The review deals with the literature and patent publications on the polymerisation of olefinic hydrocarbons and some of their derivatives. The mechanism of the action and the specificity of catalytic systems containing mainly ethers and amines are discussed. A small section dealing with systems based on the ether complexes of aluminium alkyls is included. The bibliography includes 236 references.

CATHERINE AND PETER—contemporaries were already comparing these two names as symbols of two successive eras of Russian cultural history. Contemporaries also realized that the era of Catherine was not only a continuation of Peter’s but also constituted a sharp contrast with it at the same time. They even thought up a vivid metaphor for the contrast, and it became common currency among writers of Catherine’s age: “Peter created Russia’s body, but Catherine endowed it with a soul.”
