2. Broadcasting and the Need for Replay Facilities at the Open University.

Abstract

The Open University of Great Britain relies heavily on broadcasting as a mode of instruction, but increased course offerings are making it impossible to broadcast each lesson more than once. To reach students unable to view the original broadcast, video cassette reorder systems were tested in six community study centers as part of a 1974 pilot study. Student use patterns, equipment reliability, and variations among the centers were monitored. By the end of the year, 258 playbacks had been attended by 496 students. It was concluded that, if small technical difficulties could be overcome and initial capital expenditures reduced, a central library of video cassettes could become part of the Open University of the future. 3. A Single-Administration Reliability Index for Criterion-Referenced Tests: The Mean Split-Half Coefficient of Agreement.

Abstract

For classical, norm-referenced test reliability, Cronbach's alpha has been shown to be equal to the mean of all possible split-half Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, adjusted by the Spearman-Brown prophecy formula. For criterion-referenced test reliability, in an analogous vein, this paper provides the rationale behind, the analysis of, computational formulas for, and characteristics of a coefficient equal to the mean of all possible split-half coefficients of agreement. In addition, the relation of this coefficient to other test indices, including those of Harris and Livingston, is presented. (Author)

4. Evaluation of Patterns in Arithmetic in Grades 1-4, 1970-71: Effects on Teachers.

Abstract

A large-scale, summative, comparative evaluation of "Patterns in Arithmetic (PIA)", a modern televised arithmetic curriculum for grades one through six, was carried out in grades one through four in both rural and urban schools during the 1970-71 school year. This report deals with the ways in which PIA affects teachers: in basic mathematical knowledge, knowledge of PIA-specific content, and attitudes toward teaching arithmetic. Findings indicate that PIA can be used effectively as in-service education, particularly for those teachers with relatively lower initial knowledge of the basic mathematics which underlies a contemporary elementary school mathematics program. PIA does not seem to change teachers' attitudes, however; nor is it beneficial in increasing knowledge of concepts not specifically related to PIA. These results seem to hold equally for both rural and urban schools. (Author/JM)
