Cases in which there is a lateral nasal proboscis on one side have been described and illustrated fairly frequently. The early literature has been reviewed by Grunberg (1909), Zausch (1926), Berblinger (1928), and Stupka (1938). Cases have been described also by Blair and Brown (1931), Biber (1949), Smith (1950), Cottle et al. (1956), Meyer (1956), and Bremer (1956). The case presented here had a lateral nasal proboscis on each side; we have found no reference to such an instance and thus consider it worth while reporting. We have called the condition bilateral nasal proboscis. REPORT OF A CASE The mother of the infant to be described was 39 years of age. Her previous two children are alive and well with no abnormalities. During her third pregnancy, which terminated with the birth of the malformed baby, there was hydramnios. Artificial respiration is an important part of cardiorespiratory resuscitation. Mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose breathing, or both, are considered the most effective methods if special equipment is not available. Instances of resuscitation, which can be analyzed on purely medical grounds, are described in the Bible. On the basis of early postbiblical literature it is shown that the prophet Elisha, contrary to general belief, was not the first to use mouth-to-mouth breathing, and that the origins of artificial respiration are in ancient Hebrew folkloric medicine.

The Bible, apart from its many other wonderful aspects, is an inexhaustible treasure of interesting medical themes. Scattered allusions were gathered in this paper to form a picture of nasal deformities in biblical times, as seen from the point of view of modern rhinology.
