1. Creative Literature in Canada Symposium.

The contents of this booklet were presented at a symposium on Canadian creative literature at the University of Toronto in March 1974. 5. Dream Logs: Dreams as a Creative Force in Freshman Composition and the Arts.

The keeping of a dream log can spark the imagination in freshman composition courses, giving students opportunities to be both creative artists and critics. With the emphasis more on using dreams than on interpreting them, students are free to explore the symbols and relevance of their dreams when creating written or musical compositions, films, paintings, sculptures, or photographic displays. Four major methods of interpretation--Freudian, Jungian, mystical or prophetic, and Gestalt--supply reference sources, while fiction, musical compositions, and various slides of art and photography provide examples of dream inspired creations. 6. Black Literature vs. Black Studies: Three Lynchings.

Abstract

When studying Afro-American literature, even in an English class rather than Black Studies class, both student interest and the topic tend to lead discussion toward sociological, not literary, aspects. However, the teacher should emphasize repeatedly the aesthetic dimensions of an artistic work as well as the various literary forms in which a social event or problem may be expressed. As an example, this paper discusses three different treatments of lynchings. In one, Leslie Pinckney Hill presents a restrained, quiet attack on the corruption represented by such murder in the form of a traditional Italian sonnet. In another, Claude McKay, also writing in formal sonnet form, and prophesying a bleak future, raises questions of irony and paradox in his poetic creation. Richard Wright dramatizes the violent act in a short story, allowing the reader to sense the scene by limiting what he reveals. Literary study should never stress subject matter at the expense of literary manner. (JM)

7. A Sioux Poem of Power.

Abstract

An assessment of Black Elk's poetry reveals that Indians' attitudes toward words differ from ours. For example, on certain occasions Indian songs become instruments which bring an influx of energy into a whole society or draw rain or heal sickness. Words which recreate or conjure the agents of the poet's vision are relevant because they uplift the quality of living. Black Elk believes that words "give away his vision," but they are practical because they contain power or influence. Words also have energy and direction, and when they are received in visions as songs, hymns, invocations, prophecies, or conjurations, they are spoken of as "Voices Sent." An unexpressed power, or "The Compelling Fear," motivates Black Elk to perform the Horse Dance ceremony, which consists of vision songs and the conveyance of the content of the vision. Indian poetry is brief and it reveals that colors, lightning, and the sunset are signs of the power of the west. The purpose of the Indian song is to transmit the affective situations of the vision to the beholders of the ceremony, so that they may profit from it psychologically, medically, and practically. 10. A Student Oriented Approach to Teaching Poetry.

Abstract

To help high school students find enjoyment and intellectual stimulation in poetry, an English teacher may use several techniques. First, the course may be introduced by stating objectives and procedures, and by asking students for ideas about the value of reading and studying poetry. The teacher should involve all students, especially the reluctant ones, by making a large number of poetry collections available to students and having them browse until they find poems that they like. Then each student may make a copy of his or her poem and prepare to read it aloud the next day in class. The teacher may read for the reluctant students, arrange chairs in a circle for intimacy, and encourage students to tell why they liked a poem. Some poems selected may be used to provoke excellent discussion and writing assignments. This last procedure enables students to learn the usual things teachers teach about poetry, such as terminology, symbols, and types of poetry, while at the same time providing enjoyment for the student. An individual activity accompanies each rhyme. The workbook is designed to strengthen the child's knowledge of his environment and his language by emphasizing and basing the lesson on ideas that interest him and activities corresponding to his aptitudes. The book is fully illustrated, and learning activities include questions and answers, follow-the-dots, solving picture puzzles, coloring and drawing. The treatment used involves reading poetry, listening to recordings, studying poets, and writing poetry. The patients' choice of poems is not restricted by the staff, but different types of poetry appeal to different types of patients. The flexibility of poetry therapy has been found advantageous as a treatment modality in psychiatric nursing. (Author/PF)

14. Teaching Pop Songs: Reflections and Recommendations.

Abstract

This paper presents a rationale for using popular music in the classroom and provides suggestions for teaching popular music lyrics in the poetry class. The question of whether pop music is an end in itself or a means to understanding traditional literature is also addressed. It is suggested that the teaching of the poetry of rock can be accomplished without neglecting the poetry of poetry, and that teachers can move from pop music to profound music without leaving a negative impression of pop art forms. Suggestions for instructional materials are included and several different approaches to teaching pop music lyrics are presented. (RB)

