N-Acetyl-proline-methylamide (APMA) was synthesized by the mixed anhydride method and investigated by IR. spectroscopy and chemical relaxation measurements. The temperature-induced variation of the IR. absorption bands of the internally hydrogen bonded (b) and of the extended, unbonded (e) species at 3330 and 3450 cm−1 respectively, were used to evaluate the molar absorptivities, a(b) = 280 and a(e) = 50 l/mol · cm, the equilibrium constant K = 0.70, and the molar enthalpy of reaction ΔH = − 2280 ± 60 cal/mol. The entropy was estimated to be in the range − 8 to − 9 e.u. The reaction rates of this conformational transition were measured by the chemical dipole field effect. The relaxation time of the rate process is τ = 2.7 · 10−9s, the rate constant for the formation of the hydrogen bond k(b) is 2.2 · 108 s−1, and that for the unfolding accompanied by the breakage of the amide hydrogen bond k(e) is 1.5 · 108s−1.

The nucleation efficiency of an urban aerosol is closely related to its chemical composition, which is strongly affected by human activities. Sulfates and leadbromochloride have been found to temporarily increase the surface solubility and capillarity of naturally produced insoluble clay particles. This phenomenon alters the atmospheric nuclei budget and affects the natural mechanisms that remove pollutants from the atmosphere.

