Proceedings of a seminar on the present status of vision engineering and the possible effects on criteria for school planning. A discussion by Dr. H. Richard Blackwell on vision engineering is included. Topics of discussion include--(1) broad aspects of the effect of light upon sight, (2) lighting variables and task visibility, (3) lighting variables and direct comfort, and (4) general remarks about illumination standards. Tables on lighting requirements for various tasks, required individual footcandles for No. 2 pencil task, and required weighted footcandles for No. 2 pencil task are included, as well as a paper by Dr. H. Richard Blackwell describing the visual benefits of polarized light. (RH)

Immediate installation of emergency lighting, in addition to that already provided, is recommended for three groups of existing schools--(1) air-conditioned schools and additions with compact plans having inside corridors and instructional areas artifically lighted, (2) senior high schools with adult education programs, and (3) community schools offering instructional programs to all age levels and using elementary, junior and senior high school plants. The need for additional provisions is based on the danger of panic in crowds when power fails due to causes outside of the building such as hurricanes, local storms, seasonal overloads, or national emergencies. Recommendations are given for providing emergency lighting systems independent of public utility service. (RH)

The efficiency, cost and selection of carpet in schools were discussed in some detail, including flammability, maintenance, type and density of fiber, underpad, and methods of installation. The following conclusions were stated--(1) the use of carpet substantially improves the educational environment, and (2) the total cost of carpet, including maintenance, is no more than that of resilient floor finishes. The publication also states that the Dade County Board of Public Instruction will issue a detailed specification of acceptable carpet materials and contruction for the purpose of bidding, purchase and installation. Proceedings of a conference on the present and future uses of computer techniques in the air conditioning field. The recommendation of this report is, for the most part, negative insofar as it applies to the use of computers for design by the small office. However, there should be an awareness of their usefulness in controlling the environmental equipment specified for clients to ensure the most efficient operation. Among the papers presented are--(1) design, operation and programing and digital computers, (2) small engineering firms and the computer, (3) heat gains and losses by digital computers, (4) total energy, and (5) past, present and future of computerized control in office buildings. Introduction2 The use of roentgen rays in the treatment of brain tumors has at one time or another aroused great interest both in the neurosurgeon and radiologist. At various periods more or less hopeful claims have been made for the roentgen therapy of brain tumors. Some have felt that in certain types of tumors this mode of treatment offered a real hope as against surgery. On the whole, however, the general trend has been to use roentgen therapy as an adjunct to surgical treatment, particularly in the case of gliomata which have been found on exposure to be inoperable and inaccessible. Conflicting reports have resulted from this tendency, and we are in more or less of a dilemma concerning the efficacy of the roentgen ray in prolonging the life of individuals with inoperable gliomata. With recent advances in our knowledge of the gliomata and of their varied structure, further opportunity is offered to study the several types of tumors of this sort, in order to determine their sensitivity to roentgen rays. This is all the more important because most of our studies have been confined to a consideration of the clinical improvement following surgery and roentgen therapy without due appraisal of the actual changes to be noted in the irradiated tissue itself, changes which might be attributed to irradiation. We have attempted, therefore, in this study to determine what effects the roentgen rays have upon gliomata of different types, and at the same time to evaluate the changes wrought in the normal brain tissue in irradiated cases.
