1. Evaluation of the Job Upgrading Project: September 1967--August 1968, and 1968-69.

Abstract

The project, a voluntary program, funded under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, was designed to aid in the educational and occupational adjustment of young people, 16 through 20 years of age, who have left school, or who are potential dropouts. The rationale of the program requires that the trainee's goals come first, not pre-ordained superimposed goals from the project. The dropout volumtarily applies for acceptance in the project and is interviewed by the teacher/coordinator. If the prospective trainee's goal is in the broad areas of employment, further training, or a return to regular school, he is informed what assistance the project can offer him. If the young person asks to be enrolled and is accepted, he and the coordinator decide which components of the Job Upgrading curriculum will best help him achieve his goals, which then become the project objectives for this particular trainee. There are fifteen centers in various high schools located throughout Detroit. (Author/JM)

2. Evaluation of the Program to Continue the Education of Girls Who Must Leave School Because of Pregnancy, 1971-1972.

Abstract

The primary objectives of the Continuing Education of Girls Who Must Leave School Because of Pregnancy Project (CEG), which is funded under Title I of the 1965 Elementary Secondary Education Act, are to reduce the percentage of female dropouts from Detroit schools via the enrollment of 110 pregnant girls in the project, to have the enrolled girls make normal academic progress in a schedule of classes appropriate for their grade level, and to have the girls return to a regular school following the completion of their CEG classes and their pregnancies and complete requirements for their high school graduation. During the school year, the evaluators made many visits to observe the CEG Project in action. They found it projected a warm, non-censuring climate. The fact that every student at CEG shares a common handicap allows them to provide the mutual support for each other that they need to continue their education. These things combined with a low pupil teacher ratio and the additional supportive services of the project have permitted the girls to resume their classes, begin to restore their self-concepts and self-respect, and revive their educational and career aspirations. Only 14 percent of the CEG girls did not continue their education after their enrollment in the project. Of 292 girls who were enrolled during the 1971-72 school year, 33 (or 11 percent) became dropouts, with the remainder either graduating or returning to school to continue their education. CEG girls achieved a slightly higher honor point average in their CEG classes than they had in regular school. (Author/JM)

Guidelines for diagnostic evaluation are presented as are approaches from perceptual motor, developmental, visual, neurophysiological, linguistic, and diagnostic-remedial points of view. Additional topics considered are illustrative classroom programs, teacher preparation, educational research, parent groups, special education legislation, and future prospects. (JM)

The association provides services to the U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It was believed that the Network is designed to become a permanent organization locally controlled and funded. And it is guided by special education personnel to help them save handicapped children.

24. THE UPTAKE OF UREA BY MARINE PHYTOPLANKTON.

Abstract

Half-saturation constants for urea uptake by 4 clones of neritic diatoms capable to utilizing urea were determined from short-term uptake studies with [SUP15]N-labeled urea. K[SUB8] values obtained were similar to those determined earlier for ammonium, and since ammonium and urea concentrations are similar in the marine environment, it was concluded that these species are capable of utilizing ecologically significant concentrations of urea. Two of 3 species unable to grow on urea showed patterns of short-term uptake not unlike those of species capable of utilizing urea, which implies that their assimilatory rather than uptake processes are defective with regard to urea utilization. The third species initially took [SUP15]N (supplied as urea) into the cells but subsequently released it back into the medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article provides information on the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA), an assessment for children with psycholinguistic deficits. ITPA model has similarity with the Osgood model, except for the tests at the integrative level. It includes sequential tests that involve auditory and visual memory. ITPA requires three major test revisions to produce the final test. Results of ITPA can be presented in the form of a psychodiagnostic profile.

Abstract

Skeletonema costatum and Coccolithus huxleyi were grown in nitrogen-limited chemostal cultures with illumination provided in light/dark cycles. S. costatum assimilated nitrate and ammonium primarily during the day and less so at night. Conversely, the concentration of nitrate and ammonium in the culture medium varied periodically, increasing at night and decreasing in the light. C. huxleyi assimilated both N sources at a rate sufficient to keep them at very low levels both day and night. However, the activity of N-assimilating enzymes, measured in cell-free extracts, were higher in the light than in the dark periods, implying light/dark differences in the capacity to assimilate nitrogen. Such periodicity in the rate of uptake and enzymatic activity appears to complicate the mathematical expression of nutrient-limited growth of phytoplankton exposed to natural light/dark cycles. Three aspects of diel periodicity in N assimilation have been observed in natural phytoplankton communities in the sea: (1) in assimilation rate, (2) in activity of enzymes of N-assimilation, and (3) in the ammonium concentration of the seawater. 33. Mechlorethamine Hydrochloride Treatment of Experimental Tuberculous Uveitis: Part III. The Effect of Intravenous Mechlorethamine Hydrochloride in Experimental Tuberculous Uveitis of the Tuberculin-Sensitive Rabbit

Abstract

The first 2 parts of this report have been presented in a previous communication.1 Intravenous mechlorethamine hydrochloride caused no observable pathological changes in the normal rabbit eye. Treatment with intravenous mechlorethamine of infectious tuberculous uveitis in nontuberculin-sensitive rabbits showed only a temporary inhibition of the inflammatory process.Part 3, the conclusion of this project, is similar to Part 2 with the exception that the rabbits used in this last experiment are tuberculin sensitive.The ocular response of the sensitive animal is different from that of the nonsensitive animal. Larger doses of bacilli are necessary to produce lesions. When an appropriately larger dose is given, 24 to 36 hours after the injection of the bacilli into the anterior chamber, there is a sharp inflammatory response—the typical picture of nongranulomatous iritis. This initial reaction is a bacterial hypersensitivity reaction produced in a hypersensitive animal by the tubercle protein in the inoculum.

