Abstract

The article discusses research concerning the effectiveness of the wastewater treatment system being utilized at the Weeks manufacturing plant of Hanes Corporation in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The said treatment has been developed to remove dissolved organic dyes from wastewaters for possible reuse. Information on the use of dye solutions by the facility is presented. After employing strict quality control with regard to determining the quality of the treated water product, the treatment technique has been proven workable.

Abstract

The article reports that the U.S. production of dyes in 1972 amounted to 263 million pounds, 8% higher than the 244 million pounds produced in 1971. The dye industry related statistics were released on December 27, 1973 by the U.S. Dept. of Treasury's Tariff Commission. The figures also showed that, sales of dyes in 1972 amounted to 255 million pounds valued at $480 million compared with 230 million pounds valued at $423 million in 1971. According to the estimates of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), two thirds of the dyes consumed in the U.S. are used by the textile industry; about one-sixth is used for coloring paper; and the rest is used chiefly in the production of organic pigments and in dyeing of leather and plastics.
