Abstract

Der Verfasser stellt fest, dass von den Arten der Sektion Campylorrhyncha der Gattung Xanthium auf dem Gebeite Rumaniens drei vorhanden sind: X. italicum, X. albinum und X. saccharatum. Die Art Xanthium italicum, vor zehn Jahren nur im Suden des Landes bekannt, ist gegenwartig auf dem ganzen Gebeite Rumaniens verbreitet. Xanthium albinum, bis jetzt unter der Bezeichnunug ,"X. riparium" angefuhrt, verbereitet sich him Norden des Landes (Somes-Au), wurde aber auch in der Dobrudscha gefunden. Die Mehrzahl der vom Verfasser untersuchten Exemplare dieser Arten gehoren der Unterart albinum; bei Ardusat (Kreis Maramures) wurde auch die Unterart riparium aufgetroffen. Die Art Xanthium saccharatum jetzt ist zum ersten Mal auf dem Gebiete Rumaniens aufgefunden; sie verbreite sich neben den obenstehenden Arten in mehreren Standorten auf den Somes-Auen. Das Vorkommen der Arten Xanthium orientale auf dem Gebeite Rumaniens ist gegenwartig nicht erwiesen, uberigens wurde sie im Band IX. "flora R. S. Romania" nur mit dem Fragezeichen aufgezeichnet worden.

Im Rahmene der Pflanzengesellschaft kann ein starker antropogener Einfluss beobachtet warden, der durch die verh�ltnism�ssig grosse Zahl der Kennarten der Klasse Molinio-Arrhenatheretea und Plantaginetea majoris hervorgehoben wird.

In complement of their paper about the morphology of weed seedlings geminated from seeds (Acta Agron. acada.Sci. Hung., Tom. XVIII, 1969, pp.1-47) in this note the authors presents the results of comparative morphological studies on perennial segetal weeds sprouted from subterranean organs. The verified distinctive characteristics are included in an analitical key which allow the identification of 72 weed species (3 Pteridophytae, 17 Monocotyledoneae, 52 Dicotyledoneae) recurrent on the ploughed fields in Romania.

Članek obravnava dve steli iz belega m arm orja, najdeni ob limesu, ki s svojo tem o upodobitve in z um etniška izvedbo p rek ašata druge nagrobnike iz kam noseških delavnic v donavskem prostoru. N ajdišče prve je Bâcsa. Kot pove napis, je dal nagrobnik postaviti neki librarius alae Contariorum (ki je v teku 2. stoletja garnizirala v A rraboni) svojemu tovarišu v konjeniških oddelkih, ki je bil dom a iz Siska. Po im enih pokojnih lahko sklepamo, da je bila stela izdelana na koncu 2. oziroma v začetku 3. stoletja. Drugi spom enik je leta 1961 pridobil M osonm agyarôvâr H ansâg-m uzej. Stilno sorodnost obeh stel poleg oblike kaže tudi v ornam entiko vključeni živalski friz. Večino stel z živalskim frizom lahko d a ­ tiram o v 1. polovico 2. stoletja, k tem lahko prištejem o sedaj tudi stelo iz M osonm agyarôvâr j a. Tip p a je živel dalje v prvi polovici 3. stoletja. Stelo iz k raja Bâcsa smemo torej u v rstiti v poznejšo grupo. Na ta način upodobljena venatio se zelo pogosto pojavlja v noriško-panonskem m ejnem področju. V isto skupino uvršča steli iz Bâcse in Mosonszentjânosa tudi motiv grifa, ki se pojavlja na obeh. Na zatrepu nagrobnika iz Bâcse upodobljeni panter, ki jé iz posode s sadjem , se često pojavlja m ed m otivi upodobljenim i na spomenikih iz Savarije. Zatrep stele iz M osonszentjânosa je bil predelan. N a sredini je upodobljeno do[1]prsje um rlega. Predelava je možna še koncem 1. ali v začetku 2. stoletja. Oba nagrobnika sta bila •— čeprav v različnem času — izdelana v isti delavnici. A naliza kompozicije in podrobnosti nas vodi k sklepu, da moramo iskati skupno delavnico nekje v noriško-panonskem obm ejnem področju, predvsem pač v k rajih blizu Italije. Motivi kažejo na to, da je steli izdelala delavnica v P oeto[1]vioni ali Savariji. Te delavnice so oskrbovale precej veliko področje. N jihov velik pomen izpričuje razen razširjenosti izdelkov tudi vsebina napisov. Da so izdelki iz razm erom a zelo oddaljenih centrov prišli v okolico A rrabone, to je v zahodno-panonski predel lim esa, si lahko razložimo iz m nogostranskih povezav A rrabone z jugozahodno Panonijo, mnogo vojakov iz jugozahodne Panonije je služilo v A rraboni. Teh odnosov ne dokazuje samo epigrafski m aterial, am pak tudi arheološke najdbe. Zelo pom em ben je bil italski vpliv, ki ga je jugozahodna P anonija posredovala A rraboni in ki je bistveno obogatil m aterialno in duhovno kulturo tega področja. Ta vpliv izpričujeta obe steli, ki ju lahko ocenimo in razum em o le kot periferen odsev italske um etnosti.

