The tridentate SchifF base N-3-hydroxy-n-propylsalicylaldimine can be coordinated with copper(II) to form three kinds of dimeric oxy-bridged antiferromagnetic complexes (metal: ligand ratio—1: 1), as well as the normal monomeric complex. In one of the dimeric complexes pairs of copper atoms are bridged by pairs of the deprotonated alcoholic oxygens of the ligands. The others have an extra ligand X (X=–Cl, –ONO2) per copper atom, the metals are bridged by phenolic oxygens, the alcoholic hydroxyls are not deprotonated, but are either coordinated (if X=Cl) to five-coordinated copper atoms in discrete dimer molecules, or participate in intermolecular hydrogen bonding linking individual dimeric molecules in which the copper atoms are four-coordinated. In the presence of pyridine, ammonia, or mild inorganic base, a rearrangement reaction can be induced, resulting in conversion of the phenolic-bridged (five-coordinated copper) dimer into the related alcoholic-bridged (fourcoordinated copper) dimer. New methods of preparation are given for three different dimeric complexes of N-3-hydroxypropylsalicylaldimine (PrOH.Sal) with copper (II), [Cu(PrOH.Sal)X]2 (X [dbnd] Cl, ONO2) and [Cu(PrO.Sal)]2. These preparations include interconversion of the complexes involving intramolecular rearrangement.

Crude oils from eight wells in Turner Valley have been distilled in Stedman columns. Graphs of boiling point vs. volume distilled, refractive index vs. boiling point, and specific refractivity vs. boiling point are presented.

Five cases of thalassemia minor in persons of Filipino and Chinese extraction were observed. The occurrence of biliary calculi in two of the patients suggests that this may be a relatively common complication of thalassemia as it is of other hemolytic diseases.

Ledger from McKendree Miners Hospital, Fayette County, the second of three hospitals opened by the state of West Virginia to care for people working in dangerous industries, including primarily mining, but also railroads and lumbering as well. The 544 page manuscript ledger (10x16x2) is a record of patients at the hospital from May 5, 1915 to February 3, 1916. Each page documents a single patient listing their name, city and state of residence, date, number of train or other method of reaching the hospital, gender, race, nationality, marital status, age, occupation, and religious affiliation. The diagnosis, family and patient medical history, prognosis, details of care, the date of discharge or death, and final results of treatment are also provided for each patient. While most of the patients were miners, other kinds of workers, as well as women and children, utilized the facility. The ledger shows that patients, both black and white, were treated for common ailments, work related injuries, and gunshot wounds, among many other complaints; and that doctors delivered babies and performed numerous surgeries. The ledger includes an alphabetical index of patients.

The collection consists of the "Proposed Rules of MFD Caucus", from District 3l, UMWA, and the transcribed testimony of Charles M. Culp, a West Virginia miner, given in Washington, D.C., on 18 February 1972 in an investigation of his retention by District 31 as campaign worker for the Boyle-Titler-Owens international slate in 1969. Culp's handwritten statement and other evidence are included with the testimony.

I N THE not-long-past custodial era, mental hospital patients were strictly disciplined to prevent complete bedlam on the crowded, unpleasant, locked wards. Today both treatment and facilities have improved, but too many of the old rules still survive, especially in wards for long-term patients. Most of them must rise and shower at the same time every day, line up for nourishing but uninspiring food, work without pay, and, except for a fortunate few who have friends or relatives nearby, stay on the hospital grounds except for an occasional trip in the hospital bus. Often those who are less disturbed must live with untidy, disagreeable, and occasionally assaultive fellow patients. In these circumstances, as Rowland points out, withdrawal is quite realistic behavior.1 But we do more than encourage withdrawal by neglecting to help our patients live more normal lives. We also encourage dependency and passivity by waiting on them unnecessarily and providing all their pleasures and entertainments. We cater to them whether or not they cooperate, work, socialize, or make any effort to improve. True, during their acute episodes these long-term patients need considerable care afl(l supervision, but we continue to nurse them long after the acute phase of their illness has passed. This system differs radically from ordinary society, in which rewards must be earned and unsuitable behavior may result in losing rewards or privileges. In an endeavor to change this long-established paternalism, we selected a group of long-term women patients, most of whom had been in the hospital for about four years. Although many still were psychotic, they were not grossly disturbed and were capable of limited self-care. All of them worked in hospital industry six hours a day five days a week.