1. Das Auge von Daphnia pulex ist ein Appositionsauge von annahernd kugeliger Gestalt, zusammengesetzt aus 22 Ommatidien, die ziemlich gleichmasig uber die Oberflache verteilt sind. Das einzelne Ommatidium ist zum eukonen Bautypus zu rechnen. Es fehlen Corneagen- und Kegelzellen. Eine Pigmentwanderung ist nicht nachweisbar. 2. Das Intensitatsintervall, innerhalb dessen die Unterschiedsschwelle gelegen sein mus, last sich weitgehend einengen, ohne das dadurch der Versuchsausfall beeinflust wurde. Die Unterschiedsschwelle ist also sehr scharf ausgepragt und liegt, wenigstens fur die Tiere einer Population, ganz identisch. Auch im Grenzgebiet der Unterschiedsschwelle richten sich die Tiere streng nach ihren optischen Eindrucken. 3. Fur die Abhangigkeit der relativen Unterschiedsschwelle von der Intensitat ergibt sich eine Kurve, die einen deutlichen Knick bei einer Intensitat von etwa 400 Lux zeigt. Von hier steigt die Kurve nach beiden Seiten an; mit abnehmender Intensitat wird diese Zunahme rasch groser, mit wachsender Intensitat aber bald nur mehr gering. 4. Die Kurve fur die Abhangigkeit der relativen Unterschiedsschwelle vom Logarithmus der Intensitat zeigt den gleichen Knick, doch liegen die Punkte jederseits des Knickes auf einer Geraden. Diese Kurve zeigt keinerlei Ahnlichkeit mit den entsprechenden an anderen Objekten ermittelten Kurven. Im besonderen zeigt sie noch bei Intensitaten einen kraftigen Abfall, wo dies sonst nie mehr der Fall ist. 5. Die absolute Unterschiedsschwelle ist bis zu einer Intensitat von 400 Lux konstant, dann wachst sie als lineare Funktion der Intensitat. Es ist also ebenfalls der Knick bei 400 Lux vorhanden. 6. Die fur Daphnia gefundenen Kurven lassen sich auf keinen Fall als stetige Exponentialkurven deuten. 7. Die Unterscheidung der Helligkeiten mus auf dem Wege zwischen Sinnesorgan und Erfolgsorgan stattfinden. Auf diesem Wege lassen sich in der Regel vier aufeinanderfolgende Stufen unterscheiden: 1. Die Auslosung chemischer Prozesse im Sinnesorgan durch den Reiz. 2. Die Auslosung einer Nervenerregung durch das Endprodukt der chemischen Prozesse. 3. Die Weiterleitung der Nervenerregung. 4. Die Ubertragung der Nervenerregung auf das Erfolgsorgan. 8. Es wird angenommen, das die von Hartline und Graham (1932) fur Limulus gefundene Beziehung zwischen Reiz und Aktionsstromfrequenz in ihrer allgemeinen Form auch fur Daphnia Gultigkeit hat. Danach tritt nach Setzung eines wirksamen Reizes zunachst eine maximale Anfangsfrequenz (Maximalfrequenz) des Aktionsstromes auf, die in wenigen Sekunden zur Dauerfrequenz absinkt. Jene ist bis zum Intensitatsbereich des direkten Sonnenlichtes eine lineare Funktion des Logarithmus der Intensitat, diese eine lineare Funktion der hundertsten Wurzel der Intensitat. 9. Hinsichtlich der Umwandlung des Reizes in Nervenerregung werden die Hechtschen Anschauungen zugrunde gelegt: Expositions zeitprozes S ⇄ A + P; Latenzzeitprozes: L ⇄ T. 10. Es wird angenommen, das die Aktionsstromfrequenz direkt proportional ist dem Niveau von T. 11. Das Auftreten einer maximalen Anfangsfrequenz und anderer anfanglicher Frequenzstorungen last sich durch eine gewisse Tragheit der Wiederaufbauprozesse erklaren. 12. Es gibt Falle, wo das Zerfallsprodukt des Latenzzeitprozesses direkt auf das Erfolgsorgan einwirkt unter Umgehung des Nervensystems. Reaktionsauslosend ist nur eine Niveauanderung von T. 13. Wenn das Nervensystem am Zustandekommen der Reflexe beteiligt ist, konnen nach dem Verhalten der Tiere zwei Arten von Reaktionen unterschieden werden: 1. Der Aktionsstrom wirkt an sich reaktionsauslosend, die Reaktion dauert so lange an, wie der AktionsStrom wahrt (Phototaxis). 2. Der Aktionsstrom an sich ist nicht reaktionsauslosend, sondern nur eine Frequenzanderung (Licht- und Schattenreflex, optomotorische Reaktionen usw.). In diesem Falle ist im Zentralnervensystem eine selektive Sperre eingeschaltet, die nur bei Frequenzanderung den Aktionsstrom vorubergehend durchlast, sich aber in ganz kurzer Zeit auf die neue Frequenz einstellt. 14. Im simultanen Zweilichterversuch werden von den beiden Lichtquellen stets verschiedene Ommatidien getroffen. Von jeder Lichtquelle wird ein Reflex ausgelost, der fur sich allein das Tier der betreffenden Lichtquelle zulenken wurde. Da die beiden Reflexe auf das gleiche Erfolgsorgan, aber in gegensatzlicher Weise einzuwirken suchen, mussen sie in Wettstreit geraten. 15. Die den Reizen entsprechenden Aktionsstrome werden auf getrennten afferenten Bahnen dem Gehirn zugeleitet, dort aber auf die selben efferenten Bahnen umgeschaltet. Die beiden Aktionsstrome treffen also im Gehirn aufeinander. 16. Das Gehirn stellt nur ein ubergeordnetes Hemmungszentrum dar, das bewirkt, das abwechselnd dem einen Reflex der Weg zum Erfolgsorgan freigegeben, der andere aber gehemmt wird. Durch bevorzugte Freigabe des einen Reflexes kommt es zur Bevorzugung der helleren Lichtquelle. 17. Masgebend fur die Helligkeitsunterscheidung ist der Frequenz unterschied der Aktionsstrome. 18. Die Adaptation an die Helligkeitsverhaltnisse vor Versuchsbeginn hat keinen Einflus auf den Versuchsausfall. 19. Der Knick in den empirisch gefundenen Kurven kann weder durch die Beteiligung einer wechselnden Zahl von Ommatidien, noch durch eine Anderung eines Schaltmechanismus im Gehirn, sondern nur durch das Vorhandensein zweier verschiedener Sehstoffe im Auge erklart werden. Der bei niedrigen Intensitaten funktionierende Sehstoff wird als N-Stoff, der andere als H-Stoff bezeichnet. 20. Damit ist zum ersten Mal auf physiologischem Wege das Bestehen einer Duplizitatstheorie des Sehens fur einen Wirbellosen nachgewiesen. 21. Die Duplizitatstheorie fur Daphnia unterscheidet sich wesentlich von der fur die Wirbeltiere dadurch, das beide Sehstoffe ein Farbensehen zu vermitteln vermogen, wahrend der Sehpurpur der Wirbeltiere dazu nicht befahigt ist. Ferner ist der Wirkungsbereich des N-Stoffes viel groser, der des H-Stoffes viel kleiner (Ubergangsbereich bei etwa 400 Lux) als der Wirkungsbereich von Stabchen- und Zapfensubstanz (Ubergangsbereich bei etwa 0,03 Lux). 22. Eine Lokalisierung der beiden Sehstoffe im Daphnienauge ist noch nicht moglich. Es kann aber vermutet werden, das der H-Stoff sich in der Retinulazelle befindet, deren Nervenfaser zentral im Ommatidiennerven gelegen ist. Die ubrigen Retinulazellen wurden dann den N-Stoff enthalten.