Abstract

Working definitions of intonation and of the label to be attached to $$ categories were established. The correlations be $$ categories and $$ characteristics were explored for monosyllabic utterances. The relationship between intonation and fundamental frequency was in many cases found to be strong, but often other factors, such as the speech habits of the individual speakers, varied these relationships considerably. Marked similarities between the fundamental frequency and the intensity variations with time were found for many intonation categories; a notable exception was the “high rise” or “question” category. Comparisons of the acoustic characteristics of utterances and of the correct recognition by listeners of the intonation classes showed that fundamental frequency, intensity and duration formed a complex pattern of cues: the fundamental frequency often played the dominant part, but in numerous cases recognition was strongly influenced by other characteristics.

Abstract

This paper describes an investigation of the effect of sound duration on the perception of a linguistic characteristic, the recognition of phonemes. A pair of single syllable words was selected which consisted of identical phoneme sequences, except for the final phoneme which was either the voiced or unvoiced version of the same articulation. Different versions of these words were synthesized with all possible combinations of four different vowel durations and five different final consonant durations. In all cases the sound wave corresponding to the final consonant was inharmonic and identical except for duration. These synthesized words were recorded and presented to a group of 33 listeners who had to judge whether they heard the final consonant as a voiced or as an unvoiced sound. The results clearly show that the relative durations of vowel and final consonant can be used as a cue for hearing the final sound as voiced or unvoiced. This demonstrates that, in certain circumstances, nonspectral characteristics such as duration can serve as the basis for phoneme recognition. It also gives an example of a cue for sound recognition which, due to its relative nature, can be perceived only when it appears in a sequence of phonemes and not when the sound is pronounced in isolation.

20. A Preliminary Investigation of Certain Aspects of Intonation

Abstract

Intonation is the linguistic form in which the speaker organizes certain kinds of information. It is well-known that intonation is related to the fundamental frequency pattern of the speech wave, but it must also be related to changes along other acoustic dimensions because the intonation “tones” are still recognisable in whispered speech. The fundamental frequency, intensity, spectrum and duration changes associated with six intonation “tones” were investigated. The need for further work of this kind was indicated. The relation of acoustic variables and intonation was further investigated by using speech synthesis. Syllables with the same spectrum and intensity were generated in which the fundamental frequencies were controlled by the intensity variations of humanly-produced syllables spoken on six different intonation “tones”. The test established that the synthesized syllables conveyed some of the information about the intonation of the humanly-produced syllables. Methods for carrying out experiments on intonation with phonetically untrained subjects were investigated. The need for further experiments using methods of speech analysis and synthesis along lines indicated is pointed out. The importance for analysis-synthesis telephony of more extensive knowledge about intonation is discussed in some detail.

Abstract

Writing, drawing to verbal instruction and tracing were recorded on a combination of a telescriber with a short-term information store resulting in visual delay. The resulting conflict of visual and kinaesthetic feed-back slowed down performance and resulted in errors such as overshooting, repetition and wrong spacing. Measurable effects such as the duration of writing and the error area in tracing could be shown over the observed range to increase with the amount of delay. These results are compared with those of previous experiments in the visual and acoustic fields and certain similarities and differences are discussed.

The design of a practical speech recognizer, incorporating many of the principles discussed in a companion paper, is described. The principal parts of the recognizer are as follows:– acoustic spectrum analyser; spectral pattern matcher; store of information about linguistic statistics; phoneme sequence memory; the computer; output circuits (a) the storage of computer decisions, (b) the control of the automatic typewriter. The speech material used with the completed recognizer is described, together with the results obtained. Future developments in speech typewriter research and possible uses of a successful recognizer are indicated.

Abstract

The output of a mechanical speech recognizer consists of a series of units which are closely correlated with the phoneme sequence which forms the speech input to the system. This output has to be transformed and presented to the human “reader,” usually in one of two ways, either by using it to reconstruct audible speech sequences or by presenting it in a sequence of visible characters. In both cases, the success of the recognizer will depend greatly on the degree to which good use can be made of the reader's existing linguistic knowledge, and methods of assessing its success must take this fact into account. This paper will present the results of experiments designed to compare methods of presenting the output and also methods of measuring the performance of the recognizer in terms of the ease with which the “reader” can reconstruct the input.

Abstract

A patient undergoing double aortocoronary bypass grafting had Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome without troublesome arrythmia preoperatively. Electrocardiographic, vectorcardiographic, and electrophysiological studies defined the functional properties of the anomalous bypass tract and suggested a posterior left ventricular insertion. Epicardial mapping identified early activation of the posterobasal portion of the left ventricle just to the left of the interventricular sulcus, beginning simultaneously with the onset of the delta wave.

