Bolted specimens representative of both upper and lower wing surface splices of a transport aircraft were designed and manufactured for static and random load tension and compression fatigue testing including ground-air-ground load reversals. The specimens were fabricated with graphite-epoxy composite material. Multiple tests were conducted at various load levels and the results were used as input to a statistical wearout model. The statically designed specimens performed very well under highly magnified fatigue loadings. Two large panels, one tension and compression, were fabricated for testing by NASA-LRC.

The design, fabrication, static test, and fatigue test of both tension and compression graphite-epoxy candidates for a wing splice representative of a next-generation transport aircraft was the objective of the reported research program. A single-scarf bolted joint was selected as the design concept. Test specimens were designed and fabricated to represent an upper-surface and a lower-surface panel containing the splice. The load spectrum was a flight-by-flight random-load history including ground-air-ground loads. The results of the fatigue testing indicate that, for this type of joint, the inherent fatigue resistance of the laminate is reflected in the joint behavior and, consequently, the rate of damage accumulation is very slow under realistic fatigue loadings.

Acoustic results of jet noise tests conducted on scale-model nozzles at a wall isolation facility are presented and analyzed. The test fixture featured a triple-flow system for the purpose of simulating freestream flow around hot dual-flow jet nozzles. Test nozzles included 1/20th scale models of the exhaust system for the JT8D-9 engine, power plant for the Boeing 727 airplane (bypass ratio 1) and of the JT8D-109 refan engine (bypass ratio 2). It was found that overall jet noise is reduced by the forward velocity in proportion to the fifth and sixth power of the relative primary jet velocity. Spectral and directivity characteristics are presented.

The results are presented of static scale model acoustic tests of the nozzle system for the JT8D-9 baseline engine and candidate nozzle systems for JT8D-109, JT8D-115, and JT8D-117 refan engines. The objective of these tests was to determine the jet noise benefit of the three refan engine cycles relative to the baseline JT8D-9, and to provide acoustic information toward selection of the optimum primary-secondary area match and centerbody contour for the refan engine cycles. One of the nozzle configurations was tested with and without simulated turbine exit swirl to determine what effect, if any, swirl has no jet noise. The JT8D-109 cycle was found to afford approximately 9 db (0ASPL) jet noise reduction relative to the JT8D-9 when compared on an equal static thrust basis. The JT8D-115 and JT8D-117 afford an 8 db and 6 db reduction, respectively, relative to the JT8D-9, at equal static thrust. Turbine exit swirl was found to have no significant effect on the jet noise of the JT8D-109 nozzle system.

The use of satellite-based, world-wide data collection and location systems for scientific purposes is discussed. The configuration of satellite borne data handling equipment to prevent premature saturation and to provide maximum capacity without degradation of performance is described. An analysis of a data collection and location system based on random time and frequency access to the satellite was conducted. The subjects presented are: (1) a general description of the concept of a random access system, (2) the quantitative characteristics of random access systems, and (3) the development of a model for comparing the various types of digital communications systems.

The characteristics of a star field attitude sensor for use with the Pioneer Venus spacecraft are presented. The aspects of technical feasibility, system interface considerations, and cost of flight hardware development are discussed. The tradeoffs which relate to performance, design, cost, and reliability are analyzed. The configuration of the system for installation in the spacecraft is described.

Helicopter crew and passenger vibration sensitivity are presented. Pilot subjective ratings are established for discrete frequencies and the impact of combinations of harmonic frequencies is examined. A passenger long term comfort level and a short term limit are defined for discrete frequencies and compared with pilot ratings. The results show reasonable agreement between pilot and passenger. Subjective comfort levels obtained for mixed frequency environments clearly demonstrate the need for a multi-frequency criterion.

A series of tests to evaluate, at L-band, the ranging, voice, and data communications concepts proposed for the air traffic control experiment of the Applications Technology Satellite-F are described. The ground station facilities, balloon platforms and the aircraft were supplied by the European Space Research Organization. One ground simulation and two aircraft flights at low elevation angles were conducted. Even under high interference conditions good performance was obtained for both voice communications and side tone ranging. High bit errors occurred in the data channels resulting in false commands. As a result of the experience gained in operating the equipment in an aircraft environment several recommendations were made for improving the equipment performance.