16. The Problems of Translation.

Abstract

The problems confronting the translator of American Indian literature are immense. The history of European Indian relations has obscured many original Indian values and attitudes and has substituted a set of simplistic and unreal Anglo attitudes that translators must transcend. Unlike most Western literature, Indian literature does not instruct, but instead celebrates and invokes. In searching for the essence of a piece, the translator must choose between satisfying the requirement to preserve the literal content of the work and satisfying the requirement that the translation convey the spirit of the original. Translation of native American literature usually requires either a native sensitivity to the work or the aid of a native informant. Indian poetry is typically spare and even the lengthy and complex Navajo chantways abound with rarified and elusive symbolism which seems to defy elegant translation. Compounding the semantic problems is the fact that most Indian literature has an intimate place in a large context of ceremony that cannot be reproduced in print at all. The inflections of song and the rhythms of drum and dance are impossible to replicate and usually lead translators to radically alter the form and even content of the Indian originals. (TS)

This paper describes Rod McKuen's theories of poetic composition, arguing that McKuen appeals to the anti-intellectual, blindly sentimental capacities of the American public. A comparison of McKuen's work with the work of such poets as James Dickey, Robert Lowell, and Theodore Roethke is outlined in order to demonstrate to students the superficial aspects of McKuen's poetry. 20. Poetry Therapy.

Abstract

Poetry therapy is the method of therapy based on the principle that a poem is a special medium for expressing emotions and that this expression can have psychotherapeutic value. A survey taken in 1973 showed there were over 400 therapists treating 3,500 drug addicts, alcoholics, and mental retardates around the country. Poetry therapists discourage their pupils from overconcern with stylistics which engender a sense of artificial double think; they make great use of the fact that we are symbolic beings, capable of emotionally understanding far more than words alone can communicate. At present, there are four ways to run a therapy session: (1) provide group members with varied poetry selections to read and respond to, (2) provide members with poems of a similar mood or topic, (3) have members write poetry round robin style, and (4) have members write and react to each other's work of original poetry written during the session. Poetry therapy can also be used in the English program classroom as a way to reach disadvantaged students, as a means of promoting a better communication between upper grade students and lower grade students, as an extracurricular activity, and as an extremely humanistic method of getting into the study of poetry. This third edition of a bibliography originally published in 1963 under the title "Puerto Rico" is a selected list of significant materials in both Spanish and English. The title of this new edition, "Borinquen," is the Spanish form of the original Indian name of the island which was later called Puerto Rico. The contents are organized into nine sections: General Works, History, Social Sciences, Language, The Arts, Biography, Films, Records, and Literature. The latter section is subdivided into four parts: General Works, Fiction, Poetry, and Theatre. Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to expand the conceptual content of folkloric performance as a communicative phenomenon, as spoken art. Performance is seen as representing an interpretive frame, whose nature may vary. This framing is accomplished through the use of culturally conventionalized metacommunication (communication about communication), which will vary from community to community; the task of ethnography of performance is to uncover these means. The metalanguage employed in the evaluation of performance, and the esthetic standards expressed therein, constitute another essential consideration in the ethnography of performance. The association of performance with particular genres is a significant aspect of the patterning of performance within communities. Another key aspect of performance systems is the manipulation of conventional systems to fashion novel ones. The emergent quality of performance resides in the interplay between communicative resources, individual competence, and the goals of the participants, within the context of particular situations. The three kinds of structure emergent in performance are text, event, and social structure. Finally, performance by its very nature has implications for the creation of social structure in performance. This final consideration opens the way to additional considerations concerning the role of the performer in society. (Author/AM)

31. Cross Cultural Communication through Literature: An Analysis of the Response of Foreign Students to 'An Introduction to English Literature,' a University General Education Course. CATESOL Occasional Papers, No. 1.

