Abstract

The study forecasts the utilization of the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) in conferences, institutes, short courses, workshops, seminars, and special training programs within the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. (A CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience.) The methodology section discusses questionnaire design, panel selection, questionnaire processing, and data tabulation. Data is presented in four subject areas: administration, faculty, finance, and nonacademic utilization. Data from all three rounds of the Delphi process are presented. The percentage of panel members stating that a prediction should or should not occur, as well as the panel's assigned probability indicated by the median, lower quartile, and upper quartile of each prediction is presented. Each prediction is followed by a table indicating the information collected in each round, a general discussion concerning data presented in the table, and implications of comments made by panel members. Based on data collected, by 1980 the CEU will be: (1) awarded by most accredited colleges and universities, (2) used to measure faculty work load, (3) be supported financially by businesses and professional societies, and (4) become the basis for updating and relicensing for major professional organizations. Abstract

The continuing education unit (CEU) has been designed to facilitate the accumulation and exchange of standardized information about individual participation in noncredit continuing education. The CEU is to be applied only after content, format, and methodology have been determined to avoid creating stereotypes in terms of program length, methods, or formats used in meeting educational objectives. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. It has several uses for the individual, professional organizations, and educational administration. In awarding the CEU, administrative and program criteria must be considered. Appropriate use of the CEU is determined by Task Force guidelines. The CEU is a development resulting from the work of a task force appointed by the National Planning Conference on the Feasibility of a Uniform Crediting and Certification System for Continuing Education. Abstract

Recognizing the need for a uniform method of measurement to apply to non-degree adult education programs, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools incorporated the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) for use December 1, 1971. The purpose of this study was to forecast the utilization of the CEU in these programs within the Southern Association by 1980. The Delphi Technique of forecasting was chosen as the study design. Selecting a panel of 50 experts, three rounds of study were conducted using questionnaires and discussion. These results were analyzed to determine the median and interquartile range of the predictions. The study concludes that by 1980, the CEU will have broad acceptance, CEU programs will be of higher quality, the CEU will be used to measure faculty work loads, faculty participation in continuing education programs will be greater, public funding support will increase, State continuing education budgets will be based on CEU enrollment figures, business and professional organizations will help fund and use the CEU for updating and relicensing, and, finally, the number of contracts for non-credit education will increase. Abstract

The article discusses methods of controlling stocks and variety within the manufacturing industry, demonstrating how the costs of excessive variety might be identified and calculated within individual firms. While Great Britain's manufacturing industry is in disagreement over both the degree of variety which exists and the degree of variety which should exist, the author notes that the real goal of marketing is to combine the economics of long production runs with a variety in the final product to satisfy the customer. The larger the average production batch size of an individual line the greater the cost of investing in holding stocks will be. Large production batches also mean that each "stock line' needs to be produced more infrequently per year than would be the case with small batch sizes.

44. Gastric acid secretion in patients with duodenal ulcer treated for one year with anticholinergic drugs.

Abstract

Ninety patients with duodenal ulcer, divided randomly into three groups, were treated continuously for one year with either glycopyrronium, 1-hyoscyamine (as a sustained-release preparation) or inert tablets. Dosage with active tablets was so adjusted that the patient experienced definite but tolerable side-effects. Basal and maximal gastric acid secretion were measured immediately before and one week after cessation of treatment. There was no significant change in the means of these measurements in patients who received placebo or 1-hyoscyamine. In those given glycopyrronium, mean basal output was significantly increased. Mean maximal acid output in this group fell, but not significantly. Individual measurements of maximal acid output showed quite marked fluctuations in all groups. It is concluded that spontaneous changes in parietal cell mass may occur in patients with duodenal ulcer, and that prolonged anticholinergic therapy does not reduce parietal cell mass. Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic inflammation of the lining membrane of the nasal cavities resulting in atrophy of tissues, with occasional corresponding changes in the bony structure, and the formation of crusts. It is frequently accompanied by ozena.While all authorities are practically agreed as to the final sclerosis of the tissues in atrophic rhinitis, there are differences of opinion among observers as to the exact pathologic process by which such a result has been brought about. Is the atrophic condition essentially such from the beginning or is it preceded by hypertrophy? Manifestly, opinion founded upon clinical observation must be surrounded with difficulties.