35. Two Mutations in the First Gene of the Histidine Operon of Salmonella typhimuriumAffecting Control

Abstract

Two strains with mutations in the first structural gene of the histidine operon of Salmonella typhimuriumwere characterized. (The first structural gene specifies the first enzyme of histidine biosynthesis, phosphoribosyltransferase, which is sensitive to feedback inhibition by histidine.) One mutation, hisG3934, results in a phosphoribosyltransferase which is no longer sensitive to feedback inhibition by histidine but is instead subject to inhibition by aspartic acid. The other mutation, hisG3935, allows the histidine operon to be partially repressed by several amino acids, including aspartic acid. Analysis of hisG3935is consistent with the hypothesis that phosphoribosyltransferase is directly involved in the regulation of the histidine operon.

36. Double Onlay Preputial Flap for Proximal Hypospadias Repair

Abstract

Purpose: We describe a new technique for primary repair of proximal hypospadias. The double onlay preputial flap combines the principles of onlay urethroplasty and the double face preputial flap, namely preservation of the urethral plate and use of a total preputial flap. Materials and Methods: Common problems of classic onlay urethroplasty, including rotation and asymmetry of the penile shaft when the preputial flap is brought laterally around the shaft and the viability of the Byars flaps after dissecting the pedicle for the onlay flap, are avoided with this technique by passing the penis through a buttonhole incision in the pedicle of the total preputial flap. Onlay urethroplasty is performed using a secondary flap outlined from the total preputial flap. The remainder of the total preputial flap tissue is used to cover the ventral skin defect. Results: Since June 1994, 18 patients 6 months to 9 years old (median age 10 months) underwent primary hypospadias repair with the double onlay preputial flap technique, representing 15 percent of all repairs performed. Complications included a urethrocutaneous fistula, persistent chordee, a recessed meatus and a urethral diverticulum in 1 patient each. In all cases complications were corrected surgically with minor procedures. No patient had urethral stricture. Functional and cosmetic results were satisfactory in all patients. Conclusions: This technique yields good functional and cosmetic results for proximal hypospadias repair.

40. Hemodynamic Response to Acute Intravenous Digoxin in Patients with Recent Myocardial Infarction and Coronary Insufficiency with and without Heart Failure

Abstract

Intravenous digoxin was administered to 12 patients, ten with acute myocardial infarction and two with acute coronary insufficiency. Six patients had clinical failure and six did not. There was no beneficial hemodynamic response in the group without heart failure and only slight response in the group with mild to moderate heart failure. No significant rise in cardiac index or fall in pulmonary artery end-diastolic pressure occurred in either group. Maintenance digoxin therapy did not prevent the development of heart failure in two patients. A significant incidence of ventricular dysrhythmias occurred. The limited hemodynamic response in patients with heart failure may be due to the systemic vascular effects of digoxin, high levels of circulating catecholamines, and altered properties of the acutely ischemic or infarcted myocardium. The prophylactic use of digitalis glycosides in uncomplicated myocardial infarction cannot be advocated. Modifications are suggested in the indications for, and dose regimens of cardiac glycosides in heart failure complicating myocardial infarction.

42. Two Forms of Yeast Glycogen Synthetase and Their Role in Glycogen Accumulation

Abstract

The glycogen content of yeast rises dramatically just before the onset of the stationary phase of growth. Concomitantly, a rapid increase was found in the glucose 6-phosphate-independent (I) activity of glycogen synthetase, as well as in the total amount of enzyme. A mutant (GS 1-36) was obtained, which did not accumulate glycogen during growth. The synthetase from this strain was in the glucose 6-phosphate-dependent (D) form at all times. The total enzymatic activity of the mutant also increased sharply at the end of the logarithmic phase, although its maximal value was only one third that of the parent strain. Incubation with glucose of wild type resting cells from the logarithmic phase resulted in a slow accumulation of glycogen, which was accelerated after 20 min. At the same time a transformation from the D to I form of the enzyme was detected. The same slow initial rate of glycogen deposition was found with stationary cells of mutant GS 1-36, but the rate gradually declined to zero, rather than accelerating.The interconversion of the I and D forms was obtained with extracts from cells harvested during different phases of growth. Examination of the properties of the I and D forms showed that the latter was much more strongly inhibited by ATP at low glucose 6-phosphate concentration. These findings clearly establish the fundamental role of the I form in glycogen accumulation. When taken together with previous results, they also show that the physiological significance of the I-D interconversion depends on the concentration of glucose 6-phosphate. Under certain conditions glucsoe 6-phosphate appears to regulate directly the activity of the predominant form of the enzyme.

44. Role of Cyclic Adenosine 3′,5′-Monophosphate in the In Vivo Expression of the Galactose Operon of Escherichia coli

Abstract

Studies of levels of galactokinase in Escherichia coliwith mutations affecting synthesis of, or response to, cyclic adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate show that this nucleotide does not play a major role in expression of the galactose operon, causing at most a twofold stimulation. The discrepancy between our in vivo results and the marked stimulation by cyclic adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate in in vitro systems indicates that current cell-free systems lack a factor which allows efficient expression of the galactose operon even in the absence of cyclic adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate or of the binding protein for this nucleotide.
