The five-dimensional differential cross section ∂5σ/pπ2∂pπ∂Ωπ∂Ω1for the reaction pp → ppπ0has been measured with 600 MeV incident protons on hydrogen for coplanar geometry. This cross section depends on the pion momentum, the pion emission angle and the proton scattering angle. The variation of the cross section as a function of the pion angle shows a cos4dependence. An attempt has been made to calculate the cross section using a phenomenological model. The angular dependence is fairly well reproduced. However the absolute value of the cross section is too small by at least a factor three.

A read-out system constructed of lumped delay lines is used for a wire spark-chamber of dimensions 60×100 cm2. The lengths of the delay-line modules are between 30 and 35 cm and the delay is typically 70 ns/mm. The sparks are localised with a precision of 0.9 mm (fwhm) and resolved beyond a separation of 2 cm.

A total of twenty-three human pre-viable foetuses (7–400 g.) were removed by abdominal hysterotomy (legal abortions) and studied during survival in an anoxic state at different temperatures.The duration of survival, as judged by ECG waves, at 37° cwas about 3 hr.; it was longer for female foetuses than for males, and longer for large foetuses than for small ones. General reduction of the body-temperature to 4° cduring periods varying between 30 min. and 6 hr. with subsequent rewarming to and maintenance at 37° cincreased the survival time by a further 1–2 hr.The blood sugar did not decrease either during the period of survival or during hypothermia, but the non-protein nitrogen increased, while acidosis and hyperkalaemia developed.The glycogen content of the liver decreased during the anoxic period of survival and diminished further during hypothermia.The adrenal glands produced adrenaline in addition to noradrenaline during the anoxic phase, and this may occur in a very early stage of intrauterine life.

Saliva from normally menstruating, pregnant and post-menopausal women was collected by catheterizing the excretory duct of the submandibular gland. The saliva was studied for rate of secretion, water content and the crystallization pattern. In addition the spontaneous secretion of saliva as well as the secretion stimulated by histamine and by pilocarpine were studied.The observations can be summarized as follows:Histamine had no effect on the rate of secretion, while pilocarpine increased the secretion considerably.In fertile women, the rate of spontaneous and histamine-stimulated secretion was somewhat higher during the secretion phase of the menstrual cycle than during the proliferation phase. No significant difference was found between the water content of the saliva in the two phases.In pregnant women there was a decrease in the rate of secretion as compared with normally menstruating women. In the post-menopausal women the decrease in secretion of saliva was still more marked.In pregnant women the crystallization pattern of the saliva was coarser than in menstruating women. After the menopause the crystallization pattern was still coarser and in one case no crystallization occurred at all. No constant differences were observed between the patterns during the proliferation and secretion phases, respectively.

Experimental skin wounds made in the backs of rats were studied for their tensile strength.Wounds made at the beginning and middle of pregnancy showed a higher tensile strength than in non-pregnant control animals. Wounds made towards the end of pregnancy showed the same tensile strength as wounds made in the control animals, while those made on the first day of the puerperium again showed a higher tensile strength.There was no suggestion that the healing of skin wounds is impaired during pregnancy.
