The first concern of the project was to determine completly the Korean mosquito fauna, establish a key to the Korean mosquitos, and to make whole specimens of immature stage or adults for permanent deposit. The other concern of the project was to provide the Department of Entomology U.S. Army Medical Laboratory with some specimens of rare species needed for a new edition of 'Mosquito Fauna of Japan and Korea'. For these purposes, it is necessary to obtain a large and representative number of good specimens. For the first time, the reference collection of mosquitoes in Korea was carried through out the country, under the project of WHO-JEVRU, in 1969. After that, in 1970 and 1971, biological survey for Culex tritaeniorhynchus and taxonomic survey of the Culex vishnni group of mosquito were performed in very limited areas, Shintaein, Cholla Puk-do and Sasang, Pusan city. During these periods, 35 species of 8 genera out of 45 species of 9 genera recorded by former workers were confirmed. In addition to these, 3 unreported species representing 2 genera, namely Aedes kobayashii, Aedes gallosi and Mansomia ochracea, werer found. The annual report covers all information on taxonomic survey of Korean mosquitos conducted throughout South Korea during the past one year from July 1973 to June 1974. The next concern is to provide the U.S. Army Medical Laboratory Pacific with some rare species needed for their enlarged editions of the Mosquito Fauna of Japan and Korea. The larval collections were mainly performed to obtain good specimens perfectly with larval and pupal skins by using individual rearing in the in the laboratory. For adults, human and animal bait resting place and light trap collections were made from time to time for some information on a rare species. The another concern is to provide the department of entomology of the 406th medical laboratory with some specimens of 19 rare species needed, when collected, for their enlarged edition of the Mosquito fauna of Japan and Korea. The larval collections were mainly carried out to obtain good specimens together with larval and pupal skins by using individual rearing in the laboratory. For adults, human biting, animal biting, resting place, dry ice and light trap collections were made to get some information about the rare species missing from larval collection. However, the materials caught by the methods mentioned above were not usually available for permanent mounting. (Author)
