The interaction of chromium-thiourea, Cr(tu)3Cl3, with heterocyclic amines and phenyl arsonic acid results in the formation of mixed ligand hexa-coordinated complexes of the type: [Cr(tu)2L2Cl2]Cl, [Cr(tu)2L′2]Cl3, [Cr(tu)2L″]Cl, (where L stands for pyridine, α, β, and γ-picolines, 2,4- and 2,6-lutidines, quinoline, isoquinoline, and acridine: L′ for o-phenanthroline and 2,2′-dipyridyl; and L″ represents phenyl arsonic acid). All these complexes are characterised by elemental analyses, potentiometric and conductometric measurements and i.r. spectral studies.

Summary The remanent magnetization of the basic igneous rocks of Skye, the hypersthene gabbro of Ardnamurchan, and the layered gabbro of Rhum has been examined. All the rocks possessing stable magnetization were found to be reversely magnetized. This is believed to be due to the Earth’s magnetic field being reversed during the half million years or so during which the rocks were formed. Reasons are given for supposing that the dips of the Skye rocks are formational. The ancient pole position during part of the Lower Miocene is estimated to be 70O.8 (k 3O.8) N. Lat., and 159O.6 ( L- 5O.1) E. Long., a position which is significantly different from that of the present geographic pole. It is concluded that there has been relative movement between North-west Europe and the pole since the Lower Miocene. The directions of magnetization are used in an attempt to correlate some of the lavas and dykes of Skye. It is also tentatively suggested that the rocks of Skye, Rhum and Ardnamurchan are of approximately the same age.

Neuraminidase treatment released all of the sialic acid of erythrocytes in the free form. The sialic acid which was released by ficin treatment appeared exclusively in the protein-bound form. Incubation of erythrocytes with ficin followed by neuraminidase, or neuraminidase followed by ficin, did not release additional sialic acid during the second enzyme incubation. It was observed that intact erythrocytes agglutinate in the presence of protamine sulfate without the participation of an antibody. In contrast, enzyme-treated cells (lacking the negative charge of sialic acid) do not agglutinate when incubated with positively charged protamine sulfate. Heparin (negative charge) appears to have an inhibitory effect on hemagglutination reactions, possibly by combining with electropositive antigen sites. The sialic acid component of erythrocytes has little relation to Rh antigens.

During URING THE past 15 years Reiter's syndrome has been found in 70 patients at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital. Long-term study of these patients has brought to light several new aspects of the disease. Among these 70 patients, the chronic recurrent form of the disease often became indistinguishable from rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. In seven patients whose case histories form the basis of this paper, the skin and joint lesions were exceptionally severe and eventually progressed until the disease very closely resembled psoriatic arthritis.
