The effect of gamma radiation administered to newly emerged adults of Dacus cucumis French on sterility and competitiveness was evaluated. A dose of 11 krad caused almost complete sterility in males while females given 6 krad were totally sterile, through infecundity. Sterilized males showed reduced competitiveness. In competitive mating tests a dose of 7 krad gave the lowest egg hatch and this hatch was significantly lower than that given by 9 and 11 krad. In a paired comparison mating test, 7 and 9 krad treated males mated significantly less frequently than untreated males, but the ability of 6 krad treated males was unimpaired. Copyright

Hitherto unavailable data on the biology and reproduction of Dacus cucumis French is presented. Sterilization of both sexes was achieved by topical application, tarsal contact, and oral administration of both metepa and hempa. Following topical application metepa was a better sterilant than hempa with male flies, but the reverse was true with females. When offered to adult flies in sugar, hempa was a better sterilant than metepa with both sexes and females required higher doses than males for complete sterility. At high levels of sterility the competitiveness of treated flies was reduced, but the data suggest, that following oral administration, hempa was less deleterious than metepa. Copyright

The susceptibility of a strain of Dacus tryoni (Froggatt) from New South Wales and a strain of Dacus cucumis French from south‐east Queensland to the insecticides DDT, DDD, malathion, azinphos methyl and carbaryl was investigated. The available evidence suggests that these strains were susceptible to the above insecticides and therefore the data could be used as reference data should resistance in these species be suspected in the future. Both species were able to detoxify DDT to DDE with D. cucumis having a greater capability than D. tryoni. In both species penetration of C‐DDT over a post‐treatment period of 72 hr was biphasic. In the initial phase of rapid penetration, the rate of penetration followed first‐order kinetics. As the post‐treatment temperature was increased from 21 to 25 to 30°C both the rate of absorption and metabolism of DDT increased, but metabolism increased relatively more than absorption.

The sterilizing effect of 1-13 krad of gamma radiation given to 2- to 6-hr-old adults of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) was established. Male sterility increased with increasing dose to reach 98 5% at 9 krad and 99.8% at 13 krad. The relationship between sterility and dose was similar to that found for males irradiated 2 days before eclosion. Above 3 krad, females produced eggs for 1 week, the number decreasing with increasing dose, and they then became infecund. When confined with untreated pairs in a 3: 1: 1: ratio, males treated With 5, 7, 9, or 11 krad 2 days before eclosion or as 2- to 6-hr-old adults reduced egg hatch to about the same extent. When males were irradiated in nitrogen 2 days before eclosion the gamma dose had to be increased by approximately 2.5 krad over that required in air to achieve a particular level of sterility. However, at the 98% level of male sterility, irradiation in nitrogen resulted in males which were 3 times more competitive than males irradiated in air.

Continued selection of the spotted root maggot, Euxesta notata (Wiedemann), with dieldrin or with DDT, applied to strains in which dieldrin resistance and DDT resistance had already been developed, resulted in a decrease in these resistances. Determinations of the genotype composition of successive generations indicated this to be due to the disappearance first of the RR homozygotes and ultimately of the rr homozygotes, resulting in the strains consisting entirely of dieldrin-resistant or DDT-resistant heterozygotes produced from heterozygotes. This fact was confirmed by determinations of percentage hatch of eggs, where the lethality operated. It is concluded that the factors for dieldrin resistance and for DDT resistance are probably on separate chromosomes and that 2 distinct balanced lethal systems were evolved by the prolonged selection with these insecticides.

Competitiveness of males of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), irradiated in the late pupal stage with 5 to 11-krad gamma radiation was evaluated from the egg hatch resulting when irradiated males were confined in various ratios with untreated pairs of insects. Competitiveness decreased with increased close. This factor counteracted the increased degree of sterility induced by increased dose, so doses of 5–11 krad led to similar reductions in egg hatch. With increased replication it was possible to distinguish between the degree of control given by 5-, 7-, or 9-krad-treated males and 9 krad gave the poorest control. Although 7 krad allowed a slightly higher level of fertility in males than did 9 krad (5% vs. 1–2%, respectively) the data indicate that use of 7 krad rather than 9 krad should be seriously considered in eradication, and especially suppression, programs for this species. Evidence was obtained that the presence of sterile females neither augmented nor detracted from the degree of control given by irradiated males. The egg hatch of females confined with irradiated males after an initial mating with untreated males was lowered, but to a smaller extent, as the dose given to males was increased from 5 to 11 krad. With the reverse mating sequence the increase in egg hatch was greater as the irradiation dose was increased.

