The article discusses the biophysical and the biochemical role of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the genetic material deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The first effect discovered was that UVR acts on the cytosine units of DNA in water solution. Studies show that irradiation disrupt hydrogen bonding between strands of natural DNA. A series of experiments regarding the effect of UVR on DNA are discussed. It has been discovered that the effects of UVR on cells and viruses is caused directly by its effects on DNA.
