Frutos de café Mundo Novo, colhidos verdes, após o benefício, foram analisados quanto aos defeitos comerciais que apresentaram. A classificação foi efetuada independentemente, por três classificadores, com a contagem de grãos "normais" e daqueles considerados defeitos, isto é, "verde" (três categorias), "ardido" e "prêto". Notou-se uma elevada porcentagem de grãos normais quanto à coloração, e também a ocorrência de grãos dos tipos "ardido" e "prêto", no café não maduro. Com a remoção da película prateada verificou-se uma redução na porcentagem de grãos "verdes" e um acentuado aumento na porcentagem de grãos "ardidos", e um aumento menor na de grãos "normais" e "prêtos". Estas observações indicam que os grãos normalmente classificados no comércio como "verdes" devem esta característica à côr .anormal da película, e que os grãos "ardidos" têm, como uma das suas origens, a colheita de frutos verdes. The frequency of defective coffee beans was determined in samples of unripe fruits of the cultivar Mundo Novo (Coffea arabica).Ten samples of 1000 seeds each obtained from green fruits after sundrying and shelling were independently scored for the commercial defects by three coffee classifiers. Each one of the classifiers recorded the occurrence of green-coated, brown and black beans before and after removal of the silver skin. The data revealed that more than half of the beans had normal green color whereas 44.9 per cent were green-coated, 3.5 per cent were brown and 0.1 per cent were black beans. The removal of the silver skin affected the previous classification giving 59.7 per cent of normal green beans, 39.5 per cent of brown and 0.3 per cent of black beans. These observations indicated that the so-called green-coated beans are caused by the presence of the silver skin which retains green pigments probably chlorophyll. On the other hand the browns which have been considered as product of over-fermentation were scored in a much higher frequency whereas the percentage of black beans was little altered after the removal of the silver skin. The factors responsible for origin of the brown and black beans are discussed. Preliminary studies of the cup quality of the normal green beans selected from these samples indicated that the quality of the beverage had the poor taste characteristic of unripe coffee despite of the appearance of the beans.

São apresentados dados referentes à produção de café cereja em seis anos consecutivos, de um ensaio em que seis populações F2 derivadas dos cultivares 'Mundo Novo', 'Bourbon Amarelo', 'Bourbon Vermelho', 'Caturra Amarelo' e 'Caturra Vermelho' são analisadas. Duas populações destacaram-se pela produtividade e tipo de planta, e alguns de seus representantes foram escolhidos para estudo da F3 e prosseguimento do plano de melhoramento. Dessas populações a mais promissora corresponde à F2 da hibridação entre a planta CP 374-19 de 'Mundo Novo' e CJ 24-6 de 'Bourbon Amarelo'. Analisaram-se as variações da produção em cada um dos seis anos consecutivos, separadamente e em conjunto, e também os dados referentes à produção acumulada de dois e quatro primeiros anos, a fim de compará-los com os dados de produção total dos seis anos de produções consecutivas. Os resultados mostram que a classificação das populações depois do quarto ano é bastante semelhante à obtida após a análise de seis anos de produção. A análise das plantas individuais mostrou que nas populações F2 estudadas é bastante reduzida a proporção de cafeeiros valiosos para prosseguimento da seleção. The existence of several major genetic factors affecting important agronomic characteristics has led the coffee breeders to use them in their breeding program. The gene Ct (reduced growth) and xc (yellow pericarp and better out-turn) have been used rather extensively in an attempt to reduce the height of the 'Bourbon Amarelo' and improve the out-turn of the 'Mundo Novo' cultivars. Some data of a series of hybrids between 'Bourbon Amarelo', 'Caturra Amarelo', 'Caturra Vermelho', 'Bourbon Vermelho' and 'Mundo Novo' are discussed in the present paper. As expected, due to the origin of these cultivars, the F2 generation showed little genetic variation. Some of the new recombinants carrying the desirable major genetic factors, were shown to be inferior to the cultivar 'Mundo Novo'. The most promising combination was selected from the cross 'Bourbon Amarelo' x 'Mundo Novo'. Some plants selected from the cross 'Caturra Amarelo' x 'Bourbon Amarelo', although not as productive as 'Mundo Novo', are much shorter. These latter selections, will improve the condition for harvesting operation and will permit the cultivation of the coffee trees with reduced spacing. Crosses between selected plants of the cultivars 'Bourbon Amarelo' and 'Caturra Amarelo' gave rise to progenies with a high proportion of plants producing fruits with empty locules. The coffee plants used in the crosses did not carry the alleles for endosperm abortion. Consequently, this fact may be taken as evidence that the endosperm abortion may be produced by at least a pair of complementary genetic factors. It also indicates that in hybrid populations all plants must be analysed to avoid the selection of those which may carry this defect.
