An analysis of the Poetry of Luis Pales Matos, Jose A. Portuondo, and Nicolas Guillen. (DS)

A combined neuropathological and neurochemical study of a patient who succumbedto maple syrup disease is presented. The principal anatomic abnormalities were in the white matter and included generalized cerebral edema, astrocytosis, oligodendroglial swelling, and a decreased amount of myelin. On chemical analysis the concentrations of all major lipid fractions were within normal limits for the patient's age. Cerebrosides, sulfatides, and ceramides were isolated and their structure verified. Although the relative amounts of long-chain fatty acids in all three glycolipids was markedly reduced as compared with that of adult tissues, the fatty acid pattern was similar to that of control specimens of comparable age.

Summary A fatal case of acute yellow atrophy of the liver occurring in a femalechild of 12 years is presented with autopsy findings. The experience in this case demonstrates the importance of repeated determinations of the icterus index, van den Bergh reaction, and blood cholesterol (total, free, and esters) in any case of liver disease, irrespective of the mildness of the clinical picture. A rising icterus index, an increase in intensity of the jaundice, and an increase in blood cholesterol content with a reversal of free cholesterol to esters are of grave prognostic significance The presence of leucine and tyrosine crystals in the urine is confirmative of, but their absence is not prejudicial to, a diagnosis.

A circadian rhythm in gastric content is reported in normal mice. The high values appear in the middle of the activity (dark) period and the trough figures are seen at the end of the rest (light) period. The rhythm appears delayed during the first 24‐hr period after hepatectomy but reappears with its normal timing during the second 24‐hr period.

A highly suggestive correlation between blood ammonia levels on the one hand and alterations of mental status and characteristic involuntary movements on the other in patients with liver disease has been reported by many workers. 1-5 Complete reviews of our current knowledge of ammonia metabolism have been published recently by Bessman 6 and by Chalmers. 7 The concept of a relationship of blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) ammonia levels to neurologic findings apart from mental changes and the typical hepatic "flap," however, has received relatively little attention. In particular, the correlation of specific findings in either the neurologic, general physical, or laboratory examinations of patients with liver disease, with blood or CSF ammonia levels has not, to our knowledge, been the subject of any rigorous study.
