21. Eliciting Effects of Verbal and Nonverbal Cues on Projective Test Responses

Abstract

A verbal reinforcer and two nonverbal immediacy cues, eye contact and body lean, were manipulated by an E under far and close conditions of interpersonal distance in a projective testing situation. As hypothesized, significant increases in the dependent measure, the number of thematic responses, were found for the verbal cue at both interaction ranges. Body lean did not significantly affect the number of responses at either interaction distance. (Author)

Abstract

The article presents a brief history on the federal mortgage lending and insuring practices in the U.S. The federal government has been a involved in the mortgage industry, beginning with the creation in 1932 of the Home Loan Bank System. Later, the Federal Farm Mortgage Corporation, the Home Owners' Loan Corporation and the RFC Mortgage Company were created to aid homeowners during the Great Depression. The Federal Housing Administration was the next step and struggled to find the proper amount of involvement in the housing markets.

Abstract

The article reports on the outlook for the secondary mortgage market and offers a brief history of home mortgage lending in the United States. The Federal Housing Administration and Veterans' Administration finance systems are expected to continue and support a permanent secondary mortgage market, which will reduce cyclical and other variations in mortgage funding. The Federal National Mortgage Association, or "Fanny May," was formed in 1938 to support the secondary market. Topics include the purpose of Federal Home Loan Banks, data on nonfarm mortgages during 1939-1952, and mortgage guarantee insurance.

Abstract

The article discusses the attention being received by extinguishability as an important component in assessing the overall hazard associated with the flammability of textiles. Elements of extinguishability in considering clothing fires include the human actions in dealing with the fire and the response of the burning fabric and garment to such actions. Major mechanisms that are believed to be involved in understanding the fabric or garment response to some extinguishing action are oxygen effects, gas effects, and cooling effects. A laboratory test employing air flow effects to analyze running in a burning garment showed that fabric burning rates varied with air velocity and orientation of the flame propagation vector to air flow vector.

40. Eye Contact and Distance: A Re-Examination of Measurement Problems.

Abstract

Results supportive of Argyle and Dean's (1965) equilibri um theory prediction, relating eye contact and interpersonal distance, have been questioned on methodological grounds. Specifically, the criticism suggests that eye contact only appears to increase with in creased distance between interacting pairs because the observer dis tance also increases and results in overestimation due to decreased discriminability. An evaluation of the evidence on the measurement artifact itself suggests that it is a concern only in contrived set tings involving programmed directional gaze and not in situations involving visual interaction between naive subjects. Abstract

Recent reviews on the influence of space on social interactions have provided interesting insights into the nature of spatial determinants. However, a great deal of variability in spatial arrangements remains after the cultural component has been subtracted. Marked differences in the use of space have been noted between normals and schizophrenics. R. Sommer (1959) found that in discussion sessions schizophrenics remained more distant from partners than did normals. An alternate, indirect approach to investigating the relationship between personality characteristics and interpersonal distance is to manipulate interpersonal distance and examine its effects on impressions of personality. Instead of attempting to relate personality characteristics to observed spatial behavior, the task is to manipulate spatial behavior and examine perceived differences in personality characteristics. This article aims to investigate this issue. It was hypothesized that an individual will be perceived less socially active as the physical distance between him and a subject rating him increases.
