Atmospheric waterdrop size distribution was measured by a laser fog nephelometer at Capistrano Test Site, California, from 16 April through 11 May 1974. Liquid water content, extinction coefficient, and visibility were calculated from the data obtained. The nephelometer data were collected from sunset to sunrise nightly for 25 consecutive nights. Fog conditions were recorded on 4 of these nights. A time format of 5-minute samples separated by 5-minute pauses was used. The data are presented in tabular form referenced to channel number (i.e., nominal radius). For comparison, the 64 channels of data were treated in four groups of 16 channels each as well as one group of 64 channels. This volume contains general narrative and background. Volume II contains tabularized data for CTS-1 through CTS-5, Volume III for CTS-6 through 10, Volume IV for CTS-11 through 15, Volume V for CTS-16 through 20, and Volume VI for CTS-21 through 25. Accurate estimates of Cartesian coordinates of the existing range instrumentation systems depend on such factors as target position, number of instruments, location of instruments, and instrument accuracy. This report analyses the problem of instrument location when the station configuration is asymmetrical. This is an extension of a previous investigation and covers a more general class of problems. This study has shown that, for angle measuring devices, the error estimate is functionally related to the azimuth reference used when the station locations are asymmetrical. Expressions are developed for several classes of site geometries. Optimal site geometries have been identified within a certain class of site geometries. (Author)

The report is designed to provide a guide to the occurrence of atmospheric dust over selected geographical areas for assessing the potential impact of naturally occurring atmospheric dust on military operations or systems. Tabularized data on the diurnal variation of the occurrence by month and on the duration factor for selected time periods throughout a year for blowing dust (visibility less than 11 km) and of dust storms (visibility less than 1 km) for 18 stations in the Middle East, 72 stations in the Near East, and 45 stations in North Africa are presented. Surface based temperature inversion data were extracted from daily radiosonde observations (RAOB) at White Sands Desert (WSD) and Holloman (HMS) Raob sites on the White Sands Missile Range. The total number of observations, the percent of observations with surface based inversions, the average temperature at the top and at the base of the inversion, the average temperature change the inversion, the extreme temperature change through the inversion, the average depth of the inversion in presure and geometric height units, and the standard deviations of the average temperature and heights of the inversions were compiled and presented in both tabular and graphical form. Discussion of the monthly variations in the surface inversion along with a closer look at the diurnal change of the surface inversion is presented.

Maximum sound pressure levels averaging 115 decibels, with extreme values of 90 and 128 decibels, were measured about one mile behind the Nike Zeus Missile Launcher for the variety of meteorological conditions occurring during four monthly tests.Additional small samples of data taken both near the launcher and at two miles distnce from the sound source suggest a 20-decibel decline in peak noise level per mile. The decay of the noise level following peak was between two and three decibels per second for the first ten seconds. A frequency analysis of the sound level measured at launch indicates that frequencies below 125 cps are predominant. Under mos meteorological conditions, the sound pressure levels at one mile behind the launcher would not be great enough to cause any structural damage or personnel injury. The levels would be above 90 decibels however, which approach the level at which complaints of annoyance become frequent. (Author)

System design outlines are presented for measurement of aerodynamic parameters in a wind tunnel. Pressure measurements are obtained by an electromanometer system with readout for twelve sensing stations. Velocity is determined by pitot tube and hot wire devices. Models may be mounted in three modes on a sting and sector system for experimental runs. Vibration sensors and dynamic response simulation are available. Temperature gradients are determined by a nine-element thermocouple array. Provisions are made for a digital data acquisition system and visual analog display. (Author)

A technique for determining the impact point of missiles by the detection of the shock wave generated during a missile's descent was developed. This technique, including the instrumentation and computations involved and an error analysis, is presented. (Author)

The wide band spectrum surveillance system is under development to provide a monitor system capable of simultaneously observing large portions of the frequency spectrum. The purpose of the system is to determine the presence of intermittent, spurious and short duration signals and to provide a simple and direct method of signal analysis for rapid identification. The prototype model has a frequency range of 160-1100 Mc and is to be extended to 12,000 mc. (Author)

The equations of motion which describe the position in space, the pitch, yaw, and roll of an unguided rocket are developed. Some effects considered are those of gravity, thrust, spin rockets, canted fins, aerodynamic forces and moments, loss of mass, rotation of the earth, wind, variable speed of sound, and variable atmospheric pressure. The vector forces and moments are defined and resolved into suitable components from which the equations of motion are derived. The problem of numerical integration of these equations is discussed. How perturbation techniques can be used to increase the computation speed is shown. Applications of the resulting mathematical models including prediction of the impact point for real-time support of an actual firing are explained. (Author)

