after the administration of 1 mg. of acetylstrophanthidin. Acetylstrophanthidin caused a significant increase in cardiac A-V difference in the potassium concentration (CS-FA) averaging 0.47 mEq. per liter. In a group of 10 dogs, when 175 mg. of triamterene was infused prior to the acetylstrophanthidin, the rise in A-V difference was abolished and the arrhythmias often aborted. In contrast, the infusion of potent diuretics (40 mg. of furosemide in five dogs and 100 mg. of ethacrynic acid in another five dogs) prior to acetylstrophanthidin, caused a doubling of the maximal A-V potassium difference. This study suggests that the clinical administration of antikaliuretic drugs may prevent the arrhythmias of digitalis toxicity not only by reducing kaliuresis and subsequent hypokalemia, but by a myocardial effect which antagonizes the digitalis-induced loss of myocardial potassium. Contrariwise, potent diuretics may facilitate digitalis arrhythmias through a myocardial action causing a greater egress of myocardial potassium, thus explaining the development of arrhythmias despite normal serum potassium levels. These potent diuretics should be used cautiously, especially when given intravenously to patients receiving digitalis.

Thirty vascular complications were seen in a group of 444 patients who had 516 arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis: 413 standard peripheral arteriovenous fistulas and 103 modifications, which included the use of 35 autogenous vein grafts and 62 bovine heterografts. Four hundred sixty-two of the fistulas were done with the radial or ulnar arteries, 53 with the brachial artery, and one with the superficial femoral artery. Symptomatic ischemia due to "steal" developed in eight patients (1.6%). Four of these patients developed gangrene, with one requiring finger amputation and three of them hand amputation. False aneurysms developed in 14 patients, ten infectious and four traumatic. Venous aneurysm requiring surgery developed in four patients and hand venous hypertension syndrome with chronic venous stasis in the hand was seen in four patients.

This study was undertaken to assess the importance of an elevated cardiac output in the generation of the hypertension associated with chronic renal failure. Forty stable uremic patients on a program of maintenance hemodialysis underwent hemodynamic studies. Cardiac index measured by dye dilution was found to be significantly elevated. Calculated peripheral vascular resistance was normal despite elevated blood pressure. Six patients underwent serial hemodynamic studies over a period of 6 to 12 weeks while being transfused with packed red blood cells to a normal hematocrit. Blood volume and body weight were constant during the study period. Cardiac index decreased during transfusion, reaching a normal level at a hematocrit of 30%. Diastolic blood pressure progressively rose, averaging an increase of 20 mm Hg at a hematocrit of 40%. Peripheral vascular resistance increased by 80% at a hematocrit of 40%. We concluded that the elevation of cardiac index in uremic patients is secondary to anemia and is reversible when the hematocrit is raised over 30%. The high cardiac index is not responsible for hypertension because restoration of cardiac index to normal by transfusion raises blood pressure rather than lowers it.

New photometry of Pluto was obtained to resolve the longstanding ambiguity in the synodic period of Pluto. Measurements obtained at Kitt Peak National Observatory on four consecutive nights in April 1973 show that the shorter period of 1d1819 is spurious and confirm the 6d3867 i 0.0003 period found by Hardie (1964). The times of mean light crossing on the rising branch yield an improved synodic period of 6d3874 i 0.0002 based on 20 years of observations. Key words: Pluto - photometry - rotational period
