A high incidence of susceptibility to psittacosis and vaccinia hemagglutinins was found for erythrocytes from White Leghorn whereas a low incidence was found in New Hampshire Red chickens. Meningopneumonitis, feline pneumonitis, and mouse pneumonitis agents also selectively agglutinated chicken erythrocytes. Evidence was obtained for the presence of only one hemagglutinin in chlamydial preparations capable of agglutinating chicken and mouse erythrocytes.

The wavefunction derived in a previous calculation for the linear symmetrical H3 system has been improved by the addition of new configurations. These have been constructed from the basis set of Slater orbitals used before, enlarged with a set of five Gaussian functions placed along the internuclear axis. The lowering of the energy calculated was encouraging so that this appears to provide an effective means of enlarging the basis set which does not lead to a great increase in the computational effort.

A full configuration interaction treatment has been carried out for linear, symmetrical H3 activated complex, with a limited basis set of Slater orbitals. A similar calculation is performed on H2 in order to obtain an estimate of the activation energy of the reaction H+H2=H2+H. The variation of nonlinear parameters in the basis set is studied and the different behaviour of the H3 and H2 resulting wave functions examined. — A larger basis set is needed.

The wave functions obtained from configuration interaction treatment of H2 (eight configurations) and H3 (sixty-two) are examined. The relative magnitudes of the coefficients of the various terms are discussed and conclusions are drawn as to how the present functions might be simplified and improved.

Concentrated hemagglutinin of psittacosis agent was reactive in gel diffusion with sera collected from cases of human chlamydial infections and animal immune serum. The reactions obtained with human sera appeared to be associated with chlamydial group antigen. A second antigen was detected in the hemagglutinin preparations when they were diffused against rabbit antipsittacosis serum.

THE USE of fibrinolytic agents in the treatment of acute coronary thrombosis seems to offer promising results. Various reports have been made that fibrinolysins have been used intravenously with encouraging results for the lysis of thrombi at numerous sites within the vascular system.1,2,3 Thrombi have been artificially produced in coronary arteries by various methods and, after their creation, treated with fibrinolytic agents.4 However, these methods involved considerable dissection of the coronary arteries, with partial ligation of segments of the vessels, and the injection of the thrombus into an isolated segment of a coronary artery, with temporary proximal and distal occlusion of the selected site.Our objective was to place into the coronary arterial system a thrombus of the clotted blood of the animal operated on, and to do so without imposing trauma or other abnormal conditions on the coronary arteries. Results in 53 llamas (33 mated animals and 20 controls) showed that ovulation is copulation-induced in this species. Ovulation without copulation occasionally occurred during the height of the recognized breeding season in Bolivia.The first mating during the luteal phase (12–24 days after the preceding ovulation) resulted in ovulation in four out of ten llamas.Determination of pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH) content showed the highest level on the day before mating (9·00 μg./mg.) and the lowest level on day 4 (6·25 μg./mg.). LH level on day 8 was significantly higher than on day 4 (7·62 μg./mg.). Corpora lutea (c.l.) were well formed on day 4 after mating (408 mg.), reached a maximum size by day 8 (1920 mg.) and rapidly decreased in size to day 16 (136 mg.). The corpus albicans remained as an entity but decreased in size to 21 mg. on day 120. Similar changes were found in c.l. histology and progesterone content. The combined results indicate that the functional life of the c.l. in a non-pregnant llama is 16 days or less.Treatment with 25 i.u. human chorionic gonadotrophin was sufficient to cause ovulation in 50% of the animals treated.A large (150 mg.) dose of norethandrolone did not cause morphological regression of the c.l. when measured 5 days after treatment. Treatment with 5 mg. daily for 14 days caused regression of c.l. as compared with untreated controls and animals treated with oestradiol valerate.

The NH3-H+ interaction is used as a model for discussing the usefulness of energy multipole expansions for interactions where the first order energy plays an important role. The multipole results for the first order energy are analysed formally and are compared numerically with the non-expanded first order energy for a variety of NH3-H+ relative configurations. The results are used to discuss the limitations of the multipole expansion of the first order energy which can be very severe for some NH3-H+ collision trajectories.

The lipid composition of the concentrated hemagglutininating active fraction (HF) of allantoic fluid from infected eggs, but free from Chlamydia psittaci6BC, was compared to concentrated normal allantoic fluid (NAF). Phosphatidyl-choline (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine were the major lipid classes of the total phospholipid fraction. Some quantitative differences were found in the amount of PC and phosphatidylserine present in HF and NAF. Lysophosphatidylcholine was present in HF but absent in NAF. Triglycerides and sterols were the major lipid classes found in neutral lipids of HF and NAF. Quantitative data showed distinct differences in the amount of different neutral lipid classes present between HF and NAF. The fatty acids of various classes of lipids were examined, and differences were noted in a number of phospholipids, sterol esters, and the free fatty acids. Branched-chain saturated fatty acids were found in many lipid classes of the HF, particularly in the phosphatidylethanolamine fraction, but were absent in the NAF.

Six experiments—three with sugarcane, one with pineapples, and two with coffee—were completed with P32to determine what percentage of the phosphorus was taken by the crop from the fertilizer and from the soil respectively. Five different methods of applying the fertilizer to coffee trees were also studied. Superphosphate tagged with P32was used. The contents of total P and P32in the crop leaves served as an index for this work. The data and results obtained in the sixth experiment, the second with coffee, are presented here. A second objective of the experiment was to determine if the leguminous trees, that serve as shade to the coffee trees, absorb part of the phosphorus added as a fertilizer. The results obtained indicate that coffee trees absorbed a highly significantly greater percentage of the phosphorus from the fertilizer when it was broadcast over the whole or over a 2‐foot wide outer segment of the canopy area than when it was applied in bands, in holes, or over the terrace. The results indicate also that the leguminous shade trees absorb part of the phosphorus applied to the coffee trees.
