The infra-red absorption spectra of the unsubstituted pyrylium cation and of 25 di-, tri-, tetra- and penta-substituted pyrylium salts (mostly perchlorates) with alkyl and/or phenyl groups are described. Assignments of IR bands are made in correlation with the spectrum of pyridine, and the variation of band position and intensity depending on substitution is discussed. Implications for the assignments of the pyridinium ion and of pyrones are outlined.

Dibenzotricyclooctadiene (I) yields on heating with dienophiles, Diels-Alder adducts (IV and V) and forms with oxygen a peroxide (VI). These reactions are explained by formation of an intermediate with an ortho-quinonoid structure (II). Polycyclic Diels-Alder adducts were obtained in good yields from a solution of benzocyclobutadiene and unstable hydrocarbons such as ortho-quinodimethane or 2,3-dihydronaphthalene. Revised structures are proposed for several compounds previously obtained.1

Durch Addition von Brom an anti-Tricyclo[4.2.0.02.5]octadien-(3.7) (1) werden zwei isomere Tetrabromtricyclooctane 5 und 6 erhalten. Mit Basen spalten diese HBr ab und gehen in Dibromtricyclooctadien 7 uber. Beim Erhitzen lagern sich 5 und 6 in die isomeren Tetrabromverbindungen 13 und 14 um, welche ein Tricyclo[4.2.0.02.4]octan-Skelett enthalten.

Bei Eliminierung des Chlors aus cis-3.4-Dichlor-cyclobuten mittels Natriumamalgam in ather. Losung entsteht das syn-Tricyclo[4.2.0.02.5]octadien-(3.7) (I), identisch mit dem fruher aus 1.2.3.4-Tetrabrom-cyclobutan erhaltenen Produkt. Bei ahnlicher Behandlung mit Lithiumamalgam bildet sich uberwiegend das isomere anti- Tricycloocatadien (II). Die Ozonspaltung und einige Derivate dieser Kohlenwasserstoffe werden beschrieben.

The deuteration and dedeuteration of 2,4,6-trimethylpyrylium perchlorate in water (D2O and H2O, respectively) was studied by nuclear magnetic resonance using as a quantitative standard for protons tetramethylammonium bromide. γ-Methyl groups exchange faster than α-methyl groups; β-standing hydrogens exchange very slowly. A mechanism involving anhydrobase and pseudobase formation is discussed and theoretical calculations are mentioned. Geminal hydrogen-deuterium spin-spin coupling in incompletely deuterated methyl groups is observed.

Das aus Cyclooctatetraen und Acetylendicarbonsauremethylester dargestellte Addukt V gibt durch DIELS-ALDER-Synthese mit 2.5-Diphenyl-3.4-benzofuran (I) das Addukt VI, welches durch Wasserabspaltung in das Naphthocyclobuten-Derivat VII verwandelt wird. Das durch thermische Zersetzung von VII entstandene, unbestandige 1.4-Diphenyl-2.3-naphthocyclobutadien (VIII) wird mit I abgefangen und das erhaltene Addukt in 1.4.5.8-Tetraphenyl-2.3;6.7-dibenzo-biphenylen (X) ubergefuhrt.

The hydrogen (proton) NMR spectrum of the complex [C 4 H 4 AgClO 4 ] n in D 2 O shows a single resonance at τ = +2·7 consistent with a formulation of the complex as a monomeric cyclobutadiene co-ordination compound. IR spectra of this compound and the analogous ones with NO 3 − and BF 4 − anions have been discussed in relation to possible structures of this type. It is concluded that the crystalline complexes probably have (C 4 H 4 Ag) + cations of symmetry C 2v or C 2h . The NMR and IR spectra of the C 8 H 8 hydrocarbon obtained by decomposition of the above complexes support a cis -tricyclooctadiene-1,5 structure for the molecule.

Aus tert.-Butylacetylen und (C6H5CN)2·PdCl2 bildet sich der Tri-tert.-butyl-Dewar-Benzolpalladiumchlorid-Komplex 1. Bei dessen reduktiver Zersetzung entsteht ein Monochlorderivat mit Bicyclo[2.2.0]hexen-Skelett (10). In Gegenwart von Brom oder Jod geht 1 in ein Dichlorid mit Bicyclo[3.1.0]hexen-Skelett (19) uber. Unter dem Einflus von Sauren entsteht aus 10 ein Fulven 29.

In dem aus Cyclooctatetraen und Maleinsaureanhydrid durch Diensynthese gewonnenen Addukt nehmen die Carboxylgruppen endo- und der viergliedrige Ring in Bezug auf die Carboxylgruppen anti-Stellung ein. Die Addition von Brom an Addukte dieser Art erfolgt unter Bildung transanularer Bindungen. Im Addukt des Cyclooctatetraens mit Acetylendicarbonsaureester nimmt der viergliedrige Ring ebenfalls endo-Stellung zu den Carboxylgruppen ein.

Das Benzocyclobutadien im Entstehungszustand dimerisiert sich, in Gegenwart von Nickeltetracarbonyl, zum 3.4;7.8-Dibenzo-tricyclo-[4.2.0.02.5]-octadien-(3.7) (IV). Dieses geht beim Erwarmen, unter Aufspaltung des mittleren Cyclobutanringes, in das 1.2;5.6-Dibenzo-cyclooctatetraen (V) uber, welches bei der Anlagerung von Brom wiederum eine Ringverengerung zu einem Cyclobutan-Derivat (VII) erfahrt.

Bei Anlagerung von Chlor an Cyclooctatetraen entsteht als Hauptprodukt das bicyclische Cyclooctatetraen-cis-dichlorid (cis-7.8-Dichlor-bicyclo[4.2.0]octadien-(2.4) (II) neben wenigtrans-Dichlorid (I). Das aus Cyclooctatetraen-cis-dichlorid und Acetylendicarbonsaure-dimethylester erhaltene Diels-Alder-Addukt liefert bei der thermischen Zersetzung neben Phthalsaureester cis-3.4-Dichlorcyclobuten (VIII). Einige Umsetzungen dieser Verbindung werden beschrieben.
