CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AND PRODUCTIVE CONFERENCE INTERACTION BETWEEN STATE SUPERVISORS OF MUSIC AND DELEGATES FROM STATES WITHOUT A STATE SUPERVISOR WERE REPORTED. FOR THE STATE SUPERVISORS, THERE WERE CONFERENCE SESSIONS DEVOTED TO "IMPROVING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE OFFICE OF STATE MUSIC SUPERVISOR." SUGGESTIONS WERE ALSO OFFERED TO DELEGATES FROM STATES WITHOUT A STATE MUSIC SUPERVISOR. THERE WERE JOINT MEETINGS TO DELINEATE SOME OF THE NEWER CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENTS IN MUSIC. FINALLY, RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES OF GENERAL AND SPECIFIC NATURES WERE RELATED. (GC)

The purpose of this course of study is to serve as a guide for providing newly employed vocational rehabilitation agency personnel with educational experiences that better prepare the trainees to serve themselves, their clients, their agency, and their community. The course reflects the belief that generic educational material and experiences are necessary for newly employed rehabilitation personnel; and that race flexibility in coverage is maintained to insure the program staff the opportunities to respond to trainees' requests and needs. The training process itself attempts to integrate those elements considered most conducive to effective learning: (1) provide identification models for effective functioning through the interactional process with the program staff; (2) provide the conditions or atmosphere that will afford the trainee an experiential base calculated to enhance self-development and understanding; and (3) to provide that which is taught and reinforced didactically attempts to influence trainee behaviors and attitudes. Career education concepts are all closely linked to the occupational cluster, which has become the basic element in career education curriculum development and programing. Procedures for preparing a cluster-based occupational curriculum are presented, including the collection of manpower data and occupational selection. Other components of the model include: (1) describing selected occupations and clustering these occupations by commonality of job tasks, (2) analyzing the instructional components of each instructional task to provide the teacher with a "task module" for teaching each identified skill, (3) skill transferability, which is demonstrated by cluster commonality analysis with career ladder sequencing of tasks, (4) pre-assessment of students, (5) individualized instruction, and (6) multimedia instructional materials. This project studied the effectiveness of an evaluation and prevocational conditioning course for young adult mentally retarded females. A group of 171 women aged 16 to 21, with IQ's in the 50 to 75 range, were housed in a multiple disability center. The eight-week program centered around activities related to domestic and homemaking employment, including instruction in daily living, domestic arts, and productive work activities. Directed toward enabling the women served to obtain employment, the project involved: (1) casefinding; (2) pre-admission processing; (3) evaluation and a course in prevocational conditioning; (4) followup services; (5) research and program development; (6) public relations; (7) staff development; and (8) advice and consultation. Twenty-five per cent of the women withdrew prior to completion of the course. Data on 59 rehabilitated clients show 41 per cent placed in the competitive labor market and 59 per cent placed as homemakers or unpaid family workers. The number of clients successfully served and rehabilitated through this project indicates a more hopeful picture for clients previously considered incapable of rehabilitation. (Author/LAA)

The Phelps-Stokes Fund and Title III of the Higher Education Act have jointly supported the Cooperative College Development Program (CCDP) in which 70 institutions were participating by the end of 1969. One of the major purposes of the program is to train college administrators and trustees in the art of effective fund raising. More generally, CCDP has concentrated on the development concept and its implications for management and teamwork. This report presents: a brief analysis of the difficulties of institutionalizing this development concept; and a summary of program activities which included (1) training sessions for presidents, trustees and development officers, (2) field follow-up by CCDP staff, (3) a training session for new institutions to give them a "head start" in anticipation of membership in CCDP, (4) an attempt to analyze the success of CCDP efforts systematically, and (5) efforts to develop a more accurate composite profile of the entire CCDP membership. It also describes the establishment of a Development Laboratory, equipped to demonstrate how filing, mailing, and duplicating equipment can be used for development functions, and to illustrate the efficiency of a coordinated system. Information on CCDP's personnel and on grants received by some of the participating institutions is also included. (AF)

The purpose of this conference was to consider ways of developing a system of improved information services for the mathematical sciences and for the interfaces with related scientific fields. Conference memebrs investigated the achievements, coverage, and technology of existing information services and systems in the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, computing and control, and statistics, as well as mathematics and mathematics education. Descriptions of the current status and developmental plans of various information systems are provided by scientists involved in these systems. Possible compatibilities of the classification schemes and data bases of each system with other systems were explored, as were the economic and management concerns of the several systems. These discussions were related with respect to their implications for a national information system for the mathematics sciences. (Author/FL)

Thirty-two states, plus Guam, were represented at the Seminar in State Music Supervision, held Jan. 24 through 26 at New York University. Position papers were presented on state arts councils movements, the relationship between state music supervisors and chief state school officers, computer applications to music education, and general factors of Title I of ESEA. Other papers dealt with the responsibilities of state music supervisors, the changing patterns and concepts of certification, and the effect of mass media on culture. Reports on Title I and Title III ESEA music projects were given. Discussions were held on (1) the manner in which changing philosophies of state departments of education affect the responsibilities of their personnel, (2) the increasing attention being paid to required secondary school music, and (3) the advancement of computer science technology over the musician's present ability to use it efficiently. All of these factors are related to the dichotomy between the creative artist and the teacher, the need for more state education department music personnel, and the trend toward having music taught by specialists. An 8-week residential evaluation and prevocational training program for retarded females (ages 16 to 21, IQ's 50 to 75) at a multiple disability rehabilitation center is described. The project plan is outlined as to purpose, application procedure, admission criteria, advice and consultation, facilities and equipment, and functions of the project staff. Data on the project program treat evaluation, personal and social adjustment, evaluative criteria, utilization of volunteers and students, and views of the social worker and the medical consultant towards the program. The 171 clients are described by referral sources, prevalence of secondary disabilities, geographic distribution, clinic factors, psychometric data, socioeconomic factors (family), disposition of project cases, and cost. The discussion of work placement success includes characteristics of 59 rehabilitated clients, factors related to work placement success, psychometric data, adjustment, and other data. Case summaries and the counselor's opinion of project services are presented. Employer attitudes toward the mentally retarded are explained in terms of scoring procedure, comparison of group responses, and personal factors related to total attitude mean score. (JD)
