Abstract

This study makes available the findings of the research in the teaching of mathematics reported to the U.S. Office of Education during the calendar years 1959 and 1960. To secure the data for this study the U.S. Office of Education, with the aid of the Research Committee of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, sent a questionnaire to 454 colleges that offered graduate work in mathematics education, or whose staffs or students had made previous contributions in that area. Data were received from 247 colleges or research workers. Instead of attempting to classify the research on the basis of the major emphasis of each study, this study is organized according to pertinent questions in mathematics education. These questions and analyses are grouped under three headings: (1) Research in the teaching of elementary school mathematics; (2) Research in the teaching of high school mathematics; and (3) Research in the teaching of college mathematics. The document includes recommendations for future research and identifies unanswered questions in the teaching of mathematics. Appended is a summary of research studies. It is hoped that this summary analysis of research in mathematics education will be helpful to both research workers and classroom teachers in improving mathematics instruction. Abstract

The increased competition in technical advancement has made the need for high quality scientists, engineers, and technicians stand out in bold relief. Better instruction in mathematics in our public schools can make a contribution to the quality of our scientific personnel. If research findings are implemented in the classroom they likewise can make a contribution. The purpose of this study is to help implement research findings by making available the results of research in the teaching of mathematics that have been reported to the Office of Education during the calendar years 1957 and 1958. It is hoped that the present study will be helpful both to researchers and classroom teachers in their efforts to improve the teaching of mathematics. Appendix includes: Summary of Research Studies. 19. A COMPARISON OF MASS MEDIA USAGE BY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS OF EXTREME EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AND MENTAL ABILITY.

THE MOTION PICTURE, RADIO, AND TELEVISION ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WERE ASCERTAINED TO DETERMINE POSSIBILITIES FOR BETTER EDUCATIONAL UTILIZATION OF THESE MEDIA. THIS PROJECT WAS CONDUCTED AS A SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITY TO COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROJECT 367, "A STUDY OF INTERESTS OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH" (ED 002 846). PROJECT SUBJECTS WERE APPROXIMATELY 360 STUDENTS IN THE SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADES. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN UPPER AND LOWER EDUCATIONAL GROUPS AND BETWEEN UPPER AND LOWER MENTAL ABILITY GROUPS WERE STUDIED TO ANSWER FOUR QUESTIONS--(1) DOES THE TIME WHICH EXTREME ABILITY GROUPS DEVOTE TO MASS MEDIA VARY, (2) IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN THE APPEAL THAT MASS MEDIA HOLDS FOR EXTREME GROUPS, (3) IS THE USE OF MASS MEDIA ASSOCIATED IN THE SAME MANNER WITH THE ACADEMIC ENDEAVORS OF THE EXTREME GROUPS, AND (4) DO THESE GROUPS VARY IN THE RECEIPT OF ADULT GUIDANCE RELATED TO THE USE OF THE THREE MEDIA. SEX DIFFERENCES WERE NOTED ON EACH OF THESE QUESTIONS. UPPER AND LOWER GROUPS OF EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AND UPPER AND LOWER GROUPS OF MENTAL ABILITY WERE FOUND TO BE QUITE SIMILAR WITH RESPECT TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS. IMPLICATIONS ARE PROVIDED IN THE REPORT FOR BETTER EDUCATIONAL UTILIZATION OF MASS MEDIA BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. SUGGESTIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS, PARENTS, AND ORGANIZED ADULT GROUPS. (JH)
