The conductance of aqueous solutions of [v-phenenyltris(oxyethylene)]tris[triethylammonium] iodide and trimetaphosphate (SynI3and SynP3O9) has been measured at 25°C. For SynI3negative deviations from the Onsager limiting law are observed, larger then the ones for LaCl3, La(NO3)3or Na3P3O9. For SynP3O9negative deviations are also observed, but these are smaller than those for LaFe(CN)6or LaCo(CN)6. These results indicate that between the Syn3+cation and the I- anion there is an interaction that is not entirely electrostatic in nature, and which is not present between Syn3+and P3O93−. A donation of π electrons by the benzene ring to the I-ion, or a hydrophobic bond between Syn3+and I−, are suggested as possible causes of this interaction.
