Four new examples of the XYY karyotype were ascertained in a survey of selected male populations. Among men 183 cm (6 ft) or greater in height, two out of 86 tested in a state prison, one out of 76 tested in a mental hospital, and none in 30 normal men were found to be XYY. One 11-year-old boy was also found among a group of 57 male juvenile offenders not selected for height, referred from a family court clinic. None of the XYY subjects showed significant physical abnormalities other than increased height. All came from broken or unsatisfactory homes, perhaps an important factor in leading to their sociopathic behavior.

Addition of lysergic acid diethylamide to cultured human leukocytes resulted in a marked increase of chromosomal abnormalities. The distribution of chromosome breaks deviated significantly from random, with an accumulation of aberrations in chromosome No. 1. Cytogenetic investigation of a patient extensively treated with this drug over a 4-year period for paranoid schizophrenia showed a similar increase in chromosomal damage.

Cervical collars have been in use for many years. Probably one of the earliest and best-known collars was devised by Hugh Owen Thomas.1 It is generally made of heavy cardboard and sheet cotton. Recently Philip Lewin2 described a wrap-around-type collar that is made of hospital cotton and silkaline. The cervical collar can be used as a first-aid measure or in treatment. It exerts traction and distraction and affords support and immobilization.
