In recent years there has been increased interest in consumer welfare and the degree to which the market place is meeting the needs of the consumer. This study investigated sources of dissatisfaction with textile products and actions taken by the consumer when the product proved unsatisfactory. While consumers were satisfied generally with textile product performance, a sizeable proportion had purchased Unsatisfactory items within the past few years. The majority of complaints arose from poor wear and durability and to a lesser extent from poor appearance and failure of ease-of-care characteristics. Less than one-fourth of the dissatisfied consumers registered complaints with the retailer or manufacturer, suggesting that reliance on actual textile complaints may lead to an understatement of problems in this area.
