4. Social Dialect and Speech Communication Proficiency.

Abstract

In Hawaii today, many persons find it a disadvantage to speak only the social dialect of their home speech communities. For those young adults who enter a University, the problem may be especially acute. The Speech Communication Center of the University of Hawaii is developing a measure of speech-communication proficiency that predicts the reaction of trained judges. Most importantly, it is engaged in a training program designed to enable those young adults who wish to modify social dialects to be able to do so at a reasonable cost. This paper constitutes a progress report: it describes the tutorial program presently used. (DO)

5. Community College Student Personnel Work.

Abstract

In 1967, the Institute for Advanced Study in Student Personnel Work in Junior Colleges and Technical Institutes decided to prepare a collaborative, interim textbook for their own use and that of future participants in the Institute. Working in teams of two or three, the members prepared the following chapters: (1) A philosophy for community college student personnel services; (2) The administration of student personnel services; (3) Characteristics of the community college student and implications for student personnel services; (4) Admissions and records; (5) Orientation to the community junior college; (6) Remedial services in the community college; (7) Counseling and guidance in the junior college; (8) Student activities in the junior college; (9) Student financial aid and placement services; (10) Research and evaluation in the junior college; (11) Student personnel services in the vocational-technical institute; (12) A study of disciplinary philosophy; and (13) Faculty advising. A schema is presented that may provide the starting point for developing an adequate faculty advising program. (HH)

AN ARCHITECT AND A SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS COLLABORATED ON THE DESIGN FOR A HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH STRESSED ECONOMY AND FLEXIBILITY. THEY CONSIDERED THREE ASPECTS OF FLEXIBILITY--(1) EXPANDABILITY, (2) CONVERTIBILITY, AND (3) VERSATILITY. EXPANDABILITY IS DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF SITE SELECTION AND PLANNING. CONVERTIBILITY FEATURES IDENTIFIED INCLUDE MOVABLE SPACE DIVIDERS, EITHER STORAGE UNITS OR TEACHING PANELS, WHICH COULD BE REARRANGED FOR DIFFERENT INSTRUCTION LAYOUTS. VERSATILITY IS INCLUDED IN THE AUDITORIUM DESIGN WHICH INCORPORATES THE BAND ROOM AND ASSEMBLY ROOM, AND USING FOLDING PARTITIONS, PERMITS A NUMBER OF STAGE AND SEATING CONFIGURATIONS. THE AUDITORIUM ALSO FEATURES A CIRCULAR DOMED CONSTRUCTION WHICH HAS ACOUSTIC, ECONOMIC, AND STRUCTURAL ADVANTAGES. SPECIFIC ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO (1) STORAGE LIGHTING, (2) AUDITORIUM SEATING, (3) DOORLESS CLASSROOMS, AND (4) UTILITIES FLEXIBILITY. (DM)
