The exotic barb Puntius gonionotus was introduced into Bangladesh in 1987. Its faster growth rate, nice taste and compatibility with our culturable species have made it very popular food fish in Bangladesh. With a view to providing some basic information towards development of sustainable seed production of the species, a study was undertaken to determine the fecundity and ovary characteristics of the fish. The mean fecundity of 55 gravid females (of 11 length group) of Puntius gonionotus was obtained as 14321 with a range of 2254.67 to 6964.73 from fishes having a mean total length and mean body weight of 200.13±20.58 mm and 196±34.379 g respectively. The relationship between the fecundity (F) and total length (TL), total body weight (TW), ovary length (OL) and ovary weight (OW) were established. Regression analysis was made and the co-efficient of correlation (r) was calculated for each of the following F-TL, F-TW, F-OL and F-OW and the values of r were obtained to be 0.84, 0.84, 0.95 and 0.96 respectively. The influence of four levels of fertilizers viz. 0:0:0, 60:65:80, 120:130:160 and 240:260:320 kg/ha (N:P:K) on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of six onion genotypes viz. Thaherpuri Brown, BARI Onion 1, Faridpuri Bhati, Suksagar, Nasirbala and Pusa Red exhibited distinct variation in respect of all the characters under investigation in the field condition. The fertilizers at 120:130:160 kg/ha produced the maximum bulb yield (14.9 t/ha). Genotype Pusa Red gave the maximum bulb yield (17.2 t/ha) and Faridpuri Bhati had the lowest yield (11.8 t/ha). Pusa Red along with 120:130:160 kg/ha produced maximum bulb yield (18.3 t/ha). Correlation studies revealed that bulb yield was positively related with different yield components, but it showed non-significant negative relation with bulb dry matter content (%). The regression analyses showed that the rate of change of bulb yield was dependent upon the rate of change of plant height, number of leaves and roots, and root length. Increase in number of roots per plant appears very important in increasing the yield. A field trial was conducted during the winter season of 2001-2002 to find out the effect of planting method and nitrogen levels on wheat. Effects of two planting methods viz. bed planting and conventional planting were studied on three nitrogen levels viz. 50, 100 & 150 kg /ha on wheat (var. Protiva). Planting methods exhibited significant variation in respect of all the characters studied. The maximum grain yield (3.60 t/ha) was obtained from bed planting. Different levels of nitrogen significantly influenced on yield and yield attributing parameters of wheat. The highest grain yield (3.70 t/ha) was recorded from 150 kg N per hectare. The interaction effects of planting methods and nitrogen levels showed the significant difference in respect of spike/m2, spike length and grain yield. Highest grain yield (4.04 t/ha) was obtained at bed planting using 150 kg N per hectare. Though higher rate of N are used but lodging of plant height was not noticed. The correlation analyses showed that the rate of change of grain yield was highly dependent upon the rate of change of yield contributing characters of wheat. An experiment was conducted to study the induced spawning of Rajputi Puntius gonionotus (Bleeker) in the months of April, May, June and July 2005. Five different doses of PG were used in the experiment. In Puntius gonionotus all the different doses (doses D1-3.00 mg/kg, D2-6.00 mg/kg, D3-9.00 mg/kg, D4- 12.00 mg/kg and D5-15.00 mg/kg) were affected equally (100%) in egg release. In the experiment both the males and females were given the 1st dose but the 2nd injection was given only to the females after 6 hours. The highest fertilization rates were 70.10±2.25% in April (dose D4), 75.00±2.10% in May (dose D3), 80.00±2.14% in June and 79.20±2.65% in July (dose D3). The highest hatching and survivability rates were 61.50±3.10 and 55.00±2.13 in April (dose D4), 68.00±3.5 and 63.00±2.20 in May (dose D3), 71.80±2.00 and 68.50±2.60 in June (dose D2), and 70.25±3.50 and 65.70±2.16 in July (dose D3) respectively. The month of June and the dose D2 (2mg in first injection and 4 mg in second injection) were found to be most effective for induced spawning of P. gonionotus. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the protective effect of turmeric powder on arsenic toxicity through mice model. Swiss albino male mice were divided into four groups. The first group was used as control, while groups 2, 3, and 4 were treated with turmeric powder (T, 50mg/kg body weight/day), sodium arsenite (Sa, 10mg/kg body weight/day) and turmeric plus Sa (T+Sa), respectively. Results showed that oral administration of Sa reduced the weight gain of the mice compared to the control group and food supplementation of turmeric prevented the reduction of weight gain. Turmeric abrogated the Sa-induced elevation of serum urea, glucose, triglyceride (TG) level and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity except the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Turmeric also prevented the Sa-induced perturbation of serum butyryl cholinesterase activity (BChE). Therefore, ameliorating effect of turmeric on Sa-treated mice suggested the future application of turmeric to reduce or to prevent arsenic toxicity in human. Patients with neck pain both acute and chronic of various aetiologies are commonly found throughout the world for years. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an excellent imaging modality for demonstration of aetiology of neck pain. Degenerative changes, infective processes, neoplastic processes, mechanical injuries and congenital disorders of the spine can be detected by MRI without any hazards. This prospective study of neck pain was done in Radiology and Imaging department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka on 60 cases of both sexes reported during the period, February 2006 to September 2006. The aim of the study was to find out the role of MRI in diagnosis and evaluation of chronic and acute neck pain. Out of 60 cases, 51 cases were with cervical spondylotic changes, 2 cases were with spinal trauma, 2 cases were space occupying lesion (SOL) in spinal cord, 1 case was SOL in vertebra, 1 case was soft tissue mass in neck. Only 2 cases showed normal MRI findings. The youngest patient was a fourteen year old male and oldest one was 75 years old male person. Highest incidence was in the 5th decade numbering 20 (33.3%). MRI is non-invasive, non hazardous method and have very few contraindications. Though MRI is relatively expensive and still then it is good considering the diagnostic accuracy and cost effectiveness.