SEVERAL investigators have reported on the use of single cereal grains as rations for turkeys. Poley and Wilson (1939) observed that no appreciable difference was noted in the rate of growth of medium sized Bronze turkeys fed corn, wheat or oats. However, North (1941) also working with medium sized Bronze turkeys, indicated that birds fed corn and wheat showed larger weight gains than those fed oats when the cereal grains were given as both the growing and finishing rations. When the grains were fed as a finishing ration only, little difference in weight gain was noted. Shrinkage or dressing losses for turkeys were reported by Herner (1936) to be less for birds fed oats than for those fed wheat. THE use of single cereal grains as turkey rations has been reported by Goertz et al. (1961). Maw (1939) fed broilers cereal grains and noted that those fed corn, wheat, or barley were superior to those fed oats; also that more fat was deposited in poultry fed corn than in those fed other cereal grains. In earlier work with roasters, Maw et al. (1936) noted that higher moisture losses were associated with smaller quantities of fat in the carcass. Arscott and Sather (1958) studied broilers fed corn or corn and barley with or without animal fat. The chemosterilant metepa, administered orally and topically to adult M. domestica, was found to reduce aliesterase activity, to reduce the hatch of eggs, and when administered orally it also prolonged the pre-ovipositional period. Orally administered DDT had little effect on aliesterase but did reduce egg viability. Selection of a strain of M. domestica with diazinon, in an attempt to increase its resistance to diazinon, had the unexpected result of the flies becoming more susceptible but concomitantly their level of aliesterase was significantly increased. The aliesterase level of the immature stages of M. domestica is reported.

INTRODUCTION INCREASED demand for pheasant meat has prompted some investigations on the production of pheasant, but little information is available on their eating quality. On the other hand, extensive research has been done on the various factors that affect the palatability of chicken and turkey and the flavor of chicken and turkey has been studied comparatively (Hall and Spencer, 1964). This study compares the eating quality and certain physical measurements of pheasant and turkey males and females. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The study was divided into two parts: 1) 13 pheasant cocks compared with 13 turkey toms, and 2) 13 pheasant hens compared with 13 turkey hens. Jumbo pheasants were obtained commercially and tom turkeys from the Kansas State Poultry Farm. The birds were slaughtered and processed by conventional methods and frozen under controlled conditions at the Kansas State University Poultry Research Center. INTRODUCTION LARGE scale processing of ready-to-cook, whole turkeys into turkey rolls and other convenient forms is developing rapidly. Providing convenient foods is a way to increase per capita consumption of turkey and offers lower transportation costs, less storage space, shorter cooking time, and better portion control. INTRODUCTION TOTAL preparation time could be reduced and convenience increased if turkey could be cooked directly from the frozen state and still maintain high quality. Increased utilization of turkey may result if defrosting is not necessary. Commercial processors are interested in methods that will reduce cooking losses and time and still maintain palatability and quality characteristics (Bowers et al., 1965). This study compared quality and acceptability of turkey halves cooked from the frozen or defrosted state by pressure (15 p.s.i.) or braising at oven temperatures of 163° or 176°C. (325° or 350°F.) to an internal temperature of 80°C. (176°F.) in the breast. MANY strains of Bronze and White turkeys are raised and marketed in Kansas and other states but little information is available as to possible differences in edible yield that might be attributable to either strain or variety. Aliesterase was found in all stages of Blattella germanica (L.) with the activity of oothecae being approximately 24% that of newly emerged adults. In both mated and unmated females aliesterase activity was cyclical. When applied topically to newly emerged adults, both triortho-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) and its solvent, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) reduced aliesterase activity. Although the data were variable, it is probable that increasing the dosage from 90 to 180 μg TOCP per insect increased the degree of inhibition of aliesterase. TOCP, and MEK, increased the period required by a female to produce an ootheca, increased the duration of pregnancy and decreased the hatch of nymphs from the ootheca. In these respects the effect of 90 μg TOCP was greater than that caused by MEK, but increasing the dosage of TOCP to 180 μg per insect had no additional effect. It is hypothesised that aliesterase(s) is associated with production of oothecae and with vitellogenesis. There was a peak of aliesterase activity in male insects approximately 14 days after emergence, but the level of activity at this time was significantly higher in mated than in unmated males.

Male Ceratitis capitala (Weidemann) given gamma doses of 1–17 krad 2 days before adult eclosion were confined with untreated males and females in ratios of 5:1:1, 9:1:1, and 19:1:1. With the first 2 ratios, the egg hatch of treatments using 5-, 7-, 9-, or 11-krad-treated males was not significantly different despite an increase in male sterility from approximately 89 to more than 99%. In the 19:1:1 ratio experiment, the 7-krad treatment gave the lowest egg hatch, and it was significantly lower than that for the 11-krad treatment. Males irradiated with greater than 3 krad were less competitive than untreated males based on a comparison of observed and expected egg hatch. When the competitiveness of the irradiated males was quantified, it was clear that as the dose increased male competitiveness decreased.

Larvae of 5 susceptible strains and of a highly DDT-resistant strain of the southern house mosquito, Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say (= C.p. fatigans Wiedemann), metabolized DDT to DDE (2,2-bis ( p -chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloroethylene) and 4 strains also produced TDE. Of the susceptible strains, 3 had a high metabolic activity and produced both DDE and TDE and 2 were less active and produced only DDE. Preliminary evidence suggests that the TDE is produced by dechlorination. It was not possible to correlate DDT-resistance with dehydrochlorination, but the resistant strain seemed to be characterized by decreased absorption of DDT and increased excretion of metabolites.
