Abstract

The article presents a response to the articles, "Financing the Rebuilding of Our Cities," by Louis Winnick, and "Public Costs of Urban Renewal," by Robert Moore Fisher, which appeared in this issue. The author questions Winnick's assertion that the best use of urban land should be for new construction for public service institutions as opposed to the renovation of residential properties. The author also explores Fisher's idea that the use of funds in any given urban area could inadvertently speed the deterioration of other urban areas that do not receive such improvement grants and aid.

Abstract

Mortality in epiglottitis was compared in two groups of patients. There was no mortality in a small group of patients who were tracheotomized electively, whereas patients who were observed and tracheotomized on clinical indication had a 25% mortality or near mortality. It is suggested that elective tracheostomy, performed in patients with the confirmed diagnosis of epiglottitis, may protect them from the unpredictability of this disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Streptococcal pharyngitis cannot always be recognized clinically. If the significant morbidity from rheumatic fever is to be reduced, throat cultures must be used to accurately diagnose streptococcal infections. Medium density polyethylene vials have been compared to glass vials for use in liquid scintillation counting. Lower backgrounds and increased efficiencies were observed with plastic vials. Glass is superior for storage and heating of samples.

Abstract

1. The reactions of 2-thiocyanatoethoxytrimethylsilane with the acid chlorides of halocarboxylic acids and tetracoordinated phosphorus acids proceed according to equilibrium reactions, with the formation of the 2-thiocyanato esters of the corresponding acids. 2. The equilibrium of the reaction is shifted to the right more strongly the more polar and polarizable the bond between the chlorine atom and the carbonyl carbon in the case of the halocarboxylic acids, and the greater the ability of the phosphorus atoms to form an additional bond via the d-orbitals.

A comparison of two groups of patients with acute laryngotracheo bronchitis, hospitalized before and after initiation of an educational program in infectious diseases, demonstrated no differences in severity or prognosis despite significant reduction in antirnicrobial usage. These observations show how a "scientific" approach to management of an infectious disease may reduce unnecessary and potentially harmful antimicrobial therapy.

Abstract

Over the past 31/2 years we have used naloxone, a nonaddicting narcotic antagonist, as an adjunct in the treatment of 176 young heroin abusers in a highly structured day program. The current status of these 176 is as follows: 39% apparently are drug free (excluding alcohol and marihuana); 21% are in treatment programs; 21% are in prison, deceased, or lost to follow-up; and 1% are using illegal drugs. Naloxone was well tolerated by the abusers and was considered a valuable aid in the therapy of this difficult age group. The importance of the structure of the program itself in the treatment of the abuser is stressed.
