Abstract

Irrigation return flows are agricultural wastes of major significance in the western states. Irrigated agriculture is the largest consumer of water in the U.S., and return flows from irrigation constitute a large portion of the flow in many western streams. The necessity for leaching salt concentrated in the root zone by evapotranspiration concentrates salt in return flows and causes damages downstream. Numerous engineering control measures can be applied to restrict and reduce water pollution from irrigation. These control measures present institutional constraints, and potential management concepts applicable to this agricultural waste are described briefly. In general, present water laws contribute to irrigation return flow quality problems. Irrigators use their full water rights, else they will lose them. Irrigators generally have a negative incentive to internalize the external diseconomies associated with their excessive use of water.

Abstract

Adequate comfort conditions in any space heating process can be assured only if a good understanding of the dynamic temperature variations is possessed. The vast majority of published literature considering the system dynamics assumes that the temperature variations have an exponential increase or decrease with time, and hence, that the thermal system can be modeled by linear RC equivalent circuits. These linear models have a severe restriction in that the time constant of the exponential variations remain constant under all conditions. A few published articles giving experimental data have indicated that in discontinuously controlled electric heating processes the system time constant during heating (active time constant) is not necessarily the same as the system time constant during the interval in which no heat is supplied (passive time constant).

Abstract

The economy of the High Plains of West Texas is based on irrigated agriculture. Because all irrigation water is derived from storage in the Ogallala aquifer, maximum irrigation development is expected to occur around 1980. Irrigation has been found to have a total value of about $35.00 per acre-ft to farmers in the area, and a total value to all sectors of the economy in the area of about $100.00 per acre-ft. Based on these values, and on the assumption that nonfarming sectors of the economy would be willing to pay their proportionate shares of the cost of importation of water as envisioned by the Texas Water Plan, the writer concludes that the importation of water to the area to sustain the present high level of economy is economically feasible.

Abstract

The chemical reaction of the water is an important factor in the reactions and resistance of organisms. Fresh-water fishes select slight acidity in a gradient, when the other choices are neutrality and alkalinity. They choose slight alkalinity in preference to neutrality. The CO/sub 2/ optimum for the different species of fishes experimented upon, varies from very close to neutrality for the blue-gill, to 6 c.c. per liter for the sunfishes and crappies. This is for the November to January condition. At other seasons and in other waters, the optimum probably varies somewhat. The optimum acid concentration for fresh-water fishes in distilled water is about .00005 N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. The distribution of the plankton in the lakes of Wisconsin and New York shows a very interesting correlation with the chemical reaction of the water. There are fewer animals at neutrality than in the slightly alkaline and slightly acid water just above and below the neutral layer. Thus the forms are negative to neutrality. The neutrality of distilled water is a factor to be considered in its toxicity.

Abstract

The equilibria between oxygen and normal and sickle-cell hemoglobins have been redetermined. Sickle-cell hemoglobin has a considerably lower affinity for oxygen than normal. At low concentrations the oxygen pressure at which sickle-cell hemoglobin is half oxygenated is 26–39% higher than in normal hemoglobin. Thus, at a pressure in the tissue capillaries at which normal hemoglobin would have discharged 1 3 of its oxygen, sickle-cell hemoglobin would have lost 2 3 of its oxygen. The pH and temperature dependence of the equilibria have been measured and appear to differ only slightly in the two hemoglobins. The implications of these findings are discussed.

40. THE APPLICATION OF THE REFLECTION SEISMOGRAPH TO NEAR‐SURFACE EXPLORATION

Abstract

The geophysical approach to very shallow exploration problems has been limited, in the main, to electrical, magnetic, electromagnetic, and refraction methods. The reflection seismograph, with its clear advantages of decreased ambiguity and increased resolving power, can be applied to many of these problems. In the fall of 1951, a Stanford Research Institute crew conducted an experimental reflection survey in Minnesota, mapping with correlation spreads the glacial drift‐bedrock interface along seventy miles of line. The interface varied from a few hundred to several hundred feet in depth below surface, and control core holes showed the seismic profile to be essentially correct, where checked. Over‐all velocities, determined by shooting core holes, varied from 3,800 feet per second to 5,500 feet per second. Special instrumentation included a high speed camera and a filter peaked at 100 cps. All shots were fired in the air. The method has obvious applications to mining, engineering, and ground‐water problems, and to difficult weathering problems involving thick alluvial, eolian, or glacial debris.

Thompson, of Carnegie Institution, levels criticism against what he considers its main thesis, the identification of the Itzas with the rulers of the Maya “Old Empire.” Although the full development of this thesis is planned for publication in Parts II and III of his work, the writer desires the privilege of making a brief answer to this criticism in the present journal.

Abstract

The continuous instillation of plasmin (Thrombolysin) directly into the main pulmonary artery of greyhounds, using one half of the systemic doses, was found to be more effective in accelerating or enhancing in vivo lysis of artificially produced pulmonary emboli than systemic intravenous infusion. Animals which received direct pulmonary arterial instillations of Thrombolysin showed remarkably few macroemboli. By light microscopy, these clots showed zones of lysis mainly in the central portions of the clots. We suggest that the flow-guided catheterization of the main pulmonary artery used in this study on greyhounds can be applied to critically ill human subjects, as shown by earlier studies (Magtira, Winkler, Duprey, and Baum, 1966). Continuous infusions of thrombolytic agents directly into the main pulmonary artery might then offer an effective therapy for human pulmonary embolism, especially during that critical period following a massive or submassive embolic episode.

Abstract

SUMMARYThe antibiotic resistance patterns of coliforms in faecal specimens from pigs and their human contacts were studied. The ability of the resistant coliforms to transfer their resistance in vitro to antibiotic-sensitive recipients was examined. The results showed that pigs which had received antibiotics carried more multiply-resistant, R-factor bearing coliforms than pigs which had not been given antibiotics. Human contacts of the antibiotic-treated pigs had a higher incidence of antibiotic-resistant coliforms with R-factors than human contacts of pigs which had not been given antibiotics. It is concluded that antibiotic treatment of farm, animals may lead to acquisition of antibiotic resistance by gut coliforms of man.