Aerobee NB3.104 (NRL-71) was launched by Naval Ordnance Missile Test Facility personnel, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Meteorological data used in conjunction with theoretical calculations to predict rocket impact are presented. Wind data for the first 2,000 feet above the surface were obtained from a Double-Theodolite Wind Velocity Computer System. Temperature, pressure, and humidity data, along with upper wi d data from 2,000 to approximately 100,000 feet above the surface, were obtained from standard rawinsonde operations. Mean wind component values in each ballistic zone were determined from vertical cross sections by the equal-area method. (Author)

High and low temperature reliability tests were conducted on the Pershing missile 309, in the environmental test chamber to determine the system's reliability, ruggedness, and related human factors during conditions of high and low temperature extremes. The Pershing missile 309 consisted of an inert warhead, guidance and control unit, and dummy first and second stage motors; elevating launcher, including the cable mast; and a set of electrical blankets for the missile. Malfunctions of the warhead fuze during extreme phases of temperature testing proved it unacceptable. Oil pressure on two hydropacks dropped during the low temperature cycles on one hydropack froze, rendering it inoperable. Equipment became too hot to handle comfortably without protective clothing during checkout procedures at high temperatures. During low-temperature test, the warhead section drained off heat generated by blankets covering the guidance and control section, thereby causing the guidance and control compartment to drop below operation temperature. It was recommended that studies be continued on warhead fuze operation at extreme temperatures.

Drop tests were performed at -65 F and at ambient temperature on a standard Little John motor container in which was enclosed an inert Phase II Littlejohn rocket motor XM-26 E1. Instrumentation as used to record impact acceleration sustained by the motor and container during the tests. The tests resulted in shearing the rubber shock absorber, shearing the saddle bolts, and fracturing one of the inner steel supports. The rubber shock absorbers system (mounting, bolts, and rubber absorbers) is inadequate. The large number of lid bolts is not necessary. (Author)

The spectrum utilization characteristics of the UED Telemetry Transmitter Model TR-10 w/Ark Electronics RF Filter, Model TM-2S and UED Power Line Filter (no model no.), were determined to facilitate the assignment of frequency on an interference-free basis. Operational characteristics such as frequency stability, power output and modulation characteristics were empirically examined against the parameters of operating time and supply voltage variations. Interference characteristics (spurious emanations) antenna conducted, radiated and power line conducted, were also examined. It is recommended that the UED Telemetry Transmitter w/Ark Electronics RF Filter Model TM-2S and UED Power Line Filter be authorized for operational use at White Sands Missile Range. (Author)

The two purposes of the research are to give a better mathematical description of lens design problems near a solution and to make a contribution to the problem of global optimization in lens design. Orthogonal transformations derived by solving eigenvalue problems in two vector spaces, the space of lens construction variables and the space of image defects, have been used to simplify the problem so that the effects of nonlinearity could be more easily studied. The most important nonlinear effects have been deduced and implications of these effects for two important algorithms, Damped Least Squares and Grey's orthonormalization method, have been worked out. The nonlinear structure of the lens design problem is such that Damped Least Squares is subject to serious stagnation phenomena. Grey's method is superior in this respect. A different approach to handling nonlinearity has been developed, and an algorithm which embodies this approach is described. (Author), Doctoral thesis.

This memorandum documents the development of a cost/effectiveness (C/E) descriptor tree which was developed in support of Operational Tests 1 planning for Device 16A3, Combined Arms Tactical Training Simulator (CATTS). The C/E tree was developed as part of a planned SAFSEA six man-month technical assistance effort to the CATTS Program Director. A C/E tree is a variant of performance descriptor hierarchy methodology in which a taxonomy of measurable system elements is developed down to measurable data elements. A performance descriptor hierarchy considers only system performance elements while a C/E tree considers both performance and cost elements (similar to a Value Model). The 'tree' is designed and constructed to be used as a system evaluation tool. It is an effective evaluation tool because it provides a framework for structuring an evaluation methodology.

The document has been prepared as a procedure for evaluating angle encoders. It outlines the processes to be performed under controlled environmental laboratory conditions for precise quantitative measurement of the performance of the angle encoder under test. It is not intended for use in quality control checks to determine the ability of encoders to meet manufacturing specifications.