Abstract

This paper describes the use of literature in an English as a second language course, and the response of foreign students to such a procedure. The responses of 113 students from 20 different countries, speaking twenty-four languages, were compared with those of thirty-five American students having English as their first language. The course consisted of readings in poetry, drama, and short stories, accompanied by discussion and written analyses. Reading selections were from the recent past, so that they would be modern in language and content and related to current life, and yet far enough removed to be seen as a pattern and examined as such. Both multiple choice tests and essays were used for evaluation purposes. Tapes and films were also used to supplement instruction. It was found that students enjoyed the course and felt stimulated to read more. Students suggested having more discussion and student participation in the choice of test materials. Test scores indicated that reasoning and writing in English were the most difficult tasks encountered by non-native speakers. Scores also pointed to the relative importance of a given literary form in a given culture. (CLK)

This pamphlet includes a variety of suggestions and activities to stimulate language and thereby increase students' control over their environment and their lives. Although many of these activities can be used with elementary students, the emphasis in this collection is on language stimulation among secondary school children. As objectives for this secondary level unit, students are to: (1) read the unit with comprehension; (2) demonstrate their comprehension of the Chicana's history by participating in an oral discussion utilizing four discussion questions; and (3) correctly answer 15 of the 20 questions on a multiple choice test. The unit consists of a brief history of the Chicana, discussions of past and present Chicanas, the four discussion questions, the multiple choice test, suggested activities, and eight poems and songs. 37. A Series of Experiments Concerning the Relationship between Learning and the Structural Importance of Linguistic Subunits. Final Report.

Abstract

A series of seven experiments provided information on the relationship between the learning of prose and the structural importance of the linguistic subunits. Five samples of prose, including narrative folktales and two samples of textual prose, were studied to determine whether the patterning of learning corresponded to the structural importance of the respective verbal units. In this series, an objective method was devised for dividing complex verbal materials into linguistic subunits possessing psychological significance. The learners in Experiments I and II attempted a single verbatim reproduction of a narrative folktale either immediately after reading the folktale or after a seven-day retention interval. Two textual selections were studied in Experiments III and IV and their structural importance rated. Experiment V was conducted to determine whether the relationship between structural importance and recall resulted from learners adopting a learning strategy in which more learning time was allocated to more important units. In Experiments VI and VII, a determination was made of the role of structural importance in the serial learning of linguistic subunits. From a methodological viewpoint, two of the techniques used possess the potential of having wide applicability to the analysis of text. These are: (1) the technique of segmenting prose according to locations of pausal acceptability, and (2) the technique whereby linguistic subunits within a prose passage may be hierarchically ordered. 43. Children's Writing.

Abstract

The proper approach to children's writing from an educational point of view is discussed. The point is made that there is something fundamentally wrong with the current approach in children's writing. Current books on children's writing deal only with children's writing. It is recommended that any program which aims to be efficient in the teaching of children's writing should incorporate and exercise as part of its methodology those modes of writing which are appropriate to life outside the school. The kinds of change recommended for children's writing education are those which would instill in a child: (1) a deeper awareness and understanding of himself, (2) a wider and deeper sympathetic understanding of others, (3) a fuller understanding of his own position in time and space, (4) a fuller awareness and understanding of the living (non-human) world, (5) a more highly developed and refined aesthetic awareness, and (6) the ability to express these appropriately. Illustrations of writing which portray some of these qualities are given. Different types of writing are also discussed. These include personal, impersonal, and imaginative. (CK)

Abstract

The social studies curriculum guide for kindergarteners is based upon the idea that thinking is sequentially learned and developed. The aim of the program is to help children develop the tools of reasoning. Emphasis is on the introduction of cognitive tasks involving concept formation and requiring students to list, group, identify, and label items; interpret, infer and generalize; apply known principles and facts to unfamiliar phenomena; and to predict consequences from known conditions. Each of the cognitive tasks is explained in greater detail in relation to overt activity, covert mental operations, and eliciting of questions. Six units of varying length which involve more than several days are presented. It is recommended that the units gradually move toward greater depth and longer duration and that by the end of the year the units will involve children for several weeks. Seasonal units are presented to help the children document and generalize the concept that change is constant in the world. A unit on "Me, Myself and I" helps children to see themselves realistically. Two family units, one on "The Family" and another on the "Japanese Family", are presented to illustrate similarities and differences in families. Additional materials for each unit include general reference books, fingerplays, and poetry. (Author/SJM)
