PHASE shifters , *ELECTRONIC modulators - Abstract
The conditions required to make a two-branch modulator-phase-shifter combination capable of a single-sideband output are reviewed, and it is shown that they are of the same form as can be deduced for a circuit with an arbitrary arrangement of modulators and phase shifters.
In communication systems it is often necessary to change the frequency of an information-bearing carrier wave, and to do this some form of single-sideband modulator is required. Often the second sideband naturally produced by the modulation process selected to change the frequency can be removed by the use of a filter, but in certain applications this is difficult or impossible, and for many years there has been interest in circuits which only produce one sideband, in other words, directly change the frequency of the incoming waveform (Saraga and Houselander 1970).
