Cytogenetic preparations were obtained by brushing the rectal mucosa during proctoscopy. Of 61 individuals examined, 33 provided reliable material for chromosomal analysis: 10 normal controls, 5 with Crohn’s disease involving the colon, 10 with chronic ulcerative colitis, 4 with ulcerative colitis complicated by cancer of the colon in whom special care was taken to obtain separated samples from both colitic and cancerous tissue, and 4 with cancer of the colon alone. Chromosome count and karyotypes were normal i n all controls and patients with Crohn’s disease. In chronic ulcerative colitis the modal chromosome number remained i n the diploidy range. But aneuploid cells, or possible broken polyploid were seen in 2 patients, and in the inflamed mucosa of 2 other patients with cancer of the colon associated with ulcerative colitis. All these cells were i n the hypotetraploidy range. No chromatid breaks were found in the controls and in patients with Crohn’s disease, but patients with ulcerative colitis and colon cancer demonstrated a variable number of breaks. Profound abnormalities were demonstrated in patients with carcinoma, characterized by aneuploidy, chromatid breaks and marker chromosomes. This study documents significant chromosomal abnormalities i n chronic ulcerative colitis, both in patients with and without colonic cancer. Cancer 34:684-695, 1974.

Hyperfine interactions for Ta impurities in a polycrystalline nickel matrix produced by quenching from the melt have been studied using the perturbed-angular-correlation technique. An effective hyperfine field of -89.8 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 1.6 kOe was measured for substitutional atoms. The fraction of the impurities occupying various lattice positions, and the respective hyperfine fields have been determined, and changes in lattice location and hyperfine field after annealing of the source have been studied.

Recent work from this laboratory has shown striking variations in the salivary gland RNA metabolism during the larval development ( Lara and Hollander, 1967 ; Armelin, Meneghini and Lara, unpublished results). These results are substantiated by the data of the present study on the kinetics of uridine-H3 incorporation into that RNA at two distinct periods of larval life — before and during the appearance of the giant puffs. It was also observed that, at both these stages, inhibition by actinomycin revealed the presence of unstable RNA classes. However, before the appearance of the giant puffs, the inhibition by the antibiotic is followed by a rather unexpected recovery of incorporation capacity. This effect is possibly due to an active DNA multiplication at this particular stage.

Así, el rey actuaría por encima de una general jurisdicció que fortalecería su autoridad al mismo tiempo que la limitaba, mediante el acuerdo moral-religioso de la res publica christiana. La obra de juristas y teólogos en el Principado dirigía así la competencia del rey al estatus de figura pública, la cual, antes de forjar la autocracia monárquica, aislaría la voluntad personal del monarca en un concepto diferente de soberanía.

The role of exfoliative cytology in the differential diagnosis was studied in 631 gastric ulcers (70 malignant and 561 benign). In the group of 70 malignant ulcers (61 Borrmann Type II and nine of superficial gastric carcinoma), cytology was positive in 51 instances. The positive cytological examination (saline washing) was particularly helpful in 20 patients (of a total of 33) with inconclusive or benign roentgenographic examinations. Direct vision brushing cytology appeared to be helpful also, and its use combined with endoscopic biopsy resulted in complete diagnostic success in all of 50 patients with esophageal and gastric tumors of various types, including five ulcer-cancers. Variable degrees of cell atypia may present diagnostic problems, but their identification permits increasingly accurate differentiation of benign gastric ulcer from “ulcer-cancer.”

The electret state was produced in Teflon and carnauba wax by simultaneous action of penetrating radiation and an electric field. Polymethylmethacrylate, polyvinylacetate, polystyrene, polyethylene, and nylon did not form electrets under these conditions. The shapes of isothermal decay curves and thermal depolarization ``glow curves'' were used to calculate activation energies for the depolarization process in Teflon. The average activation energy as calculated from the ``initial rise'' of thermodepolarization curves was 0.93 eV. The persistent heterocharge of carnauba wax and of certain polymers may be caused by the orientation of dipolar units composed of a positive molecular ion and a partially solvated electron.

An extraction method resulting in nearly optimal conditions for RNA extraction from salivary-gland cells of Rhynchosciara angelae, as well as a fractionation method for these cells which yields one nuclear and two cytoplasmic fractions, is described. Using these methods, RNA synthesis was studied during middle fourth instar. At this time rRNA was preferentially synthesized, and several rRNA precursors were identified. Heavy RNA and RNA with messenger characteristics were also found. The sedimentation characteristics of RNA obtained from several cellular fractions obtained are reported.

The coexistence of 2 endemic diseases—goiter and Chagas' disease—in certain areas of Brazil suggested to Carlos Chagas a possible relationship of these 2 entities. Thyroid function was studied in Chagas' patients and in non-Chagas' controls, living in one of these regions where there is a high prevalence of both Chagas' disease and goiter. The incidence of goiter and the results of thyroid function tests were not significantly different in these 2 groups. It is concluded that Chagas' disease does not interfere with thyroid function.

Núcleo medular de la estilística es la expresión metafórica. Una vida personal, por muy sencilla que sea, siempre necesitará de la metáfora si quiere revelar el mundo interior. Así, la encontraremos en el hombre de la calle, en el aldeano, en le burgués, en el aristócrata, en el político, en el artista como suprema animadora de la expresión . Su origen está en el hombre cuando habla comparando. Su valor estético consiste ñeque es creación. El artista es tal cuando pone su actividad creadora a su público, enseña el cuadro a su público. Este es el ambiente propicio para la plenitud de la emoción estética en el doble campo del autor y de su público. Ambos han de ser, en distintos planos creadores. De lo dicho podría deducirse que no hay creación artística sin público. El carácter esencial de la metáfora es su sintetismo intuitivo que lleva en su naturaleza depuradora. La obra lleva en sí cualitativamente la virtud estética de verdadera obra de arte. Por eso, la riqueza metafórica es anhelo de no pocas escuelas artísticas, que ya no se contentan con lo que de metafórico tiene el arte ( retrato, paisaje, melodía, teatro...) sino que acude a perquirir reiteradamente, la metáfora por la belleza que en sí misma se revela hasta sorprendernos con su propia existencia, o lo persigue o forja como elemento ornamental. O presente trabalho consta de três partes. na primeira discutimos a correlação angular direcional gama-gama, suas aplicações e seu desempenho frente a outras técnicas. Na segunda parte procuramos resumir a situação atual do estudo de interações hiperfinas magnéticas em matrizes ferromagnéticas. Na terceira parte descrevemos e apresentamos os resultados da medida, à temperatura ambiente, de campos magnéticos hiperfinos atuando nos núcleos de 181Ta difundidos em matriz de Niquel. O método empregado foi o da correlação angular diferencial gama-gama. The present work has three parts. In the first we discuss the directional gamma-gamma angular correlations and the applications of this technique. A comparison is made between perturbed angula correlations (PAC) and other techniques used to measure hyperfine interactions. In the second part we make a resume of the magnetic hyperfine interactions studies in ferromagnetic matrices. The experimental data of our measurements of magnetic matrices. The experimental data of our measurements of magnetic hyperfine fields in the 181 Ta Ni system at room temperature are described in the third part. All the measurements werw performed by gamma-gamma differential angular correlation technique.

A DNA-like RNA fraction was obtained by extracting at high temperature the interphase remaining after treatment of Rhynchosciara salivary glands with phenol in the cold, at neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. This RNA is mainly of nuclear origin but most of it is not bound to chromatin. Several other characteristics of this RNA fraction are also described.