34. Mechlorethamine Hydrochloride (Nitrogen Mustard) Treatment of Experimental Tuberculous Uveitis: Part I and Part II

Abstract

Mechlorethamine hydrochloride (nitrogen mustard [methyl-bis (β-chlorethyl) amine hydrochloride] is a nitrogen analogue of sulfur mustard, the vesicant gas of World War I. It has been used as a therapeutic agent in various neoplasms and as an anti-inflammatory agent in various diseases, some of which are rheumatoid arthritis, status asthmaticus, some collagen diseases, chronic recurring uveitis of unknown etiology. Experimental substantiation of the efficacy of this drug as an anti-inflammatory agent in uveitis is lacking; therefore it is the purpose of this paper to report the effect of intravenous mechlorethamine hydrochloride on the inflammatory response of experimentally induced anterior tuberculous uveitis in the rabbit.Mechlorethamine hydrochloride is a tertiary amine which is stable when kept in the dry form in the original unopened container. 36. Surgery of the Filtering Bleb

Documentation for techniques of surgical manipulation of a filtering bleb is meager in ophthalmological literature. Of particular interest in this matter is: (1) the management of loss of the filtering bleb after external filtering surgery for glaucoma, (2) management of external fistulization of a filtering bleb, (3) treatment of extension of a filtering bleb into the cornea with and without abnormal hypotony, and (4) the management of postoperative fistulization of the corneoscleral section in cataract surgery which results in the formation of a filtering bleb. It is the intent of this communication to present methods of treating these fortunately infrequent complications. Abstract

Intraocular infection with Nocardia asteroides has not been reported in various extensive reviews of and experiments in ocular mycology,1-5 but we believe that it is important to understand the ocular pathologic changes caused by infection with this fungus, because of its similarity both morphologically and pathologically to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.6 Also, because fungous infections of the eye appear to be increasing in incidence as a result of the widespread use of topical antibiotics and corticosteroids.7-9 It has been estimated that 5% of all patients in tuberculosis hospitals have nocardiosis that mistakenly has been diagnosed as tuberculosis.10The purpose of this paper is to present the intraocular pathologic findings in the normal rabbit after experimental infection of the eyes with N. asteroides.Nocard,11 in 1888, isolated and described the species Nocardia farcineux which caused "la maladie des boeufs de la Guadeloupe," a lymphatic and visceral disease of

38. Metastatic Carcinoma of the Retina: Report of a Case and the Pathologic Findings

Abstract

Metastatic carcinoma of the eye involving the retina alone is an extremely rare lesion; only two reports of previous cases have been found in a review of the literature. The first report was that by Arisawa1 in 1914. However, Smoleroff and Agatston3 reviewed this case, which was in Sattler's2 textbook, and concluded that the tumor involved the optic disc as well as the retina. In their article they reported a case of secondary carcinoma limited only to the retina. Our report is of a secondary carcinoma of the macula of the right eye, the primary site of the tumor being the rectosigmoid. REPORT OF CASE A 51-year-old white man was first seen by one of us (W. D. Abstract

The article relates an author's perspective on the essentially equal goals of Special Education Instructional Materials Center and teachers of children with learning disabilities. The author suggested that teacher of children with learning disabilities must focus more on the present than in the past. In addition, he offered two functional recommendations for teachers of learning disabled children that includes to accept one appropriate educational approach and to indiscriminately apply it. Moreover, the author also proposed the adoption of eclectic approach in the teaching of children with learning disabilities.

Abstract

The article comments on the study conducted by Paul Weener on the validity and reliability of the Illinois test of psycholinguistic abilities (ITPA). The author stated that the critique is of little use to those who are familiar with the ITPA and is misleading to those who are not. The paper failed to account the many independent studies featuring ITPA. According to one independent study on preschoolers, ITPA subscale reliability is low over 12 to 21 month test retest intervals. The author mentions the reason behind the low magnitude of correlations in the ITPA's technical manuals as found in the study.

Abstract

Reaction of tubercidin (4-amino-7-beta-D-ribofuranosylpyrrolo(2,3-d)pyrimidine) with alpha-acetoxyisobutyryl chloride in the presence of excess sodium iodide in acetonitrile gave an acylated iodo intermediate which was converted into 3'-deoxytubercidin by hydrogenolysis and subsequent saponification. Analogous treatment of formycin (7-amino-3-beta-D-ribofuranosylpyrazolo(4,3-d)pyrimidine) gave 3'-deoxyformycin and 2'-deoxyformycin in an approximate ratio of 3:2. These purified nucleosides were individually deaminated enzymatically to give 3'-deoxyformycin B and 2'-deoxyformycin B.
