Summary The cases of upper gastrointestinal bleeding admitted to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital during the ten year period 1938–1947 have been studied. There were 208 admissions of 181 patients. The etiology of the bleeding and the degree of bleeding have been tabulated. "Peptic Ulcer" accounted for 78 per cent of the cases. Conservative treatment consisting of feeding diets, anti-acids, antispasmodics and transfusions was used in all cases. Bleeding was controlled in all but 14 cases, 7 per cent of the total. In one case perforation occurred requiring emergency closure. In two cases gastric resection was done successfully on the eighth and fifteenth hospital day respectively because hemorrhage from an ulcer was uncontrolled. The other 12 cases died from hemorrhage. The diagnosis and clinical course of these cases are tabulated. It was noted that patients admitted with evidence of mild hemorrhage may at a later date exsanguinate. The mortality of this conservative treatment must be left up to the reader depending on his interpretation of the salvage possibilities of the fatal cases. The mortality could vary from 10 per cent to 2.4 per cent.

Sea lions aborting on San Miguel Island, California, and fur seals on St. Paul Island, Alaska, were studied for the presence of infectious disease agents. Leptospira were isolated from both groups and may have been one cause of reproductive failure in both species. From a total of seven virus isolations made, one isolate from fur seals and two isolates from sea lions appear antigenically related by serum neutralization tests. In their host range, morphology, and physicochemical properties, the virus isolates are indistinguishable from Vesicular Exanthema of Swine Virus. Six mycoplasma isolations have been made but have not been fully characterized. A fungus, Scopulariopsis sp., isolated from three different sea lions, is the same genus that was repeatedly isolated from Navy divers during prolonged submergence studies.

Disease surveillance in animals closely associated with man provides important xoonotic sentinel information. Often animals are accurate models of response to environmental factors that also effect man. This is especially true and of even greater significance in recent years with the ever increasing list of viral and chemical carcinogens. One hundred and fifty neoplastic cases from Northwest Florida were reviewed. Ninety-one (60.7%) were benign and 59 (39.3%) were malignant. Dogs accounted for the majority of the tabulations. The skin was the most common site of both malignant and benign neoplasms. The occurrence of lymphosarcoma in the dog was higher than reported as average in the United States. Internal hydrocephalus was observed in a newborn llama (Llama glama). The animal was sacrificed after 6 days of signs of intractable central nervous system disease.

A 4 year old female African bush elephant developed a slowly-growing mass of 6 months' duration on the medial aspect of the carpal area of the right front leg. Histopathological examination revealed a low grade fibrosarcoma.

A 10 year old male Indian leopard developed a rapidly enlarging mass on the volar left forepaw. Histopathologic examination revealed a basal cell tumor. No reoccurrence has been reported to date, 1 year after excision.