Understocking of commercial Douglas-fir stands may markedly reduce financial return. The experiment reported herein was designed to study the effects of initial understocking, to analyze them within a financial framework, and to provide guides for the economic management of young-growth Douglas-fir stands. Four model stands at initial stocking rates of 25, 50, 751 and 100 per cent of normal stand values formed the basis of the experiment. Results were as follows: Difference in total physical output between initially understocked and fully-stocked stands is minor, but quality of output, as measured by sawmill and peeler logs, is much lower in the understocked stands. Maximum reductions in net income and soil expectation values at 3 per cent interest were $612 and $44 per acre, respectively, for stands of low initial stocking. Pruning and planting (at 3 per cent) are feasible means of eliminating or reducing the quality differential on some stands and sites. However, the level of profitability varies between stocking and site, and is highest on fully-stocked, highest-site lands. Thus, where funds for management inputs are limited, they should be allocated first to stands of high initial stocking and best sites. When the interest rate was figured at 5 per cent, it was found that natural stands of the initial stocking levels and sites studied here can be profitably operated at that rate. Under the 5 per cent rate, maximum soil expectation values were reduced substantially, and rotation ages were shortened. In addition, there was little difference in soil expectation values between the initially understocked and fully-stocked stands. This indicates that, within biological limits, stocking is not the important factor in economic success of a forest enterprise operating at a 5 per cent rate of return that it is under a 3 per cent rate. These conclusions would indicate that a “do-nothing” policy with respect to fill-in planting and pruning is the most profitable one. However, it is recognized that this is indicated only under conditions where stumpage values do not increase commensurate with interest rates.

The release of sodium atoms from compounds such as NaCl, NaBr, NaI, Na 2 SO 4 , and NaHCO 3 has been studied with a newly developed flame scintillation spectrophotometer. The process of vaporization of the atoms appears to be largely a surface phenomenon and is discussed in terms of surface energies of the crystals and dissociation energies of the molecules. The results indicate significance for an understanding of the flame scintillation method in its application to air chemistry, and with regard to the thermal instability of certain substances.

The integrating nephelometer of Beuttel and Brewer has been modified for studies of air pollution. The instrument, which is simple, stable, and inexpensive to construct, has been operated continuously for several months. Interpretation of the data is simplified by use of a theoretical approach which indicates that the measured light scattering coefficient is proportional to the mass of suspended participates for well-aged atmospheric aerosols.

The results of this study show that a system of simple log grades based upon surface characteristics may be useful in working with second-growth ponderosa pine grown at medium elevations. Such log grades can provide a basis for improved appraisals of both logs and standing timber by enabling a more accurate prediction of probable lumber grade recovery. In the study area there appeared to be little benefit from grading logs with scaling diameters of less than 14 inches by the particular system used. Above this diameter, however, the differences in lumber grade recovery between log grades increased rapidly. The study also shows that untended stands of second-growth ponderosa pine yield a fair quality of lumber running largely to common grades. The economic aspects of improving grade recovery by pruning require separate study.

The obstetric and clinical factors, including drugs and x-ray procedures, that characterize the mothers of 61 Mongoloid infants from the Collaborative Project have been reviewed and compared to a control group matched for age, race, hospital, and date of the last menstrual period. The incidence of Mongolism in whites and Negroes is nearly equal. The distribution of incidence by age is bimodal. There are more white mothers of Mongoloid infants in the younger age groups and more Negroes in the older age groups. We find essentially no difference in parity, pregnancy-free interval, number of prior abortions, or medical history between the study and control groups. Both the birth weight and duration of pregnancy are slightly less for the study group than for the controls. There are more male than female Mongoloid infants. The similar drug and x-ray experience of the study and control groups is noted.

The recent revolution in steelmaking brought about through the development of low-cost tonnage oxygen has resulted in yet another new steel producing technique. The rotor process, now in the plant-scale operation stage at Oberhausen in Germany, may hold the promise oj economic production of open-hearth grades of steel from plants supplied with widely varying types of iron ore.

Thirty-three umbilical catheters from 24 newborn infants were divided serially into1/2 inch segments and cultured. Positive cultures were obtained from 57 per cent of all catheters (6/11 arterial; 13/22 venous) and from 71 per cent of the patients. Pseudomonas (9) and staphylococci (9) were the bacteria most often recovered. The incidence of positive cultures was not reduced by systemic antibiotics, early insertion (under 6 hours), or early removal (under 24 hours). Bacteria were demonstrated within the lumens of the catheters.
