This document presents a report of earned degrees conferred by institutions of higher education in the United States in 1969-1970. Some of the highlights of the report include: (1) 1,072,581 degrees were conferred at the bachelor's and higher levels at 1,617 institutions; (2) publically controlled institutions awarded 65% of all degrees; (3) publically controlled institutions awarded 66% of all bachelor's degrees, 42% of all first-professional degrees; 65% of all master's degrees, and 64% of all doctoral degrees; (4) 54% of all bachelor's degrees were in the areas of education, social sciences, and business and commerce; (5) 60% of all master's degrees were in the areas of education, social sciences, and business and commerce; and (6) 47% of all doctoral degrees were in the areas of education, the physical sciences, and the social sciences. This summary report is based on the U.S. Office of Education's 11th annual survey of students enrolled for advanced degrees. Included in this publication are summary enrollment tables by level of study, attendance status, sex of student, field of specialization, State or other U.S. area, and institutional control and level. This is the 22nd survey in the US Office of Education's annual series of surveys on earned degrees conferred by US institutions of higher education. This volume, Summary Data, is the first of 2 parts of the survey of bachelor's and higher degrees awarded in 1968-69. Data are presented by level of degree, field of specialization, sex of degree recipient, state, level of institution, and institutional control. Part B, covering Institutional Data, will list degrees conferred in each field by each institution. A third publication will provide information on associate degrees and other awards below the bachelor's level. (JS)

This report provides tabular data on baccalaureate and higher degrees. Data were obtained from the survey of "Degrees and other Formal Awards Conferred Between July 1, 1970 and June 30, 1971" conducted by the U.S. Office of Education. Highlights indicated: (1) More than 1.1 million degrees were conferred at the bachelor's and higher levels in 1970-71 by 1,644 institutions of higher education in the U.S. (2) Publicly controlled institutions awarded 65% of the degrees in 1970-71 and 1969-70, up from 63% in 1968-69. (3) In 1970-71, publicly controlled institutions awarded 66% of the bachelor's degrees, 43% of the first-professional degrees, 66% of the master's degrees, and 65% of the doctor's degrees. (4) Men received 59% of all degrees in 1970-71 and 60% in 1969-70. (5) The largest discipline divisions, in terms of degrees conferred: 54% of all bachelors degrees were in education, social sciences and business and management; 57% of all master's degrees were in education, business and management, and social sciences; and 45% of all doctor's degrees were in education, physical sciences, and social sciences. (6) Elementary education had the highest number of degrees at the bachelor's and master's level; law, at the first-professional level; and chemistry, at the doctor's level. This publication provides detailed listings of graduate enrollments reported by 865 institutions that enroll students for advanced degrees. This report presents the classification by level of enrollment in two categories: first year and beyond first year. Tables 1 and 2 provide aggregate enrollment data respectively for (1) master's and doctor's degrees, and (2) first-professional degrees by level of enrollment, sex of student, attendance status, and institutional control and level. Tables 3 and 4 present aggregate enrollment data respectively for (1) master's and doctor's degrees, and (2) first-professional degrees, by level of enrollment, sex of student, attendance status, State or other area, and institution. Table 5, the bulk of the report, presents aggregate enrollment data for advanced degrees, by level of enrollment, sex of student, attendance status, area and field of study, and institution. (AF)

This document provides a detailed listing of bachelor's and higher degrees conferred in each academic field by each institution during the period from July 1, 1968 through June 30, 1969. Table 1 presents a brief historical comparison of degrees granted from 1965-66 through 1968-69. Table 2 is a summary of the degrees conferred in 1968-69 by level of degree, sex of student, and control and level of institution. In this table data are presented separately for universities and other 4-year institutions. Table 3 summarizes degrees conferred by each institution in the survey, by sex of student and level of degree; totals by state are also shown in this table. Table 4, which forms the bulk of the report, gives the number of degrees conferred at the bachelor's, master's and doctor's level in each field by each institution. The institutions are listed alphabetically by state. Table 5 presents a similar listing for first-professional degrees. (AF)

This report presents detailed listings of graduate enrollments within each field of study as reported by each of the 884 U.S. institutions enrolling students for advanced degrees in Fall 1970. The breakdown of the reporting institutions was as follows: 286 had enrollments for first-professional degrees as well as for master's or doctoral degrees; 522 had enrollments for master's and doctoral degrees only; and 76 had enrollments for first-professional degrees only. The breakdowns within the tables list enrollments by field of study, level of study, attendance status, and sex of student. (HS)

This publication provides a detailed listing of enrollment of candidates for advanced degrees at each institution of higher education in each academic field. Overall summaries of 1968 enrollments for advanced degrees are presented in tables 1 and 2. Table 1 reports enrollment for master's and doctoral degrees, and table 2 reports enrollment for first-professional degrees in selected fields. Table 3, comprising the bulk of the report, lists institutional enrollments in alphabetical order by state within each subject field. (Author/HS)

This annual survey provides data on the status of programs leading to associate degrees, diplomas, and other awards based on less than 4 years of work beyond high school in US institutions of higher education. It covers degrees awarded between July 1, 1968 and June 30, 1969. Detailed listings of specific awards granted by each institution, by type of organized occupational curriculum, and by type of associate degree conferred constitute the greater portion of the report. Summary tables present overall counts of awards conferred and include subtotals by control and level of institution, state, and curriculum. (JS)

Jaundice often complicates recovery after surgery. We have studied 180 patients undergoing 218 major operations and found an incidence of 3.7% severe jaundice and 16.5% mild jaundice. The causes of the jaundice were diverse, but the most important was a bilirubin overload (primarily from blood transfusion) which could not be excreted effectively by a liver whose cellular metabolism was disturbed. We found no evidence of a relationship between halothane and liver damage.

It is generally agreed that rheumatic fever is more prevalent in temperate than in tropical zones. It has also been stated that the salutary effect of the tropics on rheumatic patients may be due to the lower incidence of upper respiratory infections in regions enjoying a tropical climate. The present study confirms the rarity of rheumatic disease in the tropical zones of Mexico, but also shows that the rate of streptococcus carriers is as high in the tropics as in temperate regions. It also gives data showing that antistreptolysin titers are higher in the sera from persons inhabiting the tropics, thus pointing to the greater prevalence of streptococcal infections in tropical zones. The above considerations suggest that the tropical climate affects the response of the host before the rheumatogenic agent.
