The article presents information on the book "Ecclesiastical History of Newfoundland," by M.F. Howley. The book contains, not only the history of Catholic Church in Newfoundland, but also contains a considerable portion of the political history of that island and also an account of the discovery and early history of other parts of North America. Catholic Church in Newfoundland has to contend against long continued opposition of the British government and poverty. Catholic priests were forbidden to enter the island Catholics were not allowed to perform their own burial rights and they had to pay fees to the Episcopal Church, which did them no service in return of their money.
