Summary A review on the historical concept and a classification of neuromas of the appendix is presented. This study refers to 152 appendices with neuromas, identified in a series of 1,000 specimens surgically removed (15.20%). Neuromas were classified according to their location and evolution. According to location, the more frequent neuromas were axial (46.71%), then intramucosal (43.43%) and finally the submucosal (9.86%). Concerning their evolution, growing neuromas were more frequent (116 cases-76.32%) than the regressive ones (36 cases-23.68%). Two types of regressive neuromas are recognized: the sclerosing, more common, and the myxoid type, lesser. The use of Masson's trichrome for the diagnosis of neuromas of the appendix as well as for the recognition of their evolutive types is emphasized. The Authors feel that, considering the discovery of 5-HT and its production by argentaffin cells, and considering that the majority of neuromas present argentaffin cells inside them, the clinical diagnosis of neurogenic appendicitis or neuro-appendicopathy should be reconsidered again.
